I live in Holland where I was born, but my origin is morroccan.
I also hope he'll be back in the top 30. He has been plagued by injuries last season, but I got to see some nice things from Younes last year.
Have heard some news perhaps about Karim Alami? He went down the rankings last year. He's ranked around 280, but haven't heard anything about any unjuries.
Gues he'll get a wildcard for the Qatar open like last year.

Usually in Mexico the boxers, wrestlers, and footballers are the most popular athletes (specially the boxers, Mexico have a great tradition on that sport) But Right Now, without doubts the main "hero" is "Ana Gabriela Guevara"
she is a runner of 400 meters. have won the golden league, the grand prix, the world championship...well, being brief: she won whole the competitions, all!

Here is a picture of Ana, she is the one wearing glasses

I love it since I was a kid. My mother told me that when I was 3 years old (the times of Carlos Reutemann, Nelson Piquet, young Prost, Patrese, Andretti, etc) I used to sit next the TV set and wath the races.

I remember when I was 5 years old I used to make my own championships with my toy cars. My favorite (when Reutemann retired) was Jaques Laffite.

Then:
Elio de Angelis
Ayrton Senna (when he was in Tolemann and nobody know him)
Thyerry Boutsen
Jean Alesi
Jos Verstappen
David Coulthard
Olivier Panis

(sorry, this is not the correct thread, I´ll start a Formula Uno thread)

I see your point Wojtek but I think that Paula has is becoming more successful/recognised in her own right now for finally acheiving her main goals. I think that she has become more popular than Henman/Owen she got 6 times more votes than Beckham to win BBC sports personality of the year. But if he was born in Germany, then he is German, no matter if he is "half this or half that".
I can see that you are from Holland, well many of the dutch football players were born in South America (Suriname) or in the Caribbean (Nederland Antillen), and they are not "pure dutches".
If Michael has Algerian blood and he denies it, is shameful, but he is 100% German, or we are going to start to divide the mankind like in the old times again?

Just a thought from somebody who lives in a country where the 90% of the population is "half this or half that" (and proud about it) :)

maratski
12-16-2002, 09:20 PM
Our football players aren't ashamed to say where they're from, but Michael is. I think he shouldn't.
I myself am not 100% dutch, even if I'm born here. I'm from morroccan origin and will never deny that. That's why I think other people should do the same.

Jorge
12-16-2002, 09:33 PM

Just thought I'd add the fact that Britain has Lenox Lewis who's been doing fairly well for himself! Aslo, there's Richard Burns (England's first ever World Rally Champion), Jonathan Edwards (world record holder and winner of everything going in the world of triple jump), Colin Jackson (world record holder in the 110m hurdles - also Britains most capped athlete ever), Stephen Hendry (7 times snooker world champion), Tanni Grey-Thompson (multiple marathon winner, Olympic champion etc.), Michael Vaughn (England batsman/spin bowler who was made man of the ashes series despite England's 4-1 loss) and many more.

I haven't mentioned those previously mentioned or the huge number of past heroes.

Edmund Hillary is probably the greatest here-he was the first man to climb mount everest and he's an expeditionist.
There are many rugby "hero's" as well .
another of the greats is sir peter blake who was killed by river pirates-he's one of the worlds best sailors.

our rugby heros arnt really over-rated here cause its really only the rugby enthusiasts who care/know about them so otherwise not much attention is paid to them by the general public.....i like rugby union cause its the only type of rugby i really like :p

yeah same over here if you dont know about rugby you dont know anything about them whereas footballers are like more pushed into the media and you really do know about them even if you dont want to know.I live in a rugby league town thats why ;)

john van loen was our ultimate hero. it was only sad that he was almost blind so he couldn't see the goal (it's the truth, no joke)

yes, arnaud tournand is well known but he is not really a star in France.

We talk about him only for the JO (Olympic Games) just like Florian Rousseau :)

without any doubt janica kostelić
she´s a godess in our country
5 times world champion, 4 olympic medals, 2 overall world cups, 2 slalom world cups
and she´s only 24
a living legend
and the results are just the half of the reason for her status here
she´s simple, brave and tough person who is insipration for all of us
i am just proud that she was born in zagreb, my home town, and also i feel privileged that i was around to be witness to this amazing story that janica, and all the family kostelić is

i would put in that category dražen petrović who has sadly tragically died in car accident in 93´
but he´s is a legend who will never be forgoten
i hope that we will have his museum finished here in zagreb this year
