Incredible  ...I could have sworn that Gasquet was going to lose as soon as he couldn't serve it out at the end of the third. And then Federer even had chances in the tiebreak, I thought it's over.

But credits to Gasquet for digging this one out, only a little bit decided in this match and it was to Gasquet's favour this time. Great effort by the so "overhyped and overrated" Frenchman as some say ;) he certainly has quietened a few doubters by this BIG win...

After this tournament, his #101 ranking should be history for quite a while then!

Richard really did deserve it in the end and he hit some amazing winners in the final set tiebreak. Roger fought so hard from 2-5 down and had his match points but didn't make bad errors on them - Gasquet won those points.

At the same time it is scary what is all needed to beat Federer, even on clay when he was apparently not playing near his best. Gasquet escaped by the skin of his chin winning a third set tiebreak by a score of 10-8. And you need at least two breaks closing out the match (one is not enough) and a few match points, and be prepared to save a few match of Federer. And you must be playing really well and Federer not. Then, maybe then, you might win...

----

Losses do happen, even to Federer, even though they have been extremely rare lately. But look how he bounced back many times after losses, didn't seem to disturb him too much in his rhythm and if he peaks just in time for the French Open, he is at least a QF contender, if not more.

lucashg
04-15-2005, 05:54 PM
I still had hopes to see Federer winning this match as he surprised all of us by defeating Nadal in Miami, in similar conditions. He just wasn't good enough to beat Gasquet, who was brilliant at times and more consistent than Federer overall. That's also good for him to know that not always when he play bad he's gonna win as he did a couple of times in Dubai and in Miami.

That's such a win for Gasquet, it definitely should build up his confidence against whoever he faces (and we might see the "battle of the future clay-kings" as Nadal has a big chance to win against Gaudio). Now his rankings will improve already and hopefully we'll get to see more of him.

I still liked the fact that once again Federer didn't give away this match and fought until the end, he didn't play up to what he could in those MPs he had, but neither did Gasquet in his two first ones, so a totally deserved win for the french.

Federer, get ready for Rome and Hamburg, you can do it!

That's encouraging to him. He has only lost two times this year in such close scorelines where he even could have won those matches. I hope he's gonna bounce back as well as he did after the AO and get ready for the French.

His serve wasn't good at all. In the first and second sets he barely hit them, and Gasquet was jumping on his second serves. But now that's credit for his awesome returns. Gasquet wasn't that much better, but Federer was missing so many returns it was just

But he got better in the third set, as did Gasquet. So...

Why are people speechless and amazed? I really dont get it, its Federer's worst surface and Gasquet's best, hes a good player up and coming. Federer was never a 100% guarantee of winning this. All credit to Richard, hes got the "biggest" win of his young career just because of the name of whom he beat, but its not that huge of a surprise, I mean Federer has lost to Philippoussis on clay 2 years ago, I mean come on lets get real!

Sjengster
04-15-2005, 06:29 PM
Ultimately Gasquet won the match, Federer didn't lose it - even if he did make a couple of forehand errors on those matchpoints, Gasquet hit two clean winners off both wings to finally seal victory. He was very successful at jumping on Federer's second serve and ripping it for winners, he broke Federer four times in five service games and off the ground he was taking balls early and rushing Federer into errors. And after all the long rallies, the nerves from both men, the unbearable tension for the spectators, how about that backhand from Gasquet at the end? Cool as you like, straight down the line to its target.

No one considers Federer the favorite to win Roland Garros, except maybe Makro. He is one of the favorites? Yes, but there are others who are better than him on clay, i.e. Coria, Gaudio, Nadal, Ferrero, Moya and Guga (playing at their best, of course). Gasquet is a threat if he is able to live up to now high expectations (Berdych didn't yet), so we'll see.

Why is Fed not contender for RG? Beacuse he lost today?
He is good on clay. If two times clay masters winner is not a contender who would be? The interesting thing about RG is it has so many contenders and suprises, and Fed is one of them despite todays result me think.

Great performance by Gasquet :) Not a bad one by Roger though :p I hope Gasquet can catch up in the ranking and deliver more consistently. He has got it in him.

Have to be disappointed about the fact that Roger had to lose the match with MPs in hand AGAIN. But if you had the chance to see how Gasquet blew his one of his MPs in the game 5:3, then you would think it was actually quite fair. I had to laugh out loud at that miss...

For now I am tired of Nadal hype... any chance of Gasquet to beat him tomorrow?

You mean that you're tired of him winning. Because you can't possibly be tired of the hype - he hardly gets any credit for the stuff that he's done on here. It's nice to see Richard get credit for his victory over Fed. Richard hasn't done half what Nadal has (yet) and is far more respected.... funny, that ;)

Obivously i'm rooting for Nadal, but I don't like him playing Gasquet at all. Boo.

Well that is the only reason that Nadal has ever had any hype. His hype has always been a directly proportional to his results. So if you're sick of the hype, it follows that you'd have to be sick of him winning... since that is the only reason he has any :)

You don't have to see it that way :)

Gasquet is far more respected than Nadal? People may prefer his game more (including me), but I don't see anyone giving him more respect or suggesting that he is at a higher level in the game than Nadal right now. He hasn't even been a factor on the main tour until this week, and I haven't seen him being praised to the rafters before.

Federer played very poorly in 1st and 2nd set, Richard was average in 1st set and played great in he rest of the match. Roger raised a lot his level when down in the 3rd set and Richard won it deservedly playing some briliant points in final TB.

Your dreams are all out there just waiting for you And theres nobody else who can make them come true but you. They're there for you to follow and only you can make them happen!!!!
Federerhingis, this is what you have in your sig and this is why people are so happy for Richard. He has had so much hype and expectation and today he probably did something he has dreamt of for a long time, beating fed in a big tournament. Regardless of surface, and fed is great on clay anyway, its a great result and one to be celebrated.

Now dont get me wrong, I certainly agree Federer is no club player, but Hes not allowed to play his best game on clay. His serve is not as effective and his backhand becomes even more of a liability. Besides he wasnt playing his best. Gasquet is no club player either, I wouldnt say Federer was a heavy favorite, now had they played on grass and Federer was coming into the match with good rhythm then yes.

Its disappointing of course you never want your favorite to lose, besides he had his chances too. Nevertheless I dont see whats all the hype about, when he loses wimbledon before the semis and he had been playing up to his potential than I will start getting concerned.

Too funny!! Congrats to Mr. Gasquet!!!

Isnt that something onewoman? lol lol :haha: Really its sad how people just become europhoric after a Federer loss, way too funny! Now lets not forget after every bad loss hes had hes had countless of matchstreaks to make up for those small blips. After olympics loss won US open, went on to defend masters cup and almost made another slam final; and right after that loss he won two masters titles back to back. By the way hes still the #1 ranked player by miles and has a solid hold on the race for #1 too.

People just love to predict. Even funnier is "Who's gonna build up a real rivalry against Federer?" Safin, Ljubicic, Nadal and now Gasquet. Who's next?

I agree that Nadal and Gasquet have so much potential. Nadal's showing it already. Gasquet just had this great result, but only time will tell. It's the same as saying Federer is the greatest of all time. He could as well be, but will he? The same about Nadal's, Gasquet's and Monfils' probable successful careers.

I was really upset by his loss at the Australian Open because he was playing well, though Safin seemed to be inspiration in its definition and he was defending his title and his winning streak against TOP10 players. But, losses happen and his run after that has been incredible.

Today it just wasn't the same, as he was so far from his best, the scoreline was close, had his chances, but was outplayed fair and square. But he's still the best and everyone knows it. Good news is that the gap between him and Hewitt is gonna increase in both rankings and he's probably gonna rest a bit more and prepare himself for Rome and Hamburg.

I think that you're failing to understand that being elated with a Federer loss doesn't have to mean anything more that just that.. and that any old stat you feel like spitting out doesnt' change the fact that it's EXCITING for something to actually bloody happen in mens tennis besides Federer winning this tournament or that. Don't get me wrong. Federer is swell. It would just be nice if some of you could learn to distinguish between appreciating Fed but desiring parity, and simply hating Fed.

Nadal got credit when he beat Federer in 2004 as well. Gasquet has been treated like crap on this board prior to this week.

Why do you care if Nadal gets credit or not on MTF?

All I had been reading for the past weeks here in MTF was Nadal is the true rivalry, the guy to win RG etc etc. I even read a titile from BBS "Nadal is the real deal". What other credits is he not getting I don't know.

Gasquet? I wish people around here will talk more on how good this kid is in yesterday match than why Roger lost actually. He was hitting winners all over the court yesterday. Gasquet choked a bit while serving for match at the 3rd set but he didn't fold after that and continue to hold his nerves, saving MPs and then hit an amzing bh dtl winner to win the match. It was nice to see him winning the match with 2 great winners than actually from errors of Federer. Very nice game and I certainly hope to see more from him just as long as it's not on Federer's expense again :o It was also funny to see him being stunned or looked confused for few seconds after hitting that great bh winner at MP and then realised he did beat Federer ;)

As for Federer, like he said in his interview :

"So this is still a pretty good result for a first tournament on clay. On this, I can build. I know what I have to kind of work on. I know where I can still improve. I know what has been going well. For the season, I think it was the right choice to come to Monaco "

Many of us need to keep things in perspective like he does than make a big hoo haa each time he loses a match

Wow... just wow... Gasquet was hitting some incredible shots yesterday. He really was trying to take Ninja's second (and even first at times) serves early to unsettle Federer. I wonder if Gasquet's win will affect the way other players take on the Fed man from now on?

Congrats, kid. I thought you were overhyped, but apparently you're not.

He'll probably get smoked by Nadal in this tournament, but I hope he will eventually become the better of the two, as I'd rather see an elegant tennis player win than someone who puts so much effort into every shot as if it's the last shot of his career.

Roddick will never dominate the tour cause he´s all about his serve, even without Federer and if he had won twice Wimbledon, I don´t think we could call it a domination when he barely can win a match on clay

I'll continue to admire Federer's game whenever I can see him, but at the same time it is good, and good for the sport of tennis to see young players putting in an appearance. But beware, Federer is a very good learner and it is much too early to write him off.

At least,Nalbandian has already won some big titles and has made multiple GS 1/2 finals and a GS final.
Gasquet has yet to even win a big title, which is beginning to become ridiculous when you think that even players like Grosjean or Berdych have managed to do that!

Wasting talent? Gasquet has wasted talent in not winning a big title, 2 finals in 05/06 - when he didn't mature. Nalbandian won 2 AMS titles last year and TMC too, also defeating Federer in a huge match. Plus Nalbandian has reached a GS final, Nalbandian shits all over Gasquet.
At least Gasquet reached Wimbledon SF in 2007 and if he wasn't so tired he would have given Federer some trouble at least.

Nalbandian has won big titles but he should have 2 or 3 majors by now if he did not have a black belt in choking. The match he lost at the OZ open in the semis against Baggy when he had taken the first 2 sets :o. Yes Gasquet is worse than Nalbandian at underachieving.
