Which Gonzo showed up today?? :). Well after a 6-2 first set u'd think it was the wrong one except that Fernando wasn't really playing that bad. Just going got a little too much but certainly more in control than in his match against Roddick at IWs earlier this year.
Still going down a break with Federer serving 3-5, there doesn't really seem to be much point playing on except Federer has a suboptimal period and suddenly Fernando has broken back and goes on to win the tiebreak!!
Hopefully both find their best form now and an almighty tussle occurs. This has definitely been the most enjoyable match today (or in the championship so far) but then again we've got Ferrero-Safin to come!
Is anyone else watching this???!

All over now. Both played well in the third set but again one break by Federer was all that was needed in the end. Again the thing that sticks out most is Federer playing as well as he needed to in the 3rd set when in counted. He just tightened up his game another notch and never really seemed to be under pressure on his serve.
Gasquet next.. I wonder if Richard will push Fed like Nadal did.. I'll be surprised if he does but I hope he does!

Here's to hoping TSN shows this one here in 20 minutes or so. Although, seeing Safin-Ferrero live might even be better... Fed-Gasquet should be fun. :)

That was such a good match. Federer was on fire in that first set and still in the second he played in such a good level, but Gonzalez went for it and showed how good he really can be, but I was impressed that Federer lost the tie-break with only 2 points on his side. In the third, as you said, Federer was in total control of his service games and needed only a break to serve the match out.
It was good to see that Gonzalez never really gave up, both chose some questionable shots now and then, but overall it was a consistent match. The number of errors I guess it's usual for clay, still both had more winners.
By the way, what were those 2 break-points converted in that second set? I'd choose Federer as the best as he was always on the defensive side and found a way to hit that amazing shot, but Gonzalez' was just as good.
Great match, I hope this is a good sign for Federer's run on clay this year. I hope too he gets challenged by Gasquet who seems to be such a talented player, but of course I want Federer to win in the end.
From the matches I've seen in this tournament, this too gets my vote as the best one, but Volandri's match against Puerta was so exciting as well. Let's hope for a good match-up from Ferrero vs Safin and Nadal vs Rochus.

Seemed to be a good match, at least entertaining because Federer didn't win it too easily.
A very good try of Gonzalez! :yeah:

Congrats Rogi! Wow@Fernando putting up a fight after losing the first set!

that backhand winner to get the break in the 2nd set was amazing

Yup Gonzalez really held up his own. I thought he would actually have a good chance of an upset, but I am happy that Federer also held his good form. Sorry for underestimating you a bit! Seems like it was a very good solid entertaining match. Hope Federer can keep it up for at least another match or two, of course would love for him to win but the opponents only keep getting tougher. Gasquet seems to be running a hot tear, will probably be a tougher match than todays match. Richard seems like a steadier player, much more consistent than Gonzalez except not as explosive, however is very good on clay. Looking forwar to this match!

Its longer than i thought but Well done ROGI, finally still win :D

Well whoever goes on to win is surely going to have to play some very good tennis. Coria in scintillating form on clay again. Nadal lurking dangerously. Safin and Ferrero showing good tennis too. It's going to be an interesting rest of the tournament.
And it wasn't just the BH winner from Federer that was amazing. There were plenty of shots where the sheer power was amazing though that one was great for the fact that Federer just hung in there and hung in there and just when you thought Gonzo had the point in the bag, boom.. clean winner :).

I'm really proud of Feña because he wasn't deserving to lose the match in 2 sets and fought until the last point ... You're a real fighter :worship:
And of course congrats Rogi for win this important match :yeah:

I love bumping Roger victory threads because you never know which post is likely to incite a long drawn-out debate over why these threads don't belong in GM.
As for the match itself, a win against CHI/ESP/ARG on clay deserves to be mentioned. Props, Roger!

well done rogi!! even though he lost concentration in that second set eheh...reading the interviews of roger and marat... lol what they said about who's got the upperhand on clay (roger or marat?)....
Also when did this happen? (didnt watch)
Q. You did a very gentlemanly thing. You played a let on matchpoint.
ROGER FEDERER: Matchpoint?
Q. Yeah, at 6‑5, advantage to you.
ROGER FEDERER: I think that was Love‑15 maybe. 30‑All. That would have been for matchpoint.
I don't remember.
But it was clearly in, you know. It was not even a moment of doubt to actually walk up to the line, because I heard the line (smiling).
I don't know. On clay it's easy to give each other points. If you can call it fair play, I don't know, because the umpire will come down anyway so...
another funny thing lol... (nadal, gonzales?)
Q. So another up‑and‑coming 18‑year‑old to play now...
ROGER FEDERER: Getting old, geez (smiling).
