Tournament Talk

I don't think we need to start a thread for each tournament JMG plays, so perhaps we can just talk about his tournament results here. Hopefully, they will actually be worth talking about for the rest of the year. His next event is the Tunica Challenger beginning on May 2nd. :D

Is anyone going to Tunica?

ae wowww
04-25-2005, 03:13 PM
Good idea, Fee. I think the fact that JMG is playing Tunica is basically confirmation that he won't be in Paris  I will miss him, but hopefully see him at Surbiton. I guess he'll stay in the States the week after Tunica and play Forest Hills, NY as well.

Fee
04-25-2005, 03:52 PM
I don't follow your logic Drew. He plays Tunica on May 2nd, Forest Hills on the 9th (both of those have Saturday finals), so he could still play RG qualies on the 16th if he wants to (James Blake is scheduled to do just that). He's back home in Spokane now, so I hope to catch him and get an update soon.

ae wowww
04-26-2005, 06:51 AM
:) My logic was not timing, it was that he's staying in the States, his home country, playing on green clay challengers-then he's got to play on European clay, in European conditions. I would've thought he'd get here as early as possible, play singles and doubles just to adapt. I'm still  though because he will have to win 3 matches on clay for me to see him in RG...

binkygirl
04-26-2005, 10:34 AM
I think he's better off staying over here and playing Challengers to get his ranking back up.. I think a good goal would be direct entrance into the US Open.

Fee
04-26-2005, 03:56 PM
I see what you mean now Drew. I suppose he could have played some of the European Challengers, but if he doubts his ability on clay then it's just as well to stay closer to home and work on the clay here. Green clay is a faster surface, but you still have to slide when you play on it, so he will get some practice with the footwork. Personally, a part of me hopes he skips RG and prepares for grass instead. He has points to defend in England, and he may have to qualify for Wimbledon (eek).

Jan-Mike decided not to play the Queen's qualies, so his next tournament is the Liverpool International June 8 - 12. He is guaranteed 3 matches there and I think he's also scheduled to play a mixed doubles exhibition with Martina Navratilova. The website is www.liverpooltennis.co.uk. After that he has the W. qualies beginning on Monday, June 13th. The draw will be made on Sunday evening.

Well, its news with caution. Here is his tentative schedule for the next few weeks:

June 13th - Wimbledon qualies
June 20th - Wimbledon (fingers crossed)
June 27th - Wimbledon or Forest Hills Challenger
July 4th - Newport (Hall of Fame)
July 11th - Aptos Challenger
July 18th - Indy
July 25th - Los Angeles (tentative)
Aug 1st - Washington DC
Aug 8th - Binghamton Challenger (tentative)
Aug 15th - Cincy Masters (maybe) or Bronx Challenger
Aug 22nd - New Haven or USO qualies (icky thought)
Aug 29th - USO

So, it all depends on how he feels and where he feels he can get the most points. He is still dealing with the leg soreness, so if he might pull from a tournament if he starts to feel its too much for him. Unfortunately, JMG seems to play better when he plays more often, but when he plays more often his legs get sore again. Vicious circle.

STOPPINI, Andrea ITA v. PEYA, Alexander AUT
PEQUERY, Jean-Michel FRA v. WAUTERS, Stefan BEL
NAVARRO-PASTOR, Ivan ESP v. (27) OKUN, Noam ISR

Jan-Mike has been dealing with chronic shin splints for about two years now, and the pain must have been really bad for him to retire because that's the first time that he has done that in ages. He might be okay after 3 days of rest, we'll see.

Gimelstob injured his back a few weeks ago, had it treated on court during his match on Tuesday, so its possible it flared up during his match today (especially if he served first and it went ping!)

I'm watching the Jan-Mike match. First set he served extremely well and was never troubled on his serve. Didn't return as well as he can and it went to a tie break, neither player having a break point all set. Jan-Mike went 4-1 up and was looking great. Then all of a sudden he seemed to change his gameplan, I have no idea why. He was hitting a lot to Massu's weak backhand, Massu was running around it a lot and then Jan-Mike would hit into the space he would leave. All of a sudden he began to let Massu dominate the match with his forehand. Massu took 6 straight points to win the tie break, and is now a break up in the 2nd :(

Another thing, its the first time I've seen Jan-Mike play in quite a long time. I've noticed about 90% of the errors he's making are pretty lame efforts into the net. He's hardly hit anything wide or long, just into the net seemingly every time.

I'll be in NYC since oct. 31 until nov. 4. Then i'll head to Philly for the WTA Advanta Championships. I'm going to find out the best way to travel to Boston from NYC. It seems i'd have to take a cab from Bsoton to the tournament

Boston to NYC the best way would be a train. They run them like every hour and are pretty cheap I believe. Take it from South Station in Boston :) I'm from the Boston area so I'd be glad to help you find out info about transportation and all that for the tourney in Boston, just PM me or something :) if you can take the T (subway), that'd definitely be the easiest. And if it's all in the city and that's where you'd be staying, chances are good that that is possible.

fonso, look at buses, it may be better. I am SHOCKED that Boston to NYC is over $100... it's about 4 hours in a car. I mean, people make the Boston-NYC trip ALL The time, I just can't imagine there's no reasonable way to get there!!!

Sudbury is west of boston a bit. I think it's a nice city, an upper-class suburb, but honestly I can't say I have ever been there. I think it's about an hour outside of the city, give or take a little. And that would make transportation a huge pain in the ass.

Well, I think that match against Saretta is a good sign for him. Saretta can be tough when he's on and for JMG to get a set from him was a good thing. I wonder about that doubles match though, as the loss allowed Goran to get into qualies for Carson on Saturday (just an hour's drive from the Calabasas site).

I'm hoping JMG gets a decent draw for Carson. He seems to play better when he has played more, so he could do some damage there.

Jan-Mike could not get a first serve in during a good portion of that singles match, but he did play very aggressive tennis and I was glad to see it. He's moving well too, and I think his leg pain may be gone once and for all.

He and Goran Dragicevic won the doubles title today, beating Cody Conley and Ryan Newport 6-4, 6-3. It was a pretty quick match, mainly because JMG was serving some SERIOUS BOMBS and those guys rarely got a racquet on them. Goran also had some very strong service games, and he has this wicked backhand volley that he can flick cross court in the blink of an eye. Very pleased for the two of them, and they are playing together in the Boston Challenger this week. Hopefully they will continue to do well there.

That German qualifier has won an NCAA title and has been playing pretty well lately. He is riding a lot of confidence. Jan-Mike, on the other hand, is not. I suspect that the 3 setter on Tuesday may have taken a little bit out of him, but he hung tough and got both sets to TB's, so he must have doing some things right in this match.

He hasn't put two together since he qualifed for Tokyo a few weeks back. I believe he will work through this.
