Fed and Safin to me was just amazing I was there and I still don't think I have gotten over that match.

I watched Nadal and Gasquet today and that will probably be second.

AO: Safin v Federer and Nadal v Hewitt
Indian Wells: Roddick v Hewitt
Nasdaq 100: Federer v Agassi (even though it was 6-4 6-3, the match was played at a VERY HIGH level, really close and tough), Federer Nadal.

Federer vs. Safin. That match was so exciting, my eyes were glued to the set almost the entire time. And it's weird since they're not even my favorite players.

Also Nadal vs. Federer at Miami. I really thought Nadal was going to win, he was so impressive. That's the first time I really thought 'wow, this kid has some serious talent.' :)

The importance of the match is what does it for me. There might be others of similar quality, but that AO match was over five sets, and it was a semi with two of the biggest talents in the game

I agree that it was because of the significance of the match, Roger-Marat AO semi. The quality of the match alone is great with all the intensity and the artistry of shotmaking. It became all the more captivating especially becoz the defeated even had a matchpoint in tie-break, and the eventual winner hit a lottery lob, which was to turn the match around.

But what's more important is that it was a rematch between two most talented players like you said. It is therefore more than a physical and technical battle, but a duel of two minds, two exceptional egos, two wills, who both wanna prove to themselves, more than anyone on earth, that one of them is better than the other. Roger in particular is a defending champion who got questioned all the time whether he could repeat the success he had last year...so he had a lot at stake. Marat also had a lot at stake too since he had to prove to people and himself whether he was a loser or not (though talented but still loser). Both recognized this significance going to the match which resulted in the incredible intensity that night.

Last year Marat couldn't do much against Fed becoz he was tired from all the five-setters, but in TMC semi last year, Marat showed people what he could do to Fed and people just hope that next time he might win and he did against a defending champion who also gave it all in that match. At the end of that night, I think they both got equal credits and no one would call either of them a loser. When two men compete to show the best in them, not the worst, dark side, that match is guaranteed to be a classic.

I also like Nadal-Gasquet match. While Fed-Gasquet match might be a little superior in terms of beautiful shot-making, but Nadal-Gasquet match has the same significance as Fed-Safin match, though in less degree. They both are talents of the future years and in that match, I think they have things to prove to themselves more than to the fans or the press. In a few years, we might see the revisit of Fed-Safin match by these two youngsters in much bigger stage.

Federer - Safin AO05

I doubt any match for the remainder of this year could surpass it....not just the quality, but for the whole build up of the match, and what the outcome meant....the defeat of the unbeatable, breaking the massive streak of wins against top 10 players etc...it just held more importance than I think any other match this year could hold

Others worth mentioning - AO Hewitt v Nadal (the real arrival of Nadal this year, Hewitt beginning his monumental fight against injury and fatigue), AO Hewitt v Nalbandian (big see-saw, awesome 5th), AO Hewitt v Roddick (Aussie into the final, making the point that Lleyton is the real no.2)

Of the best of 3 matches

Hewitt v Roddick Indian Wells SF

I havent seen Nadal v Federer Miami yet, or Nadal v Gasquet, Federer v Gasquet from Monte Carlo

Good that Roger did appear in THE matches of the year so far unlike last year
Too bad that he had to lose in THE match of the year so far for me...you know which one :( Even worse is that I seriously doubt any match will top that one in the rest of the year :(

I am not so pessimistic, it is only April. Furthermore, I don't think that this match was so high qualitywise, It was tense, exciting, close and there was a lot at stake, that's all true. Having said this, I have to admit that my tape had run out at 2 all, fifth set.

When Safin is playing, you can expect it to be the worst match of the year or the best match of the year!

The funny thing is that the best match of 2004 was also an AO semifinal, 5 sets very close between Safin and Agassi.

For me, the points you listed above are the major factors for a match to be THE one of the year, plus quality of course which that one didn't lack in any way. Also the importance of the match, the big stage, the meaning of the result...To put it in a maybe improper way, I actually feel the match, was the only one uptil now.

But I doubt if the result had been the other way round it would still be THE one of the year so far for many...

It's no problem it remained THE match of the whole year for me as long as Roger keeps winning much again...;) which he did :D
