YAY!!! I am looking forward to it even though none of my favourites will be playing at there.. but the atmosphere is excellent!!!

What day/s will you be going, esther?

12-05-2002, 05:49 AM
aww i dunno if i'm going!! (i asked u in the general msgs forum) coz i dont think anyone will go with me!!!!! if i do go, which at this stage is very unlikely...it would have to be the first day coz i'd have to buy the tickets soon and that'd be the only day i'd know seb's playing. do they practise the day before there? are we allowed in?

12-05-2002, 09:00 PM
As I said in the General forum, I'll go to the final day...
Esther, from my experience, I never had a chance to see the player practising.... I'm not sure, maybe if u have a really good ticket, you might have a chance....

KFS, what day r u going???

12-05-2002, 09:49 PM
Go Seb and Mark! :)

12-05-2002, 10:57 PM
I'll be going on Friday 10 Jan 2002!!

I am actually thinking to go on the 1st day as well since I have the week off work....

12-06-2002, 02:31 AM

12-10-2002, 04:34 PM

12-15-2002, 02:46 AM
Wonder when will they going to announce the player for the last spot?

12-15-2002, 08:39 AM
well they're waiting for SAMPRAS and they said he'll decide in the next two weeks right...so probably the DAY BEFORE or somethign stupid like that :S

awww i wanted to see Haas!

12-23-2002, 10:03 AM
Hope they replace Haas with Kiefer :)

12-23-2002, 09:40 PM
they have to find 2 players since Haas and Sampras are not playing...

12-23-2002, 09:51 PM
kiefer LMAO

Enqvist is normally a fav of the organisers but it will have to be a player who hasn't committed to playing an ATP event that week.

12-24-2002, 03:27 AM
i feel so sorry for the people trying to organise these events. I just hope no more people are going to announce they aren't playing before ao...

12-24-2002, 06:49 AM
The organizers may have to invite the local players to fill in the gap now since the time is running very short for the event to start......

12-25-2002, 11:32 AM

12-29-2002, 07:41 AM
they got another GAP to fill too

Henman withdrew too not that it bothers me in the slightest ;)

now they got to look for players not committed to any tourns next week.

01-01-2003, 05:43 AM
i hope gasquet gets to play! it'd be a great opportunity for him

01-01-2003, 12:00 PM
Andrei Pavel will play...
2 spots remaining, hopefully they will invite Yevgeny & Richard (Gasquet or Krajicek :))

01-02-2003, 07:07 AM
neone know when they'll be announced? the last 2 spots?? there is only 5 days left...:)

01-02-2003, 08:38 AM

01-03-2003, 12:56 AM

oh yeah i forgot that johanssohn is uncertain

01-04-2003, 04:27 PM
Johansson withdraws from AusOpen... so that means there are two spots remain to be announced.....

I feel sorry for the organizers..... Sampras, Henman, Haas and now Johansson!!! The big names just keep going away.....

01-05-2003, 01:55 AM
When are they going to announce the 2 last players...
3 more days..... Hope they can find a good one.

01-05-2003, 04:26 AM
i know!! Colin stubs would be so unbelieveably stressed...theres several players that aren't playign this week right like what about hewitt?? Maybe they could ask Escude as well?

01-05-2003, 04:44 AM
hey u know how they usually do the press conference on the tuesday or before the event with all the 8 players? do they still do that?...if they do, is there ever a transcript of it?

El Aynoui joins Comm Bank field

Younas El Aynoui replaces the injured Thomas Johansson in the field for this week's Commonwealth Bank International here at Kooyong.

With injuries striking several of the stars including Tommy Haas and Tim Henman, the event is looking to El Aynoui, Andre Pavel and French junior star, Richard Gasquet, who have joined the field for their warm up to the Australian Open.

Gasquet, an exciting prospect in world tennis and still at the tender age of 16, adds a touch of excitement to the field with the wraps being placed on his future as a star of the sport.

Andre Pavel and El Aynoui are solid performers on the tour and have come off extremely consistent years for both being ranked 26th and 22nd respectively.

With one spot yet to be named, the field is taking shape and the draw for Wednesday's play takes place on Tuesday before all of the players take the court on the first days play.

Wednesday's play kicks off at 11.00am and tickets are available through ticketmaster7 on 136 100 or at the gate or for more information go to the tournament website Commonwealth Bank International.[http://www.commbankinternational.com/]

i'm so confused how kooyong works--theres 4 matches on wednesday, 3 on thursday and 3 on friday and 2 on saturday right...but if each player has 3 guarenteed matches then that doesn't work--and isn't saturday the day of the final?? so why are there 2 matches??

kfh_9118- thanks...it sux that the draw for thursday and friday doesnt come out until the day before around 4:30 coz if i knew who's playing then now, i could buy my tickets now so...do u reckon if i had to buy the tickets at the gate, the seats would be really crap?? i just hope if i do get 'bad' seats they aren't that bad neway...

marilyn- oh ok...the commbankinternational.com site hasn't been updated at all

Esther, here is how the schedule of matches work:

Day 1 (Wednesday): All players will play, so there are 4 matches.

Day 2 (Thursday): 2 matches between the losing players will be played and 1 match between the winner from previous day. Eg: from the draw, let's say

Alex Corretja vs Mark Philippoussis (Alex wins :))

Andre Agassi vs Thomas Enqvist (Andre wins :))

Richard Gasquet vs Younes El Aynoui (Richard wins :))

Andre Pavel vs Sebastien Grosjean (Andrei wins :))

then the second day win will feature Mark vs Thomas, Younes vs Sebastien, and one match either Alex vs Andre or Richard vs Andrei.

Day 3 (Friday): 1 match from the winner of day 1 and not being played in day 2. Then 2 matches between the losers and winners from previous day. Eg. if Mark vs Thomas (mark wins), and Younes vs Sebastien (Sebastien wins), then day 3 will play Mark vs Sebastien (say Sebastien wins) and Thomas vs Younes (say Thomas wins). Then from this third day we'll find rank 5-8 players, ie: (in order) Sebastien, Mark, Thomas, and Younes as the last player.

Final day: is the day to decide the No 1-4 players. In my example, say Andre wins against Alex and Andrei against Richard, then Alex will play Richard to decide the third place, and Andre vs Andrei in the final to decide the winner.

So if you want to see Sebastien plays, I suggest you to go in the first day (when all players play). If you can't, see how the results go, if Sebastien win in the first day, then he will absolutely play in the final day, and one day between day 2 or 3. If he loses, then he will absolutely play in both Thursday and Friday.

This was how it worked last year, not sure if they change it this year, but it's unlikely I think :)
Hope you understand what I'm talking about :p

01-07-2003, 08:43 AM
omg thank you so much!!! how did you know that?!!!
they should so explain that on the site coz i was thinking it was just normal round robin...why is it so COMPLICATED?!

but now i'm even more stressed coz i wanna go either thursday or friday and i wont know until the draw comes out coz what if seb wins, i still wont know if he's playing thursday or friday...

01-07-2003, 10:44 AM
glad thomas will get some more matches in :) :)

he need to get back going again :)

01-07-2003, 12:32 PM

01-08-2003, 08:11 AM
OMG, all my favourites won :bounce: :bounce:

That means I will see them on final day on Saturday :) So happy :D Can't wait to see how Richard plays, this will be my first time... Andre :) Mark :) (though I like Alex as well), and Sebastien :) (hope Xavier's injury is not serious)

Esther, so when will you go to Kooyong? where did you find the schedule for tomorrow?? I don't think Sebastien will play Corretja tomorrow, unless it's just for an exhibition to replace Xavier, that's mean Sebastien will play all the 4 days

Hope Agassi or Mark can win this title :bounce: :bounce:

01-08-2003, 09:03 AM
kfh_9118 - hehe i'm glad all ur favourites won!! no i was wrong, but ive edited it^^^...malisse is being replaced by arazi.

yeah me too, i really hope malisse will play AO. I rang up to find out tomorrows schedule...lol i rang up like 3 times in one hour or something for the scores and to see if they knew who was playing tomorrow and i got the same lady and it was really embarrassing. The people there dont know what they're doing tho...one said on tuesday when i was really confused that it was a KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENT...which is totally wrong and then that other woman said the second time i called up that corretja would play the WINNER of malisse and grosjean but then the third time i called up she said it was the LOSER which was malisse, whos getting replaced by arazi. so yeah thats why i thought grosjean but your explanation was 100% right!! wednesday is like to work out the 'winners' and 'losers' and they play amounst themselves. Pretty smart format...altho its so confusing!!

I'm going on FRIDAY!! i'm soooo excited but i haven't bought the tickets yet so i'm a bit scared...but i hope to get the tomorrow but i dont think its gonna be TOO full...fingers crossed..!! Neway on Friday, Mark is playing SEB!@! thats gonna be the BEST match!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You still goign on saturday?

01-08-2003, 10:55 AM
Glad you can finally decide what day to go :) I knew the format because I had been there twice before (in 1999 and 2001) and the format didn't change. So I thought I should be the same again this time. That's why today's results are very important to me because I will only see the winner of today matches to play in the final day (on Saturday). And I'm so glad to find out Andre, Richard, Mark and Sebastien won today :bounce: :bounce:

Yeah, I'm still going on Saturday, I had bought the ticket since September (I think), and can't wait till the day. I am hardly concentrating today at work because my mind was totally at Kooyong :p I even wished that I don't have a job so I can go the event everyday just like the previous years. But of course no income for me :) Tomorrow after work, I'm going to Melbourne Park to see some qualifying match. I finished at 5pm, and there should be some matches on play. There are 6 matches in 1 court, so at least they must finish around 6pm. Hopefully I will be able to watch some good players warm up as well :)

Just wondering, do we have any qualifying matches on Sunday??? Hope so. I am thinking of going to MP on Saturday morning and then to Kooyong by 2pm.

Next tuesday night, I will watch the night session of AO, and maybe I'll ask for 1 day off either Wednesday or Thursday, depend on who're playing and the weather. I don't want to go there when it's too hot :)

Are you going to AO, esther??

01-08-2003, 10:56 AM
Oh yeah, good luck to you tomorrow, hope you'll get a good seat. I'm pretty sure you will. It's not really a tournament that everyone wants to go, since it's too close to AO. People will choose to go to AO instead :)

Xavier felt pain in the calf (don't know if that's the right word?!). He retired because he didn't want to take any risk so close to the AO! It didn't sound too serious, so he should be ok soon! :)

Scud poised for comeback

Four knee operations and counting, and yet Mark Philippoussis is back yet again. On Wednesday, the Melbourne native disposed of the world's No.19 player, Alex Corretja, in the Kooyong Classic, 5-7 6-4 7-6 (7-5). Suddenly, the return of the Scud seems a possibility.

Written off for good by many, the big Victorian may not win next week’s Australian Open, but the 26-year old Melbourne native could worry more than one opponent in his own backyard. He says his main ambition is to get as many matches as possible under his belt: matches, tournaments, Davis Cup, … Did someone say Davis Cup? Australia happens to face Britain next month and with proven experience that includes Australia’s win in 1999, Scud now hopes to secure his place.

While his body passed its latest test, last week a second-round loss to Rainer Schuettler in Madras curtailed the Australian's first tournament since he hyper-extended his suspect left knee at the US Open in August.

"Last week was my first tournament since the US, so it's definitely tough. I feel like every time I get injured it gets a little tougher mentally coming back," Philippoussis said Wednesday at the Kooyong. "Physically I'm still obviously getting stronger, nowhere near as strong as I would like to be, but as much as you train there is no such thing as match toughness."

With four operations since 1999 which now require regular jabs of synthetic cartilage, Philippoussis says nothing can phase him.

"I just go out and play like there's nothing wrong. I don't think there's something wrong with my knee, I'm fine now," he insisted.

At 26, the lost years cannot be recovered. But he can make the most of those that are left and has pledged to play February's Davis Cup tie against Britain in his first home appearance since the 1997 quarter-final against the Czech Republic in Adelaide.

For now though, the second singles spot behind Lleyton Hewitt is taken.

True, Wayne Arthurs has torn his calf, but it appears that he will have recovered in time. Arthurs is almost certain to play doubles at Melbourne Park next week and is rated a 75 per cent chance to play singles, for which he will request a Tuesday start.

Arthurs plans to hit his first points in practice this weekend before making a decision on his fitness. "There's going to be one or two days in it, whether he makes it or not, but he's getting better every day," coach Brent Larkham said Wednesday.

"He's feeling great, his recovery is going really well, better than could be expected. He's pretty positive about trying to play doubles at least, and he'll 100 per cent be right for Davis Cup.”

But a sure thing could quicly turn into a quandary for Davis Cup captain John Newcombe should Melbourne Park next week bear witness to the real return of the Scud.

Come on Thomas!!!
Let's see if you can win your first f***ing match this year

Come on!!! We trust in you

He might be the first one to play in two events the same week

01-09-2003, 01:53 AM
kfh_9118- *sigh* its funny that you should say that most people want to go to AO instead...after ALL this worrying about the tickets, who's gonna be playign etc etc i've decided to go to Aussie Open first day instead of Kooyong. I wasn't allowed to go to both and my mum said i could only go to ONE and not both coz she's paranoid about it being too hot and stuff--sounds pathetic but i'm really disapointed. i was really close to choosing kooyong but i had promised my friend since like last year that i'd go with her to AO so i decided i would rather go there. Oh yeah i'm also going overseas from the 14th-23rd which REALLLLLLY sux coz i'm missing basically the whole AO except for the finals!!! *cries* but i know theres always next year...i cannot see AO being pushed back to march--theres just too many reasons why it shouldn't be.

Oh i have no idea whether theres qualies on Sunday...i would think there would be tho. Cool you might see some people practising! I hope you have a great time on Saturday!! i'm sure you will!! Well wednesday and thursday i think will be the same temp. as monday so around 30-35 degrees? Hehe its great that you can still organise going to all this tennis even though ure working. Tell me how Saturday goes and maybe i coudl go next year! -oh btw which seats did you get? in which section?

experimentee- Malisse seemed to have pain in his arm all through the second set- and maybe during the first as well- and between points kept like massaging his arm and it looked like it was really bothering him, although you probably wouldn't be able to tell coz he was playing as well as Seb :S Suddenly at the end of the second set he must have felt MORE pain in his calf coz in the last game of the second set and the first game of the third set he was actually limping around...So its weird that he hasn't said nething about his arm...but HOPEFULLY he'll be about to play aussie open

lol @ lee--yes he should.

01-09-2003, 06:28 AM

Thursday saw some fantastic tennis with Thomas Enqvist up against Younes El Aynoui first up on centre court.

Having lost to the young Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, on Wednesday, El Aynoui was keen to gain some form going into the Australian Open next week and managed to get past his Swedish opponent in straight sets 6/4 6/4.

Next on court was the match up most fans had come to see and was it to be a changing of the guard so to speak with Andre Agassi playing Richard Gasquet for a spot in Saturday's final.

Agassi started in sensational form and looked set to blow his younger opponent away before Gasquet seemed to get over his nerves and come back into the match but the first set was already gone.

The second set was tight but Agassi's serve let him down and the young French prodigy took advantage of this and stole the second set 7/5.

Cool heads prevailed in the third with Agassi again taking command and winning his way through to final in three sets of breathtaking shotmaking from both players.

"I was anxious to see what his game was like and he has a lot of weapons and a lot of things he can count on out there," said Agassi after the match.

About Gasquet's future Andre said "Whom am I to say about somebody's future, that all depends on their competitiveness and desire but I think he has a lot of game and pointed in the right direction can accomplish some really good things."

In the last match of the day Alex Corretja took on Hicham Arazi, a last minute replacement for the injured Xavier Matisse, and it was a fine display of gritty tennis from both players.

In the end Corretja's class came through in a 6/3 6/4 win.

Friday's Schedule of Play

11.00am - Centre Court

Mark Philippoussis vs Sebastien Grosjean

Thomas Enqvist vs Hicham Arazi

Younes El Aynoui vs Alex Corretja

Thomas :(
He used to make good matches there

At least, he doesn't have to face one of the first seeds... He can defeat Gaudio

Just came back from Kooyong :bounce: It's a nice day and good matches, except the heat, just too hot :(

Andre vs Sebastien... Both played good tennis, but Andre just too good for Sebastien... Sebastien served extremely well today, lots of aces... He had a good chance in the second set when he was up 3-1, but then Agassi suddenly put up her game to win the next 5 games in a row   Well done, Agassi, and I'm happy he won :) He has a good chance to win the AO IMO :)

Richard vs Mark... I'm really impressed with Richard's game... He doesn't have a big serve or shots, but he's smart and I enjoyed his game. As for Mark, I'm disappointed with the way he played today... no motivation and too many UEs... He only relied on his big serves (and yes, he shot a lot of aces), but still can't win the match. Richard's serve was not broken throughout the matches :) Overall, Richard played well today, and now I know why he can win a set from Andre....

Can't wait to see how far Richard and Andre will go in the AO :)

just saw some games of 2nd set Mark vs. Richard. very disappointed Mark made too many ues. As for Richard, he is French Style player like Seb and Arnaud. He doesn't have powerful serve yet but already has good serve and he is only 16, I'm sure he will improve in the future.

I'm going again on Wednesday and Thursday... Monday and Tuesday are just too hot for me ;)

01-12-2003, 03:05 AM
hehe thanks...u know how they have the new heat policy of if it's 35 degrees or over they stop play?? i hope that doesnt happen tomorrow!!! Oh ok cool--who are u planning to see on wednesday and thursday?

01-12-2003, 09:26 AM
Oh, actually I'll go for Night 2 session as well... Hope they have a good schedule :)

I can't tell now, who I'm going to see on Wednesday and Thursday, it depends on who win tomorrow and Tuesday, but I'll focus more on Asian players, and Russian :) Daniela or Anna K will be good ;)

01-13-2003, 09:32 AM
ugh the only reason i'm glad anna K played today was coz all the people flocked there so there was less people in Seb's match :)

well i bet you'll have a great day on wednesday and thursday!
have fun!
