Ok, this thread is an excuse to post hot pics of Jelena Dokic....
but I thought while we were at it we could moniter her progress
because we all want to see her get back to the top of the game. :)

p.s.
Anyone wanna call Andy and play match maker?
(I hear Jelena is single again ;) )

To be honest, I only ever liked her because she was pretty. I'm shallow like that, and root for the pretty people. That's why I started rooting for Golovin and Kirilenko

For some reason I don't do this with the men as much. I guess I'm just a big sexist

The difference is the training bra she wore, and that black/grey fila outfit (2nd one) was a tight fit, so everything looks bigger. Oh and no Dokic's breats are not fake, you can tell fake boobs pretty easily, Jelena is all natural.;) She's a bit on the chunky side, so she has big boobs.

That is correct, but breat sizes usually change when your weight changes. Dokic, for the most part, has always been the chunky type and the difference between the two photos I was talking about, she was almost the same weight.;) Obviously if you would compare say a 2003 photo (where Heinz was making her insanely skinny) to prior photos, you'll see a huge difference.

Ohhh...well...how about we get on topic with more Jelena!

Ground zero: Dokic back from burnout
Jelena: ĎSome things you canít settle the way you want and some you can. Iíve done what I can doí

By Matthew Cronin, TennisReporters.net

Susan Mullane/Camerawork USA
Dokic: "I donít want to say that I didnít want to be on court, but thatís what it seemed like."
FROM THE PACIFIC LIFE OPEN AT INDIAN WELLS Ė Whatís life like these days for former Top 5 player and Wimbledon semifinalist Jelena Dokic? Not exactly bed of roses, but it is filled with more sunshine than dark clouds.

She had to ask a friend to get her a room at the Esmerelda resort, the normal WTA playersí hotel at Indian Wells. Dokic, who beat Lilia Osterloh in three sets in the second round of the Pacific Life qualifying on Monday, was surprised that she simply couldnít put cash down and get a room, but thatís what life is like for qualifiers. However, she was told that if she qualified, she could get her own room. Thatís an interesting option for someone with nearly $3.8 million in career prize money. Welcome to the life of unwashed doubles masses. "I donít know if separating players like that is right," she said. "Itís strange."

Last year was by the far the worst one of the tall blondeís career, as she lost 12 times in the first round and left the tour for six months because she was totally burnt out. She ended 2004 ranked a career low No. 125. During her time off, Dokic had her tonsils removed and had nose surgery to open up her airwaves. Sheís back on tour now and says sheís refreshed and eager to go, although she says sheís only playing at 50-60 percent of her ability and looks a little out of shape.

Dokic didnít ask for a wild card into the main draw because she needs to get matches in and the confidence that comes with posting any kind of victory. Sheís rusty and although you can see signs of her once-lethal form when she cracks a return or sets up and whacks a backhand down the line, sheís still quite inconsistent and her serve is way off. Still, the woman with a perpetual on-court frown is smiling a bit off court and appears eager again Ė traits you didnít see from the honest-yet-troubled Serb last year. Dokic says that playing Fed Cup this year is out of the question (she played for Serbia last year) and itís doubtful sheíll ever play for Australia again.

Late last year, Dokicís controversial father and former coach, Damir, said he was asked to coach his daughter again. The two have been estranged on and off for the past three years. It appears now that that so-called father/coach-daughter reunion didnít gather much steam, as Jelena is again being coached by Borna Bikic, the man who Damir called a know-nothing and who he blamed for most of Jelenaís problems. She living in Monte Carlo again and is still dating Bikicís brother.

While Dokic has made numerous claims of revival during the two years, the 21-year-old did appear sincere when discussing how much she has matured and how she feels like she now has her life under control. The following Q and A with Dokic was conducted by TennisReporter.netís Matthew Cronin and the Desert Sunís Leighton Ginn.

Q: Whereís your level right now?
A: Most of what I need to do will come from matches. Iím starting from zero again. With more than six months off, itís hard. But Iím practicing well. I have a long way to go. Itís hard to close out matches and play the big points, but Iím feeling better.

Q: When you were off and taking your break, did you decide to return because you had goals left to achieve, or because you just enjoy playing?
A: Thereís more that Iíd like to do. But I really have fun when I play. Even when I was losing I had fun in practice. Even after I finish tennis I would always want to be involved. I like the sport. I wanted a break. but was missing it at the same time.

Q: In your mind, are you still a Top-5 player?
A: I think I can get to minimum Top 20. Iíll just try to get close to the top again. After last year with how down I got, I donít want to make goals. Iíll be more realistic.

Q: What was the worst part of last year?
A: I wasnít determined and motivated and not able to practice like I wanted to. Mentally I wasnít focused. I donít want to say that I didnít want to be on court, but thatís what it seemed like. I had so much tennis. I needed the time off. I was very low on motivation and burnt out. For a while there last year I didnít feel I could get a ball in. When you get to that stage, it's times to take a break. But I think Iím good enough to have a break and come back.

Q: How does someone as good as you fall to zero? You were very good and itís not easy to fall that far. Do you really feel like you are back at zero?
A: Iím not a negative person, but Iíve really fallen back. Hopefully I can get a good break somewhere. Confidence has a lot to with it. Iím that kind of player. Physically I have gone back to zero. Mentally I feel better. But it takes so much to come back to a good level. Iíve had to suffer. When you donít you play, itís difficult to do it again. But for me to say Iím going to do it is a big step.

Q: How much has maturing as a person helped you in this process?
A: Iíve gotten older. Iíve had to find myself in my life. All the problems built up and my tennis suffered. It was difficult. Tennis-wise and life-wise, I have to focus on myself. When I was younger, I dealt with things very well and thought nothing could ever affect me. I was very focused and could block things out. But you have to be very calm off court. Eventually it catches up and affects your mind and the results catch up. But Iíve dealt with it.

Q: Other players who have gone through off-court problems say that you canít play your best until you get your off court life squared away. Have you settled what you need to off court?
A: Some things you canít settle the way you want and some you canít. Iíve done what I can do. Itís out of my hands. Iím very comfortable in my mind and am not going to let anything affect my on-court performance. Itís really let me down when I havenít been able to play well. I need to be able to compete. I donít want things to bother me and affect my tennis.

Q: There has been a perception that you havenít been in control of your own life. Are you calling the shots now? Are you in control of your own life and career?
A: If I do something right of wrong now, itís totally on me. I like it that way. I know people have forgotten about me and donítí have respect for me on court and are counting me out. In a way I like that. Hopefully Iíll play better than I did.

JELENA CORNER
February 8, 2005

Page Three Girl
by Todd Spiker

Here we are in February 2005... and Jelena is suddenly a "page three girl."

Now, don't go thinking that means something it doesn't. A topless Jelena isn't gracing the pages of any newsstand tabloids unless some elaborate
cut-and-paste jobs are going on behind closed doors. No, in this case, Jelena's new "standing" refers to needing to go all the way to the third page of the WTA website's rankings (see for yourself -- http://www.wtatour.com/rankings/singles_numeric.asp?page=3) to find a certain Dokic's name these days. She's currently residing on the #201-300 page, nestled right at #209, one spot behind Stanislava Hrozenska and one ahead of Tatiana Poutchek. Jelena hasn't visited this bad neighborhood in quite some time.

**THE AGASSI ROAD?**

Luckily for the Formerly Fair One, she still has a name stuck in many people's memory banks. That's enough to earn her a wild card entry and exemptions all over the tour. She can likely get into most any tournament she wants no matter her ranking. But it could be that Jelena hasn't stooped sufficiently enough to gain the leverage she needs to lift herself up from the depths her tennis hasn't seen since before her career-breaking upset of Martina Hingis nearly six years ago. One could probably piece together a pretty good argument that it might be a good experience to go though the rigors of qualifying, or get a dose of how the "other half" lives by traversing the game's true "backwoods" region -- the challenger circuit -- for her hoped-for resurrection to have any real "teeth." It could help sharpen a mind and game that can't help but have become dull after so many losses. If she takes a deep breath and follows a path such as that, ala Andre Agassi in '97 following a drop to #141, she'd surely learn a great deal about herself and how much she's willing to do to reclaim her lost place in the game she's been playing for most of her life. Jelena's never won an ITF event, having made one final (in Saga, Japan in '98, losing to Alicia Molik) in limited action. Participating in a few events now would at least provide a reasonably attainable goal to strive for. It's not likely to come to pass, but if these 1st/2nd Round exits continue unabated for another month or two it'll need to be considered, simply to provide her with match play. As Jelena said last year, "The trouble is you can't play many matches when you lose them."

Jelena's followed through on the plan to play lower-tiered events early in '05, choosing a Tier IV in India this week over a II in Paris with a field that includes three of the top four-ranked players in the world, but still went down in straight sets today in a 1st Round match against world #177 Mara Santangelo in Hyderabad. She's 1-2 so far in her late-starting 2005 season, opening each match with a tie-break in something of an immediate litmus test for how her day will eventually turn out. The only match she's won so far (over Anne Kremer) was after she opened with a tie-break victory... while she's failed to win a single set in any match where she's fallen a set behind. At least she's not being routed 1-and-2 these days (yet), and the more time on the court Jelena gets is probably for the better no matter how things turn out at this point in the season. But, right now, it's hard to gauge whether this slow start means anything for the rest of the year. Throw in the elbow injury that hindered her late last year, her offseason nose surgery and the leg injury that forced her retirement from the Alyona Bondarenko match last week and Jelena is a walking question mark, not the exclamation point she was up until the middle of '02, nor the lonely period at the end of every sentence she was at the conclusion of '04.

**DANIELA'S BLUEPRINT**

One CAN at least look at Daniela Hantuchova these days for encouragement. She never dropped as low in the rankings as Jelena is right now, but for the last two years she's suffered through a series of mostly down moments. Thus far in '05, she's starting to show positive progress toward inching back to her one-time Top 5 status. Her two tie-break loss to Svetlana Kuznetsova at least allowed her to employ the same mindset that Ivo Karlovic displayed last year after his good Wimbledon run was ended by Roger Federer. Karlovic said, "I'm happy with my result here. I just wish I played someone less good."

Jelena's no where near that sort of moment yet, but Hantuchova finally is. It's a long road back.

**BOTTOMED OUT?**

Jelena opened 2005 with only 281 points to defend from '04 (she's already lost the 149 from Tokyo's SF), so any decent results at all will allow her some form of movement up the WTA rankings. Of course, based on what we've seen so far, even that isn't a fait accompli. The good news, though, is that her ranking has pretty much bottomed-out.

Her largest point-drop remaining is the 55 from Miami (after that, it's 35 in Doha and 27 in Charleston). After April, she has just a vast collection of 1st/2nd Round exits on her 12-month ledger. In the second half of the season, she'll defend just 3 measly points. So, any win now is a building block for the possibility of making some real progress from the grasscourt season to the end of the year.

**THE WEATHERMAN SAYS...**

A week ago, the optimistic forecast on the Corner was one of mostly fair skies, but with a threat of clouds. After a retirement, two lost tie-breaks, three lost sets and the beginning of another losing streak (at two, making Jelena 1-11 in her last twelve WTA matches) it's already looking quite overcast around these parts.

It's no time for a vacation. It's time for hard work.

Last week, Jelena stated that she wanted to play until she was into her late twenties. At just 21, that's a lot of years still ahead of her. She has to become a "Page Two Girl" before she can ever be a "Page One Girl" again. And before she can be the Fair One again, she has to be the Patient One. Patience has never been one of Jelena's strongest qualities, either.

Hopefully, with age and lack of success, she'll learn how to play that role by the end of this season. The Patient One can become the Determined One before the end of 2005, and then she might finally be able to see that "fair" destination up ahead of her again. Right now, though, it seems a long trek to get there. Let's hope she's up to it.

All for now.

Dokic slump continues in Estoril
Mon 25 Apr, 2005

ESTORIL, Portugal --Troubled Jelena Dokic's return after a seven week absence ended in misery when she crashed out on the opening day of the Estoril WTA Open.

The former Australian, who less than three years ago stood fourth in the world, lost her will as she bottomed out with a first-round loss against Ukrainian Alyona Bondarenka 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

Now ranked 450th in the world Dokic refused to shake hands with her opponent after the match.

This was the first time Dokic had hit a ball in anger since losing in qualifying rounds last month in Indian Wells.

The Estoril event, which also features an ATP side with Carlos Moya the top seed on the clay, was only the third competition for Dokic this season after Pattaya, where she won a round in February, and Hyderabad, India.

Dokic, who took back her Serbia-Montenegro nationality a few years ago after quitting Australia where she learned her tennis, now has few options in the game.

The 140,000-dollar WTA side of the event is the lowest on the women's professional ranks, with Dokic getting in on an injury protected ranking.
Italian Flavia Pennetta heads the field as top seed, with a pair of young hopes with brothers who starred in the game - Dinara Safin, sister of Marat Safin, and Michaella Krajicek, half-sister of 1996 Wimbledon winner Richard - also in the mix.

Dokic, a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2000, put in a solid effort in the second set against number 82 Bondarenka, losing finalist this year in Hyderabad and playing for the first time this spring in a clay-court main draw.

Dokic won the second set in a spirited fightback as she broke the Ukrainian three times while losing her serve once.

But a lack of match fitness showed in the third, with Dokic falling to 2-3 on a double-fault and producing two serving mistakes in succession to drop to 2-5.

Two consecutive forehand errors a game later from the listless former top five standout brought a premature end to her comeback.

============
ESTORIL OPEN (Estoril, Portugal, WTA Tier IV)
============

First round:
- Jelena Dokic lt. Alyona Bondarenko, 6-2 3-6 6-2

Jelena finally admitted she is considering what some of we
"powerless spectators" have been suggesting for some time now:
dropping down to the ITF Women's Circuit in order to play much lower-
ranked opponents.

"I would not like to go down to Challenger events, but matches-wise
and confidence-wise, it could be a good thing. I went from four in
the world to #444, so I have got to start from the beginning again.
My tennis isn't there, so I have to build it up from the beginning
like I did when I was 14."

Pros:
+ Lower-ranked opponents = better chance of victory?
+ More victories = more confidence.
+ More confidence = better chance of victories on WTA Tour.

Cons:
- Her opponents might drag Jelena down to their level.
- You still get tough opponents, even on the ITF circuit, as I've
seen when Iva Majoli, Karina HaböudovŠ and Iroda Tulyaganova
dropped back down to the ITF circuit.
- Failure to win matches even on the ITF circuit could have a
devastating effect on Jelena's confidence and desire to continue her
career.

Conclusions:
* Jelena is too close to rock-bottom to be dragged down much
further, so I believe the ITF circuit is the way to go.
* If I were Jelena, I would start at the very bottom of the ladder:
$10,000 ITF tournaments. Master those first, then move up to $25k,
$50k, $75k, then back onto the WTA Tour.
* Jelena should still play the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open,
even if she has to qualify. Grand Slams are what you play tennis
for, after all!

Anyways, apparently Jelena has decided to take about 7 weeks off, skip the grass season (her favorite surface, nice going you stupid girl) to train. Jelena never was a very good trainer and she'll come back out of shape as usual and SUCK and TANK yet again even with 7 solid weeks of training to get back to something that resembles the old Jelena. So tired of this shit nothing she does now shocks me.

I miss her at Wimbly...muah Jelena! muah!

Hingis, Dokic Enter WTA Injury Fray for 2006

By Richard Vach, Tennis-X.com Senior Writer

The news that former No. 1 Martina Hingis plans a full-on (and not the teaser from last year) return from retirement for 2006, and that troubled former No. 4-ranked Serb-Aussie Jelena Dokic will emerge from the dregs of minor-league play and return to Australia, are not so surprising once you're familiar with the back stories.

Hingis, who hung it up in 2002 after various foot injuries, found that filling her house with furniture, riding her horses, dabbling in tennis commentary and dating fellow athletes/celebrities wasn't meeting her competitive desires -- nor that ever-gnawing need to be in the spotlight.

Dokic, whose ranking plunged into the 300s, found that taking to the minor leagues (see: Andre Agassi) to revive your career doesn't quite work when you even then can't win matches, and running back to Tennis Australia for wildcard assistance was the way to go.

Both players have been among the world's elite, but both will find the 2006 WTA Tour an un-welcoming environment -- not in their reception by other players, but in being on the receiving end of other players' rocket attacks.

Hingis' guile and chess-like perception of the court kept her on top of the WTA Rankings for 209 weeks, but it was the power games of newcomers such as the Williams sisters that helped drive her out. At 16 years old she was the youngest player to reach No. 1, and now at 25 is well past "middle age" for a tennis player.

"Martina Hingis is one of the game's great champions and unique personalities," said Larry Scott, CEO of the WTA Tour. "For fans of women's tennis, Martina's return will add another level of excitement to the sport and enhance the incredible rivalries and roster of big-name stars. Her passion for the game has never wavered and we look forward to her return."

Problem is, her passion for the game has wavered.

Last February when the Swiss played her lone 2005 event at Pattaya City, she rolled to a 6-1, 2-1, 40-0 lead over Germany's Marlene Weingartner in the first round before her fitness gave in to a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 loss.

Hingis petered out in one match. Whatever fitness regime that led up to that appearance must have included a good amount of sitting on the couch watching the horses frolic out back. It was at that moment that the Swiss realized a true comeback would take a lot of hard work -- perhaps too much sprinting sweating for a 25-year-old millionaire to bother with.

"I've never had plans further than this step. Maybe I'll play some exhibitions," Hingis said after the loss. "That's my plan at the moment. At this point I have no plans to play any more tournaments."

Now the Swiss Miss says she will be back with what sounds like a full campaign, and Australian Open organizers are waiting with open arms.

"I've had contact with Martina's management, but she has not made a decision yet," said Australian Open chief executive Paul McNamee, speaking with the Herald Sun. "She is a possibility, but not a probability, to play the Open. It might be 50-50. The door is open. It would be really exciting if she was to play the Open again. We would make her as welcome as possible."

Hingis appeared in an amazing six consecutive Aussie Open finals from 1997-2002, winning her first three and dropping the last three, then retiring.

In Dokic's case, Aussie Open organizers say the Serb will need to do some cleaning up before being offered her meal ticket.

Dokic's willingness to end her three-year Aussie Open exile means she will report to the Aussie Open wildcard training camp, and must fight it out with young Aussie hopefuls to earn a wildcard spot. Which she will likely lose, and then probably be handed a spot in the main draw after all.

"Jelena is going to be at the Australian Open training camp and she will be in the playoff," McNamee said. "We won't be making any decision on wildcards for the Australian Open until after the playoffs. There will be a level playing field for everyone. We will be fair with every player."

Sure...Jelena won't get any special treatment (wink wink). In the end it would be a shocker if Dokic returned to the Aussie fold and they then left her out in the cold. You'd have to think one of the eight wildcards would fall her way.

The reasons Dokic is unlikely to navigate challenge matches in a field of Aussie scrubs to earn a wildcard are her results over the last 12 months, and more importantly her state of mind. Last year she went 3-6 in tour play before dropping down to the ITF minor league circuit where she lost first round at Italian events in Fano and Cuneo, lost in the ITF qualifying at Petange, Luxembourg, then ended the season by making it through the qualifying and losing second round at the ITF event in Martina Franca, Italy.

Not exactly the results dreams are made of. At ITF minor league tournaments. When you used to be No. 4 in the world. Yikes.

On the state-of-mind tip, the 22-year-old Dokic will be competing without the support of crazy-dad Damir, the recipient of constant furtive glances from the court as the insecure Dokic plied her trade earlier in her career.

Now the estranged Damir, after his antics and heavy-handedness with his daughter over the years, gets to hear about Jelena only through his wife.

"Jelena phoned her mother and told her she plans to travel to Melbourne in December to prepare for the Australian Open," Damir told Kurir, a Serbian newspaper. "She wants to take Australian citizenship when she is there and to play at the Australian Open as an Australian citizen...She phoned my wife from Croatia saying she was OK. I thought she had been kidnapped or something. She did not call for three months and I was about to ring the police."

How much confidence will Dokic have in 2006 after this year failing to reach even a quarterfinal in the minor leagues -- and Hingis, competing against superior firepower on two surgically-repaired feet?

"Confidence has a lot to with it," said Dokic in March at Indian Wells, speaking with Tennisreporters.net's Matt Cronin. "I'm that kind of player. Physically I have gone back to zero. Mentally I feel better. But it takes so much to come back to a good level. I've had to suffer. When you don't play, it's difficult to do it again. But for me to say I'm going to do it is a big step."

If Dokic was zero then, is it safe to assume she's less than zero heading to Australia. And when Hingis shows up with that powerpuff serve she displayed in World Team Tennis play, will that faze Maria Sharapova, the Belgians or the Williams sisters?

Whether their latest forays pan out for Hingis or Dokic (or fellow injury victims Jennifer Capriati, Monica Seles, or the handful of players that missed the WTA Championships with injuries), you've got to hand it to the WTA -- by luck or design, the women want to play, and the comebacks adds a freak-show-type element to the game that attracts even fringe fans.

Will Hingis or Dokic ever win another WTA title? Or even a match? Can the Swiss return to her bitchy best (remember when she shouted down a reporter questioning her rivalry with Anna Kournikova, saying it isn't a rivalry when only one player wins?), or Dokic to her mopey one-dimensional baseline banging that earned her five singles titles? What will they say in their post-match conferences? Will Hingis resume her delicious war of words/egos with the Williams sisters? Will her mom Melanie, who is busy running her own tennis academies, drop everything to coach her again?

You don't see this kind of excitement on the men's side, with Pete Sampras taking a Wimbledon wildcard or John McEnroe and Peter Fleming announcing they will play doubles at the US Open, or Yevgeny Kafelnikov hitting the challenger circuit to accrue some poker-entry money. Or money for greens fees, or entering eating contests, or whatever his fat ass is up to nowadays.

Dokic Goes Kournikova Serving 28 Double Faults in Loss

Posted on January 03, 2006

One resurgent hopeful's campaign was cut short while it was a good day for most of the seeds, as first round action was completed on Tuesday at the ASB Classic, a $145,000 Tier IV event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

Playing for Australia for the first time in five years, former world No.4 and wild card entrant Jelena Dokic's Auckland campaign was halted in her opening match with a 57 76(3) 61 loss to Germany's Julia Schruff. Despite spraying over 50 unforced errors (which included a whopping 28 double faults), Dokic found herself just one game away from victory while up 6-5 in the second set, but crumbled when it came to crunch time, then completely losing her way in the deciding third set.

"I am getting close to Kournikova," said Dokic jokingly about her overwhelmingly shaky serving display. "I was very nervous and I was very tight and I think that contributed to the loss today. When I was getting close to winning I just got really nervous. I think that's a lack of matches."

"After the first set it could only get better because that was not good," Schruff said. "I didn't think she would hit that many double faults. Her second serve was like her first, not a lot of spin."

So Jelena just came off a nice run at the 25K challengers event in Italy last week where she qualified and made it to the 2r in the main draw. She pulled out of this week's challenger event she was scheduled to play (which I was initially pissed about) because she got a QC into the Wimbledon quallies draw . And guess who she plays? A fellow Wimbledon semifinalist Alexandra Stevenson :help:. Both ladies have been following the same tennis path for quite some time now (just that Dokic was lucky enough to use her skills to actually DO something in the tennis world before she started to majorly suck). Stevenson topped Jeca in the Wimbledon QF way back in 1999, when both were qualifiers. If Jelena loses this match to Alex :timebomb:.

Dokic gets fit and focused

http://www.theage.com.au/news/tennis...394689331.html

Adrian Proszenko
December 2, 2007

JELENA Dokic says she wants to "reconnect" with the Australian public and return to the top echelons of the game after officially nominating for the Australian Open wildcard play-off.

"I needed some time away from the game to sort through some personal issues but now I'm back and very focused," Dokic told The Sunday Age. "I've been working very hard in training and I'm hopeful that things turn out well."

Dokic boasted a career-high ranking of No. 4 in the world in 2002, eight years after emigrating from her native Serbia with her family. A Wimbledon semi-finalist, her career has been in free fall after she changed her nationality to Yugoslav and then Serb after father Damir claimed the Australian Open draw was rigged against her.

The 24-year-old has no rankings points and an arbitrary computer ranking of 9999. She has earned almost $3.8 million in prizemoney but did little to add to that tally this season, earning $123 from a Futures Tour appearance. She believes her climb back to the top can begin with the Australian Open.

"I'd love to play in the Australian Open again," Dokic said. "… I'd like to think that by the end of 2008, I could be somewhere in the top 50."

Now based in Melbourne, Dokic has had a gruelling practice regime. She has been on court for up to four hours a day, six days a week.

Having seemingly sorted out her personal issues — she has fallen out with the controversial Damir — Dokic said she had been inspired by the stunning comebacks of Jennifer Capriati, Mary Pierce and Andre Agassi.

Jelena Dokic takes final swing

December 02, 2007 12:00am

FORMER tennis whizkid Jelena Dokic has launched another comeback bid.

Dokic was hard at work at Melbourne Park yesterday, hoping to win a wildcard into the Australian Open.

The former Wimbledon semi-finalist has seen injury and personal problems way-lay her once-glittering career.

Now ranked 9999th in the world, Dokic has entered into the wildcard round-robin tournament to be played from December 15-21 in search of a singles spot in the main draw.

Dokic has rarely been seen on the tour since she won the same qualifying tournament last year, only to lose in the first round of the Open.

Here's a video of Jelena practicing for the OPEN back in October. You can see by looking at the pics which were taken this month, that in just about 2 months Jelena has lost alot of weight. I think she for serious!

Jelena def. Erakovic 6-4, 6-1...in AO QFs!!! ! !

THE AUSTRALIAN

January 11 2008

JELENA DOKIC has described as "hell and back" the journey she has taken from the depths of depression, when she sat in her Croatian home less than a year ago unable to contemplate picking up a racquet, to her return to the professional tour.

Jelena Dokic during her match in Melbourne against Marina Erakovic from New Zealand, Thursday January 10, 2008. Picture: John Anthony
After pushing aside New Zealand's Marina Erakovic in the first round of qualifying for next week's Open, Dokic also revealed the extent of her physical transformation since first reporting for work at Melbourne Park less than three months ago.

When Dokic began training in October, having not set foot on a practice court for the previous seven months or played a WTA event for the previous two years, her weight had ballooned to 83kg, leaving her too embarrassed to shed her tracksuit pants.

When she walked off the court yesterday afternoon, having moved well throughout her straight-sets win over Erakovic despite temperatures topping 40C, she revealed her weight was down to 67kg; the result of an intense, disciplined regime of training, conditioning and diet.

"I think it is about 16kg now that I have lost - I have obviously a couple more to go," she said. "I started in the middle of October exactly, so it hasn't even been a full three months yet and I am very proud of my progress. If you told me a month ago that I would do as well as I did in Hobart and even win the first match here, I would have been pretty happy.

"Even mentally it is a different story. I have been very positive throughout the whole thing. I have tried to be a bit of a perfectionist and to get everything in order because that is what I need to do.

"I am really starting from scratch and there is no easy way to go through that. I have really worked hard on everything and really sacrificed a lot the last three months."

At 24, Dokic still has plenty of work to do if she is to regain the fitness and form that took her to the semi-finals of Wimbledon and, briefly, No4 in the world. She believes her ideal playing weight is 62kg.

More importantly, she needs her ranking to improve to the point where she can avoid the cut-throat qualifying draws, which she has had to negotiate in Hobart and Melbourne. Given the extent of the personal and professional crisis she has emerged from, Dokic believes the worst of it - and the worst years of her life - are behind her.

While she would not detail the issues she has spent two years confronting, she gave a rare insight into the dysfunctional private life of a troubled star.

"It is not like I just went on a holiday and wasn't here for two years," she said. "I had a lot of issues I had to sort through and, mentally, I had to just be able to play and be able to enjoy tennis.

"That is the thing I have missed the most and that is the thing that has suffered the most. I have really missed it, but I had to wait for the right frame of mind to play again.

"The kind of situation I was in the last two years, I am happy to be sitting here right now.

"It has been a long road. It has been a lot of hard work and a lot of nights that I haven't slept through. This is just something that needed to happen. I thought I would never pick up a racquet again."

Having rediscovered her joy for the sport, Dokic is happier now than perhaps any time since 1999, when she was a Sydney schoolgirl who stunned the tennis world by beating defending champion Martina Hingis in the first round at Wimbledon.

Her story since has become one of the most bizarre in world sport - shaped by conspiracy theories against the WTA, switching nationality from Australia to Serbia and back to Australia again, and culminating in absurd claims from her father Damir that she had been abducted by her boyfriend.

But after surviving the public disintegration of the relationship with her father, her painful decline through the tennis ranks and her self-imposed exile from the women's Tour, Dokic can again see tennis for what it used to be; a game she loves playing.

"I feel like, honestly, I have been through hell and back so this is just fun for me right now," she said. "If I win I am really happy, but if I lose, at the end of the day, it is just a tennis match.

"I haven't had a great life and a great couple of years so I am really just enjoying this. This is the thing that I will always love, no matter what happens in my life off the court. That is all I want to do right now."
