NOT a good day for the Brits. Out of 5 in action only 1 gets through, purely by virtue of a British clash!!!! :(

Mankad was a little Harsh on Childs I thought! :o I wouldn't be surprised to find Bates looking a little rough tomorrow after that result as well.

2 British clashes tomorrow - all between players that I respect. I shall have to cheer them all on! Good luck to Johnny (he'll need it!) and Tom.

Anway, I'll have a browse around tomorrow and see what is going on, and maybe get some photos, although will be very difficult if the event is indoors. The surface is acrylic which suggests outdoors but i find that hard to believe!

Back from a couple of hours spectating!! My worst suspicions were confirmed - the tourney is being played outdoors and it is quite windy.

Anyway - some results, before the BBC website has them! :p

Jamie Delgado played a brilliant match to put out fellow Brit Alex Bogdanovic in straight sets 7/5 6/3. Bogo had initiative in the first set with many break point chances but he just couldn't take them. He even had 0/40 at the start of the second set. Whether he took that game remains to be seen but Delgado won that set with two breaks mid-way.

Arvind Parmar played well to beat Sherwood 6/2 6/2. The match was closer than the scoreline suggests but Arv was to good at the back of the court for Sherwood and his patience had all but evaporated by the end.

Johnny Marray edged Masson in a tight 3-set thriller. I don't really know what to make of Masson. He tanked the second set towards the end and didn't look all that bothered throughout the 3rd set. He also kept rubbing one of his shoulder blades so maybe he has an injury? Anway, after much yelling and talking to himself Johnny was gifted the match on a Masson df, to which the Belgian smashed his racquet and spent a good 5 minutes examining it afterwards when sitting on some wet grass....he then proceeded to try to force it into a litter bin, but anyone could see that it just wouldn't fit! :smash: :retard:

There were a lot of players milling around, several whom I did not recognise! I might have even seen Carraz practising...but I'm not sure! I'll check out his match tomorrow and see whether I was right. I did see, and get autographs from Gimelstob and Heuberger. I also saw the Thai twins, Udomchoke, Greul (strange man), Amritraj, De Voest, Stakhovsky...and even that idiot, Mark Petchey (is that how you spell it?!!)

Anyway, I'll go tomorrow and see if I can identify some of these players!! :wavey:

Everyone was milling round and the players looked edgy and put off. I didn't want to add to their frustrations really. Don't worry - I'm going to the Nottingham Open so I will DEFINITELY take pictures of anyone you want there!

...and for your information..Alex's hair was quite short and natural colour! ;) Don't get me started on Delgado!!! :haha:

this is an lta run tournie so what do you expect :)

the best place to check for updates on scores are here for people who have been to the tournie and posted and also at the bbc website, in the tennis section the is a link for uk results which seems to update fairly quickly.

the lta offical site for tournie hasnt been working, but i wouldnt expect much even if it were.

Well it is wet here yeah but it hasn't been raining as such. The nature of the court surface is that if there is a drop of rain on it it is dangerous to play. I haven't been to the Tennis Centre today but I'd imagine that play has got going but is a little slow.

I hate playing on damp harc courts, you just have no confidnce moving around cause u may fall sand reallly hurt yourself, i just dont understand why we cant build big clear plastic (to allow light) roofs over these things in the uk.

Incidentally there is one over two courts but the onditions are different so i guess if there has been no play they'll try to catch up tomorrow. They have a day in hand because they usually play the final on Saturday.

As I suspected, play was washed out today, although it seems that the doubles QF went ahead though. Nevertheless, all 2nd round singles scheduled for 10:00am, each couple to a different court, and the QF singles is played from 1:30. If you are one of the unfortunate (!!!) players to get to singles SF and have to play doubles QF as well (around 3:00pm)....you will be very tired!

2nd rd:

Jean-Michel Pequery (Fra) bt Gregory Carraz (Fra) (1) 6-4 6-4

Robin Vik (Cze) (6) bt Joshua Goodall (Gbr) 6-2 6-3

Harsh Mankad (Ind) bt Ivo Heuberger (Sui) (3) 6-3 7-6 (7-4)

Filip Prpic (Swe) bt Pavel Snobel (Cze) (7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4

Prakash Amritraj (Ind) bt Jacob Adaktusson (Swe) 6-4 6-4

Justin Gimelstob (USA) (2) bt Arvind Parmar (Gbr) 7-5 6-2

Jamie Delgado (Gbr) bt Danbai Udomchoke (Tha) 6-7 (7-5) 6-4 6-4

Jonathan Marray (Gbr) bt Yeu-Tzuoo Wang (Tpe) (4) 6-2 5-7 6-4,

Superb stuff from Jamie and Johnny!!! These 2 play each other now (they have probably already played by now!) and then poor old Johnny goes back on to court for his 3rd match of the day - SF doubles.

One thing is guaranteed - a Brit in the SF to play (Q) Amritraj or Gimelstob (2)!!!!!

H. Mankad (Ind) def F. Prpic (Swe) 6/1 6/2
J. Marray (GB) def J. Delgado (GB) 7/5 ret
J. Gimelstob (USA) (2) def (Q) P. Amritraj (Ind) 6/3 6/3

Delgado retired with a split toe-nail - ouch!!! Poor Jamie. :bigcry:

Johnny has been saved from a doubles match today as well (!!) - he plays Justin at 11:00am tomorrow and his doubles with Mark Hilton no earlier than 2:00pm against the #2 seeds Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana (Tha).

I reckon Johnny has a 40% chance - he is serving and volleying well and should match up nicely for Gimelstob. Could be close...but there again lack of experience and fatigue may play a part! Good luck Johnny, and Mark later on.

Horatio Caine

Johnny is in line for a huge rankings rise on Monday. He has 6 points from Greece F1 and another 22 points from Nottingham SF to go on the computer, giving him a rise of 32 places to approximately 229 - a career high!!! :woohoo:

Jamie Delgado gains 12 points and should make approximately 206, a rise of 11 places.

Arvind will avoid relegation to GB #5 win his 5 points - a rise of 3 places to 203.

Josh Goodall continues to rise - he'll break the top 300 for the first time at around 299, a rise of 8 places.

So, on Monday we should now have 10 Brits in the top 300!!! :woohoo: 7 will be in the top 250 with a further 2 less than 10 places behind! That is incredible!

Furthermore, the competition for GB #4 hots up with Arv, currently holding the position, facing immediate pressure from Delgado, Hilton and Marray. Good job lads!!!

I question how much energy Johnny has left (!!) but if he can manage it, a win over the red-hot Robin Vik would put him at GB #5 at around 205, a couple of places ahead of Delgado and a couple behind Arv!! What a scrap for GB #4, and possibly #3 over the next few months!! :woohoo:

Czech mate for Johnny Marray!

A lovely day at the Tennis Centre - sun shining, warm...maybe a little windy...but excellent weather for tennis!

I arrived 20 minutes after the singles final started and had my worst suspicions confirmed...Johnny was being hammered! Vik finished off the first set with 2 breaks...and started where he left off in the first set, in the second set. Johnny didn't play badly in his service games, but Vik's returns were frighteningly good and very consistent. Vik had the initiative throughout the second set, forcing 3 break points in Johnny's opening service game...but he could'nt convert thanks to some excellent volleying from the Brit. Things looked good when Johnny went 40/0 up in his next service game only for Vik to hit 5 straight passing shots, mostly on the backhand wing to break...and Johnny held serve only once after that.

The problem for Johnny was his returning...it wasn't that good at all. Many unforced errors from the back of the court...and I guess he lost confidence in the fact that he just couldn't unduly hurt his opponent at the net either. Johnny was also let down a little by his serving...he double-faulted the match away in the 4th game of the second set...I guess he felt under pressure to deliver some big second serves to get him out of trouble.

Nevertheless, a brilliant week for Johnny...his first challenger final (first of many we hope) and a rankings rise from 261 to top 220 on Monday!!! :woohoo:

Final result - R. Vik (CZE) (6) def J. Marray (GBR) 6/3 6/2.

For good measure I got Vik's autograph...I didn't get a certain young Swede's autograph 2 years ago when I had the chance. He ended that year in the high 100s and ended last year at #11 after reaching the US Open semis!! I could see Vik being top 50 by the end of the year...but his serve needs a little more bite.

I did take a few pictures but unfortunately they won't upload...if anyone requests to see them then I will PM them ;)

I decided not to stay for the doubles final featuring Johnny (again!) and Mark. There were no indications as to when it would be (probably on now!) as Johnny needed suitable rest...and I will probably see the British duo in 8 weeks at the Nottingham Open anyway...so at some point I will probably get some pictures of them...maybe even playing doubles together again. :wavey:
