Blake, Gimelstob, Gambill Commit To Forest Hills Clay Court Classic

By Tennis Week
04/28/2005

James Blake and Justin Gimelstob headline a homecoming on clay and you can attend — free of charge. The Yonkers-born Blake and New Jersey native Gimelstob are among the entries for the Forest Hills Clay Court Classic, scheduled for May 7-14th at the legendary West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills.

Top-seeded Jeff Morrison, Jan-Michael Gambill and defending champion Juan Pablo Guzman join Blake and Gimelstob in the draw of the $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit Event, a tune-up for the French Open.

"With 10 of the 22 direct entries in the draw having been ranked in the top 100 in the world, the talent and competitiveness of this year’s tournament is better than ever," tournament director Dina Ingersole said. "It is fitting that The West Side Tennis Club, with its long history of being a showcase for the world’s top tennis talent, is hosting The Forest Hills Clay Court Classic and giving New Yorkers the opportunity to see world class tennis up close."

Admission is free to the tournament matches from the qualifying on May 7-8th through the semifinals on May 13th. Admission to the finals on May 14 is $10 for adults; $5 for children. Tickets will be sold at the gate.

During tournament week, The West Side Tennis Club is also hosting Tennis and Jazz in Times Square on Tuesday, May 10th. A concert by jazz great David Sanborn and exhibition tennis with tournament players, tennis wheelchair champions including two-time Paralympian Karin Korb, and Olympians from NYC2012’s Circle of Olympians, including gold medalists Sarah Hughes and Oksana Baiul, will be open to the public from 1-5 p.m. in the Times Square Studios at Broadway and West 44th Street.

"New York City is very excited to welcome these top international tennis players from around the world," said Wendy Hilliard, NYC2012’s Director of Sports. "As we approach the final stages of the 2012 Olympic bid process, The Forest Hills Clay Court Classic and Tennis and Jazz in Times Square are terrific examples of the city’s dedication to promoting and showcasing Olympic sports on a grand stage."

Other activity during the Forest Hills Clay Court Classic tournament week includes youth tennis clinics, a wheelchair tennis exhibition on Wednesday, May 11th and dinner and a jazz concert with saxophonist Geoff Mattoon on Friday evening, May 13th, all at The West Side Tennis Club. Tickets for the jazz concert/dinner may be purchased by calling The West Side Tennis Club at (718) 268-2300. I'm just trying to keep you amused and somewhat sane during your 'exam procrastinations.' Margarita?

There's a player in that draw, who shall forever remain nameless, that I was tempted to make really really really small, just for fun. But I believe in karma so we'll just leave it and let them fight it out on court. Go James (and Justin, and Bobby).

I need to take another look at the lists for the next few weeks. I am sure that Justin and Goldstein are not playing RG qualies, but Justin is playing a bunch of Challengers. He must be loading up Challenger points before he has to defend that title he won last June before Wimbledon. No one fun will be at Yuba City at the end of this month. I may not have to go up there after all...

That is weird they make him play on Monday... I assume the final is Saturday? I guess the only positive thing is if he makes a full run he wouldn't have to play 5 matches in 5 days. Hope his match against Gabashvili isn't until Wed.

If he makes the semis or finals, maybe I'll go.

Tricky_Forehand
05-09-2005, 01:54 AM
He's probably playing on Monday because he did play a Final on Saturday. If it had been on Sunday, I'm sure that James would have played Tuesday. Also, playing tomorrow gives him (and the others playing) a day off on Tuesday rather than the possibility of play Tuesday-Saturday.

According to the dates on the PDF...it is a Saturday Final.

That is an excellent point. He did have Sunday 'off' and I'm sure it wasn't a hard trip to get from Memphis (the nearest airport) to NYC. This is another Saturday final tournament, and that's good for the guys who need to get to RG for qaulies on Tuesday, so it could work out best for James in the end.

Fee, I dunno why they wouldn't play together. As far as I know they basically always played together in college. I mean, they're twins. I'd be really freaked out if I saw Mike or Bob Bryan in a doubles draw with some other guy. But it doesn't sound like tennis is the top priority for the Barkers, at least not at this point, so maybe William couldn't make it, or something? I dunno. It really does seem odd, though.

http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/news?slug=ap-foresthillschallenger&prov=ap&type=lgnsTop seed upset in Challenger event
May 9, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- Vasilis Mazarakis, who has never won a tournament since turning professional in 2003, upset top-seeded Justin Gimelstob, a two-time member of the U.S. Davis Cup team, in the opening round of the USTA Forest Hills Clay Court Classic on Monday.

The 25-year-old from Greece beat Gimelstob 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 for his second win in three matches this year on the Challenger Series.

Gimelstob, 28, of Santa Monica, Calif., won four titles in the Challenger Series last year. His best showing in a Grand Slam event was reaching the third round in the U.S. Open in 1997, the year he turned pro, and at Wimbledon in 2003.

In another first-round match, James Blake, who also played Davis Cup from 2001-03, routed Hars Uebel of Germany 6-1, 6-2.

The seventh-seeded Blake won the Harrah's Challenger Series event last week in Tunica, Miss.

Blake, 26, of Tampa, Fla., missed most of last year because of a fractured vertebra and paralysis in his face.

Good Luck bro getting scores.

I just called again to get an update on the Lipsky-Armando match and the women told me it just started. Now when i spoke to the man about 40 minutes ago he told me they were just starting the 3rd set.

Wrong gender ;)

Well, I'm calling for only one result tomorrow and It doesn't look like I will start calling till about 5:30 (EDT).

So all you bettors will have to rely on Corey...

I think it is because if they had played together they wouldn't have made the cut. Richard has previously played tournaments without his brother (don't know why). Because of this he has a higher ranking 242, compared to his brother's 345. This would mean a total ranking of 587. The cut for this tournament is 538 meaning they would have missed out. Richard's partner Scott Lipsky is ranked 196 giving them a ranking of 438 making the cut comfortably.

It might of course just be because william's ill or something but it might be the ranking issue.

i was at the tournament.............
in alex's match, delic was making a lot of errors, hitting lots of long balls. But, Alex was making him run which delic seemed to have trouble with at the end of the second set and he just let the balls go by. he didn't look too comfortable throughout the match.
brian baker won against robert kendrick 6-4, 6-0.
And I believe that Santiago Gonzalez beat Zbynek Mlynarik in a third set, 6-4? I'm not sure but I did hear "final set" from the umpire.
Juan Pablo Brzezicki defeated Melvyn Op Der Heijde 6-4, 7-5.
and Juan Pablo Guzman beat Diego Alvarez, but I don't remember the score.
In the morning, Wayne Odesnik defeated Thomas Blake.

Yea Alex was playing pretty well. From what I remember Delic wasn't breaking Alex's serve, but Delic's serve was probably the only thing that was helping to save him in the couple of games he won. He did hit some pretty clear aces during his service games, so his serve gave some trouble to Alex. But other than that, Alex gave Delic some high forehands, which Delic was hitting into the middle of the net. Delic didn't go for some slice backhands that he had to make to stay in some points as well. During the last game of the match Alex was giving Delic shots from side to side and then eventually hit to make Delic hit the slice backhand. But I don't think Delic adjusted his footwork well enough to hit those shots and gave up in the game that was going to set Alex up for matchpoint. Delic just wasn't really looking good with his overall game, but Alex was using his opportunities when he had them. Alex seemed more relaxed probably since he was going into the match with the losing record to Delic.

Was Dusan's match a long one? He rarely plays short matches and I figure that maybe why there is no result for Alex yet.

alex bogomolov vs. wayne odesnik started as an interesting match in the first set. odesnik is quite an impressive lefty. both had nice groundstroke exchanges. there were only like 5 people in the seats watching this match which i think is pretty pathetic for a challenger in new york city. shows you how much people want to come out and watch a match against 2 young american players.

i don't think guzman is on court yet since healey vs. gonzalez went on a little late..since michael russell's match was longer than usual (that match was where the whole crowd was...at that was probably only like 20 people  .)
dusan vemic's match was i'd say close to 2 hours maybe. so he did have a long one.

My experience is that Challengers don't normally draw huge crowds. Now knowing that Alex didn't have a lot of people there cheering for him...that's what I'm not happy about.

I see that you are drawing out the suspense here...

lol i'm just saying that if its a free event to watch some of the top guys why not come. but, i guess people don't want to bother seeing guys ranked in the 100s and 200s come out and play. its bad for the players as well though because at least some more people can come out and give them some extra support or motivation, i mean come on there can't be a player out there who can't admit that at least a few people applauding for them during the match could help them a little. i mean there were no applause whatsoever from those 5 people. Probably the only person who was sitting out there and giving alex support at the match was travis.

anyway i dont know exactly what time they started but i would definitely think they would be finished by now. maybe you could give me the # to the tournament desk or wherever you call, I could call since it'll be local.

yea sorry i moved that part of the message over here, so you could reply to this one I guess. sorry for the confusion lol.
