I think this is the correct week, purely approximation :D Anyway, I for one can't wait, this has to be one of the best challengers ever!
Loving the Surbiton Grass courts, although will be missing quallies because of Roland Garros. Who is joining me?

I was going to as you know, but exams really mess up with my plans! i have just had to try and exchange a queens ticket for another day because there is an exam on that day :(
will you be going if jim doesnt play?

I have spoken to Casey Dellacqua and Nicole Sewell and they reckon the courts and venue there is great and that most of players love it and will be coming back again this year!

Hopefully another good draw, hope to see philippoussis here getting a few matches under his belt!

mate can u provide us with reports for mens and ladies matches?
photos?

Yeah no probs-used 5 films on 1st day of quallies last year! I will only be at main draw this year though because of RG, but I am in the press office so its all good :yeah:

Ok mr eastabrook i am now considering going to surbiton! i have monday and thursday free! plus the weekend of qualies! (although i need to revise, but i suppose i could revise on the train considering it will be 2 hours to london! so 3-4 hours a day should be ok lol, i doubt i can manage any more).

Now the only trouble is i need two trains which means i can only get there at gone 11 maybe and play starts at 11 :(! and it says its 1.5 miles away, so if i walk its gonna take 20-30 minutes? do you know how much the buses are the main station? and how often they come?

I know surbiton has a centre court and doesnt sell grounds passes! but if i decided to go onto the outside courts say arriving at 11.30 (would there be much chance of getting a seat?). I cant get any earlier trains unless i pay like 40£ for the train lol, so i would have to settle for arriving abit late and missing some play

Saturday, sunday and monday are free! im not sure about thursday though

ae wowww
04-28-2005, 08:02 PM
Yeah man you have a very good chance of getting a seat-the courts are rarely EVER full, I don't know if I've ever seen a full court at Surbiton. With regards to buses, they don't take you to the venue, but I walk there in about 5-10 mins from the station, but I take my bike on the train so takes about 1/2 mins from station to venue. It's a relatively small station, but easy to find from.

thanks ae woww!! you beauty  :D

Also it seems as if there are two courts at surbiton next to each other, which seems kind of wierd

ae wowww
05-06-2005, 06:59 PM
Yeah its a little odd, but I've only like once see balls go across-never disrupting play. It is to do with space, but works nicely..

joeb_uk
05-06-2005, 07:02 PM
is it possible to see both courts at the same time? do you choose which one you are behind?

ae wowww
05-06-2005, 07:46 PM
Yeah it's easy possible to see both... When I took photos once with a disposable, you could see a bit of both. You can move around a lot in the stands, because they are rarely full-even when Greggy is playing! If you sit somewhere in the middle it's quite good. There is the compulsory netting in the way, so go quite high up. Last year I just grabbed a press pass from my mate and sat courtside for Jim's match :D That was sweet...

The Surbiton just has a order form inside it.. And the number from the website

I think I said 7 or 8 outside courts, and we exchanged photos (just saying this for others benefits :))

The net doesn't make photographing too bad if you sit high and have a good lens..

Surbiton Racket and Fitness Club

12 grass courts (May to Sept),
8 hard courts (3 with floodlights).

Thanks for confirmation m-j-d... I think that may be right what I said then if we take 12; take away the centre court to get 10; then take away the two grass practice courts, we get 8 grass outside courts.
I explain to Joe about the hard courts, too.

Former Wimbledon finalist Mark Philippoussis faces an anxious wait to find out whether he can play in The Surbiton Trophy after the official entry list revealed one of its strongest ever draws.

Philippoussis, who lost to Roger Federer in the 2003 Wimbledon final, was not ranked high enough to gain entry into the main draw of the Men's €50,000 Challenger at Surbiton, and will have to hope that players ranked above him drop out.

Ivo Karlovic – the 6'10" Croatian who knocked defending Wimbledon
champion Lleyton Hewitt out at the All England Club in 2003, three- time Wimbledon doubles champion Jonas Bjorkman, and former World No.11 Sjeng Schalken will form part of the draw.

The Surbiton Trophy traditionally marks the beginning of the UK grass court season, preparing some of the best grass court tennis players in the world for battle at Wimbledon.

George Bastl – the last man to play, and beat, Pete Sampras at SW19
in 2002, is another who will take part in the event, as will the exciting young Cypriot Marcos Bagdahtis.

Bagdahtis, 19, was a World No.1 junior player, and proved that he had the potential to transform his junior results into senior success when he took a set off World No.1 Federer at the US Open last year. With his long pony-tail, colourful clothes and vibrant personality, Bagdahtis will doubtless prove a big hit in Surbiton.

The `tallest match' in tennis history might well take place this year in Surbiton. That will happen if the 6'10" Karlovic meets the 6'8" Dick Norman. Norman made his name in 1995, beating Stefan Edberg at Wimbledon.

Karlovic has fond memories of British grass court Challenger tournaments. He was competing in a similar event when his compatriot Goran Ivanisevic triumphed at Wimbledon in 2001. "The year he won at Wimbledon I was also in England playing a Challenger in Bristol," said Karlovic. "All the players there were wishing that Goran finally wins Wimbledon and were cheering for him."

As well as Philippoussis, the popular American James Blake is ranked just outside the cut-off for direct entry, as is Britian's Alex Bogdanovic.

The 2000 Wimbledon quarterfinalist Jan-Michael Gambill and big-
serving South African Wesley Moodie – the Surbiton champion in 2003
and a finalist last year – are all ranked higher than Blake and Bogdanovic, and gain automatic entry into the singles main draw.

Moodie defeated Bogdanovic in the 2003 final, but went down to Karol Beck of the Slovak Republic in last year's final.

The list is around... I deleted it from the article though. If I find it, I'll post it ;)

All I remember is, it was a british site. And I found it hilarious that they were more focused on Philippoussis than Bogdanovic. I put the article in my Swedish Tennis group, but didn't add any iof the details. The answer is here :D

Thank you for your message, enquiring about Qualifying dates at Surbiton, which was sent to the LTA Webmaster and then forwarded to me for response.

As Surbiton is a mixed event, the event is 'staggered' with the Women's event starting a day earlier than the Men's event.

Women's Qualifying is scheduled for Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May, with Main Draw beginning on Monday 30 May.

The Men's Qualifying is scheduled for Sunday 29 and Monday 30 May, with Main Draw beginning on Tuesday 31 May.

Therefore, Monday 30 May will be a combination of Qualifying and Main Draw matches.

All the above is weather permitting, of course!

I hope this information helps and please do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further details regarding The Surbiton Trophy.

No problem!

Play is scheduled to start at 10am on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 May, with play starting at 11am from Monday 30 May - Sunday 5 June inclusive.

It is worth checking the LTA website on a daily basis, as these times could change - subject to weather etc.

I guess it has been quite a while since I posted in this forum... Been at the SteveG forum (from where most of the list info here comes :)) ..

Good to see that MTF is now very active in the challenger section that nobody cared for a while back. I am a bit surprised.

Anyway, I believe the reason why Surbiton men's challenger has a tuesday start (as does Prostejov/Furth/Sassuolo/YubaCity challengers next week) is to allow players who have lost by the 3rd round of French Open which finishes by saturday evening to be in the list for next week.

All players who is still alive in any of the draws (singles, doubles or mixed) by saturday evening at Roland Garros will be taken out from the main draw lists of next week's men's challenger by saturday evening. So, players like Bjorkman are almost surely not be in the list by saturday evening.

All players who is still alive in any of the draws (singles, doubles or mixed) by saturday evening at Roland Garros will be taken out from the main draw lists of next week's men's challenger by saturday evening. So, players like Bjorkman are almost surely not be in the list by saturday evening.

Hi Jay :wavey:

I expected those were the reasons for the Tuesday starts. That's why I was trying not to ask before but I was trying to figure something out this morning. Thankfully, I saw your update before I asked :).

Surbiton Trophy Wild Cards Announced

The LTA today confirms that British number two Greg Rusedski will play at this year’s Surbiton Trophy after receiving one of eight available wildcards.

The tournament, which begins tomorrow with qualifying, Saturday 28th, is the traditional curtain raiser to the grass court season.

Greg will use both Surbiton along side Queens as preparation for this year’s Championships, Wimbledon.

Last year he reached the quarterfinal stage at Surbiton losing to Canadian Frank Dancevic.

Wild cards have also been awarded to three other British men including 2003 runner-up Alex Bogdanovic, Mark Hilton and Jonathan Marray as well as four British women, Anne Keothavong, Amanda Janes, Jane O’Donoghue and Emily Webley-Smith

Rusedski, Hilton, Marray have WCs. They had one extra WC to give as Bogdanovic made it in direct. I assume Delgado got that WC?

Poor decision by him, if I may say so. Grass is probably his best surface and clay his worst... plus with Roland Garros over, the clay season is done. He should be getting ready for Wimbledon, if he wants to end his 10? match losing streak.

It seems a little bit dangerous to bet against Delic, a huge server. But definetely he has little experience on grass. Nevertheless, i'm afraid he's able to become a shadow of Ancic on surface...

Anyway, GL with your bet.

Frequent showers meant that only half an hour’s play was possible at The Surbiton Trophy today (Wednesday) long enough for Elena Baltacha to gain the advantage of a break of serve as she moved into a 3-2 first set lead over Vilmarie Castellvi of Puerto Rico and for Alan Mackin to drop the opening set 2-6 against Antony Dupuis of France.

Play was officially abandoned for the day at 5.50pm.

Tomorrow’s schedule starts at 10.30am with Greg Rusedski making his long awaited appearance in the tournament after the British number two was forced to sit around all day today kicking his heels in frustration.

Yes  i arrived in time :D was quite a disapointing match really. Baghdatis broke twice to go 3-0 up first set, got broken back. Lots of errors from both players :(
Mankad wasnt ripping shots like he did against mergea, but he didnt have as much time to. Marcos got lots of free points on his serve whilst mankad didnt (which shaped the match greatly, also marcos was a little more consistent and attacking).

The delic match was awful for him, he got aced about 7 times in two consecutive love games.

i saw him playing in miami. he played terrible. he just goes for winners from everywhere a la sprem (the difference being that while k-lina actually gets the ball in ever fifth or sixth attempt, he always misses).

Bracciali is actually a better player on fast surfaces than on clay.

I don't doubt that mate - he qualified for Wimby last year and I watched a bit of his first round match. I can see how he is equipped for grass, particularly with his big serve but I still can't get my head around the fact that Greg lost to him.

Greg is still really dangerous on grass and has won several titles on it...he finished last year so well. He seemed to be playing okay on hardcourts this year, had 2 weeks to practice for this match...everything was right for him. He apparently led by a break in the 2nd set...the Greg of last year and years before didn't let a lead like that slip. It is still a little disturbing for me...he stands to lose his top 100 ranking bit by bit after Wimby. :scared:

I'm guessing that you don't think Sprem can get close to matching her Wimby performance of 2004 then? :p

Guess the player....JMG?

If so, yeah I'm kind of concerned for him too. I used to like watching his game...now I can't as he doesn't seem to be high enough ranked to get into the tournies anymore. :sobbing: Any particular reason for his downfall? Poor form / injuries / personal problems? Having said that, he has been declining for several years now...maybe it is that his game is too one-dimensional. I fear Paradorn may go a similar route. :scared:

JMG was cursed two years ago by a website, apparently. I am sure his ranking will go back up soon, when it closes. (I don't have any other explanation, could be absolute lack of confidence brought on by injuries and some unexpectedly poor results, but that's just speculation on my part).

Sorry jez i watched the end of the match and it was rusedski who was exposed for his lack of weapons apart from his serve not bracciali. Once bracciali got the return in play, greg was passed with ease when he came to the net.
Bracciali is actually quite a good player, he has a variation in his backhand and is able to hit winners from the backhand quite frequently (unlike gregs backhand). He is also quite comfortable finishing points at the net.

Travis Rettenmaier, has been a legend this week! Lucky loser in quallies makes semis :D

He came on Court A with his hood up :D Been calling him 8 mile all week, shame he lost.. Credit to him on one of the best weeks of his career though.

Jim and Jordan in the final :D 61 63 over Kim/Lee!

Ivo had match points on the breaker. Additionally, he was 40-30 on Braccialli's serve at 4-3 in the third!
You could see the nerves lost him the match points.. I felt bad for him-but you could see how delighted Braccialli was. Jim and Jordan won the doubles 62 64 :D
