Some great news for the tennis fans around Duesseldorf: Australia with top player Lleyton Hewitt, currently the number 2 in the world, will get the wildcard for this year’s ARAG ATP World Team Championship to be held at the Rochusclub on May 15-21.

This was announced by tournament director Dietloff von Arnim: “Lleyton Hewitt is currently the second best player in the world which guarantees top level as well as attraction. This made the decision for Australia relatively easy for the ATP and us.” Wayne Arthurs will be the second singles player besides Hewitt. The strongserver recently won his first ATP title at Scottsdale, Arizona.

I think it was a very good decision to give the wildcard to Australia ;)

But I was almost sure before that Australia will get it :)

stupid question but why didn't they get direct entry? was it to do with hewitt confirming his particpation in the event??

esp given hewitt and flip played out of their skins last year

esp given hewitt and flip played out of their skins last yearAustralia was not one of the top 7 ranked teams at the end of 2004. Australia's combined ranking was 83 (Hewitt 3, Arthurs 80) and the cut-off was 42.

Look out for that lethal Wayne Arthurs/Scott Draper combo now. I guess the organizers can't take the wildcard back, can they?

I guess the organizers can't take the wildcard back, can they? They did kick #4 qualifier Russia out & replace them with France after Safin refused to play, but it's probably too late to find another team to replace Australia at this point.

Maybe we see Luczak/Arthurs now!
Would be nice for Luczak to get this chance now as Lleyton can't come here...

In doubles, Luczak/Arthurs can for sure challenge most of all teams, but in singles I expect they will go down (easily?!) to most opponents at this tournament.

in short: AN ENORMOUS BLOW FOR THE AUSSIE TEAM
the highest ranked player of the tournament is missing the team and they don't have anything near Hewitt to back up this loss (the gap between him and the 2nd best ranked player, Arthurs, is soooooooooooo huge)
