U.S. Open warmup event scrapped

April 21, 2005
NEW YORK (AP) -- A tuneup event for the U.S. Open was canceled after organizers were unable to move it to a larger site.

The decision ends a 23-year run for the Long Island tennis tournament once known as the Hamlet Cup. The TD Waterhouse Cup had been scheduled for Aug. 20-28.

Lleyton Hewitt won last year's event in Commack. Negotiations to shift the event to East Meadow could not be completed in time, according to a letter posted Wednesday on the tournament's Web site.

The field was to have been expanded from 32 to 56 players.

``We're confident there will be another tournament that week,'' ATP spokesman Greg Sharko said Thursday. ``We're taking applications now.''

No problem for Hewitt, he'll make up his points elsewhere, but a certain Peruvian tennis player will be less than delighted at the news...

This sucks, I was planning on going to this tournament at some point the week before.

Possibly New Haven might take this event?

Will Hewitt's defend-points be transferred across to the replacement tourney, or simply cancelled?

Hewitt will keep the points on his record for the normal 52 week period.

Works the same way for Ricardo Mello's Delray Beach title last year - he still keeps the points until September, or when Schalken won Costa do Sauipe in the fall and it moved to spring.

Atlanta Athletic Club (old site of professional tournament)

or

Lincoln Tennis Center (old Olympic site, it isn't _that_ bad now, and if a professional tournament came, I guarantee they would make it fine)

Oh yea, Atlanta Athletic Club is mainly green clay, so they would need to convert courts, or use the few hard courts they have. Not 100% sure how that would work out.

it probably wouldn't, unless the club was willing to tear out the clay courts just for the tournie.
