Vamos, Gaston!

Speaking of bacalao I had some at a Portuguese resto... pasteis do bacalhao... not bad [altho so far not overly impressed w Portuguese cuisine... doesn't hold a candle to Spanish imo]. ;)

WE WON, THIRD SET 6-0!!!
If you're a pessimist you have to think he showed a lot of weakness, but if you're an optimist you can think of how he managed to overcome almost a match-point to win the third set 6-0. :D I'm inclined to adopt this attitude: he didn't give up when he was playing badly and kept on fighting!
I hope this will make him stronger for the next match! :cat:

Wow! Gaston loves to have us worried, doesn't he? I was folowing the livescores and the 1st set, I told myself taht both players were testing each other. When Gaston lost the tie-break, I thought that he had to lift his head up high and keep on fighting. That's what he did, but not as I was expecting it to happen. Until the end of the 2nd set, I was biting my nails so hard!!! And then came the delivrance, he hasn't let any other game to his opponent... :worship: :worship: :worship:

I'd compare Gaston with a car that needs some warm-up to get efficient... ;)

I want to share with you my friend Victor´s analysis:

BACK FROM THE JAWS OF DEATH

I´m glad that GG has won. On the one hand, the way that he won makes me very happy, but on the other hand it also worries me.

I´m thrilled that he managed to turn around a match that was in trouble, in really deep trouble.

But I can´t help being worried that he should have to feel at death´s door before saving the situation. There´s a lot of merit in lifting a match-point, but it´s very risky. The real problem is that he´s constantly exposing himself to these situations. Fundamentally, he reaches these situations because he throws away a heap of break points in each set. He keeps getting into difficulties with games where he´s leading 40-0 and ends up fighting in a deuce.

If my memory doesn´t deceive me, this is the first toughly-fought match this year that he´s won, or one of the few. Perhaps he was needing the sensation of winning a match in this way. There´ve been too many matches that he´s lost by a hair. Hrbaty in Australia, the first set against Agassi in the Nasdaq, Ferrero the other day, etc...

Last year, after quite a bad season on clay, he needed to win a ferocious 5-set battle against Cañas in the first round of Roland Garros to end up winning the tournament. I hope this match has been the "alarm clock" he needed.

Action Jackson
04-26-2005, 07:26 AM
Hahaha, that was a close match.

Why do things the easy way? The best thing is that he found a way to win when he wasn't playing as well as he can.

Hey everyone!

I was so tired yesterday..that I counld't even come here. All I wanted was my sweet bed!!
Gaston's match was terrible - my poor heart..I mean there was a moment there when I really thought he was gone.
But he fought..and won..and I believe that's what matters at the end of the day.

Btw, I took the most winderfull picture of him with my younger Brother...The kid was so nervous - standing by the side of the RG winner!! And Gaston was so sweet ,there's no word to describe this guy..he is amazing really!

Take care everyone!

Don't tempt me Claudia! The crowd loves him, that's good. And maybe it has sthg to do with his RG title. But not only...He has a seducing style when he plays. You get emotional when you watch him play. How do you think he received that gift from the crowd in RG, when he was 2 sets down in the final? They made the wave because they wanted that match to continue, but not only for that. Compared to Coria's style, they had chosen their fave...And now that he has won that title, the way he did, for sure that crowds everywhere welcome him with their arms wide open. He's just a special guy... :p

What's funny is that guy, in the score thread, asking you if you think Gaston can do it against Feli, because he dislikes big servers...Since when having a big serve is enough to win on clay? If it was, a certain Andy would be highly interested...

No, I am not worried about burnout at all unlike the odd person on GM.

Choupi
04-28-2005, 04:57 PM
There will be no burnout! When you know Gaston and when you have an idea of how he considers his training before RG, you have to understand that there can't be any burnout...but only those who accept to see a little further than their nose can understand such a thing.

Action Jackson

He has his preparation, though I hope in the off-season he can have a better preparation physically.

The only thing that anyone can ask is that he does his best and actually this year the match so far I have been the most proud of was the one with Hrbaty in Australia.

I agree about that match, and I would add the Viña final (which unfortunately most of you couldn't see) where they fought to the death but Gastón was determined he would win and he did so. He was also determined to control his temper in spite of the awful Chilean public, and I think that permitted him to stay more focussed.

personally I am surprised there's a relatively high level of awareness for this match, coz as we know Feli doesn't have anything else but looks and you got this guy who only won RG and has maybe the best clay record over the past year. You do know Gaston would have to be in a Gaston mood to lose this match, if we are being objective and I dont see that one coming, its not like he's playin Nadal.

oh yes, the Hrbaty match surely was the most impessive performance from Gaston this year!..was 3 am when he led 2 tiebreaks to 1, was an exciting mornin for sure, and the loss wasnt as important as the fact he made it so close to beating Hrbaty when noone thought he had a chance!

Hi everyone! :wavey:

Another match ,another victory :worship: ...there's not much to say about today , really. Gaston played well ,but he didn't have to make a big effort actually..Feli was never really there..nothin was coming out well for him. He had two or three good shots..and was pretty much it.

Gaston totally lead the game since it started..with so much confidence..that was quite impressive. He was completly calm ,relaxed. But off course the damn foot faults were there.. I even laughed at the first one ,cause I was especting it..Gaston is not Gaston without his foot faults!!

About tomorow..I have to say that I'm a bit concerned.
I saw Guillermo Garcia Lopez playing this week...ok ok it was Pim Pim who I saw him beating , and we all know Joachim's game on clay - still he played very well..he's very good on clay.

So fingers crossed..very tight!!

Take care you all!! :wavey:

I won't be getting the semifinals live either, Choupi, but a few hours later. It's alright, I'd probably be asleep by the time he's playing live, hehe :p!

I had a trip planned for tomorrow, to go see the Davis Cup tie between Venezuela and Canada [Americas Group 1 semifinal], but I couldn't get tickets... I'm very mad, but at least I'll be able to see Gastón play so it's not all bad! ;)

04-30-2005, 08:11 PM
  GASTON! GASTON!

I haven´t been in touch before because I´m just recovering after this match! When Gastón started playing badly serving for the first set, I got so nervous that I left my husband to suffer and went off to bed with a splitting headache. He called me back when we were halfway through the third! Of course I eavesdropped in the meantime, ;) and he then gave me the low-down on the match and I´ve been reading all the first reactions in papers.

Conclusions? Perhaps this is a more important triumph than when he´s playing his best tennis. From what I could see, he wasn´t satisfied with his game and wasn´t risking deep shots. This let GGL play his powerful game, which together with the lack of winners on Gastón´s part, permitted him to put up a great fight. Gastón threw down his racquet, cursed his mother, etc., and I think he gave up the second set for lost.

BUT that´s where his new-found self-awareness took over. He played as if he´s convinced he´s a Top Five and displayed all his will-power and concentration to come back into the match and show his rival who´s the boss! :worship: With great backhand shots and drops there was nothing GGL could do in the end. That´s why I think winning a match in this way tells us a lot about Gastón´s stamina at the moment.
Tomorrow will be difficult, but all finals are. Robredo played over an hour in doubles with Chela, so they both will be a little tired, but apparently the final is to the best of three.

VAMOS GASTON!!! :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat: :cat:

http://www.estorilopen.net/

Gaudio: "Today it was tough because he played really good. I won the
first set because I think I was a little bit lucky. In the second
set, I couldn't do anything, everything was for him, he was going
for every shot and it was really tough. In the third, I was 1-1
serving 15-40 and I don't know how I came back, but I did it."

On being in his third final in 2005: "I hope tomorrow I can win
another title, especially being so close to Roland Garros. It would
be great for the confidence. Against Tommy [Robredo], we have always
played very tough matches. The last time he defeated me was in the
final of Barcelona 2004, in five sets. He was playing really good at
that time and then he got injured. I know that now he really wants
to come back so I expect a difficult meeting tomorrow.

"Since the last time we've played things have changed and many good
things have happened [referring to Roland Garros] and I think this
could definitely help me tomorrow."

Oh and another thing..totally off topic - and very personal .. but..anyway.

Marcela is here, with him. She barely speaks..I think she is a bit shy.
But she seems nice , Gaston his happy one can tell that..so that's why I mentioned . I believe its good for him ,for his game too, have a good relationship with a nice girl. A supportive girl , and she seems to be.

4-1 he has the double break

No time to celebrate, he has to focus and not think about the beach.

5-1

Gaston is doing the right thing, as he long as he can keep relaxed and moving well and he's hitting very good length, then Crampredo shouldn't beat him.

Gaston got his revenge against Robredo.

Sure it was a bit of a Mickey Mouse title, but after that crap in Barcelona last year it's a special win.

Wow...I love the new title of that thread! :p And oh boy, what a match!!! :worship: The score doesn't really say so but it's been tighter than it seems. The only "easy" part has been the 1st set. I'm glad to have been able to watch it and record it!!!! :D

He's won a title now, but there are much bigger tests ahead than Robredo.

Choupi

Yes there are. But let us enjoy that special taste of the victory...Unlike yesterday, and though the score doesn't say so, he hasn't thrown away the 2nd set. He's kept on fighting, till the end. He hasn't lost focus. OK. He's broken a racket and cursed a bit, but it didn't last...He's shown he could remain focused even when outplayed by Robredo in the 2nd set.

:woohoo: congrats Gaston!
again he had his moments and lack of concentration but managed to do the job in the end, and finally he's the champ!! :worship:

even more confidence for the upcoming tourneys, and hopefully he'll do as well in Rome! :)

I am enjoying the victory more than most because of his opponent who I can't stand, but he got the W and that's what I like most about it.

It wasn't the most challenging tournament, but as long as he can remain focused when he plays the big boys, then there are good things that lie ahead.

CONGRATULATIONS GASTON!!!!!

You made us suffer, but it´s the third final you win this year!
As one of the Argentine papers said, each time he´s reached the semis, he ended up winning. Now he´ll have to work on those second sets...

And winning that 3rd title of the year 2005 places him 3rd behind Federer and Nadal on the list of those who have won the more titles for 2005! :D

Pleasure to see you Em as always, but the only thing wrong with the scoreline was that the last set wasn't 6-0.

Indeed!

This victory is extra sweet for me who witnessed last year's Barcelna final, seated about 2 meters behind Robredo who was getting medical treatment calmly.
