Andre is serving very well right now. and he's moving fine. right now he's looking like the better player despite the scoreline. Paul's backhand is insecure - and that is what will cost him the match if he loses. but yes PHM is dictating a lot of the points.

Agassi is old, banged-up and not that strong psychologically anymore. Therefore, I don't see how people can be so comfortable in "guaranteeing" a straight-set wins for him against Top 50 opponents. Sure, the match up favors him, but nothing will come easy.

For me, it's literally one win at a time. With Baldy, he can play well one day and then get blown off the court by friggin' Melzner the next.....

I don't see Agassi having a problem with Clement, that's why I said he'd win in straight sets.

Melzer has a game that can trouble Agassi, when it fires whereas Clement doesn't have that.

Yes, but with Roger who is in the prime of his career you "know" that he has most matches won before they even start - even when he doesn't play near his best. His opponents crumble psychological.

With Agassi, who like I said, is

-old
-nursing multiple injuries
-inconsistent psychologically

it's not the same. Any match, including against Clement, could be an embarassing 1-6, 0-6 loss for him because when your skills go, they go FAST. Any match can be his last when his body says "enough" - last French Open, last week in Indiana Wells were just "warnings".

So in that spirit, I am able to savor even his early round wins (while still being critical when he plays average or worse tennis) in smaller tournaments. I assume nothing about tomorrow, his next opponent, etc. There is just today.

GeorgeWHitler, one thing is to lose; another is to get made look like a child. Melzner is simply not that good. Just admit that Agassi is no longer "Agassi" and root against him as though he was just another player you dislike - as opposed to the "Fifth Slam" Sensation that media feebly tries to paint him as.

Mathieu: i think he can. he's been playing nice ball lately. i'm glad the Tennis Channel is bringing this live :wavey:

I think 'insert current opponent' can beat Agassi. Agassi is now, or actually has been for a couple of years, at that stage of his career (like Sampras, McEnroe, Becker, etc. before him) where he could lose almost any match if he's not giving everything physically and mentally. He's 35, he's won everything, how much can he really care about winning his umpteenth Nasdaq? Unfortunately for Agassi, unlike some of the players mentioned above, his game has evolved to where he has to work quite hard now for every victory. Thus, the desire factor is even more important.

But having said that, like the players mentioned above, he still has the mind and game of a champion, and is capable of beating almost anyone on a given day. I think he's on memory lane right now, and is trying to enjoy his last full year on tour. You gotta think he wants to go out like Sampras, and will make a monumental effort to pull out one more US open. I, for one, would love to see it, taking out Federer in the final :)

I, for one, would love to see it, taking out Federer in the final :)

If he's to take down Fed, it would be in the 4th round or QF where Fed historically rarely shows brilliant (read: unbeatable) form, usually saving it for for SF and F.

Also, Andre need to play in 2006 and retire at 2007 Aussie Open. Both Andre and Gil Reyes don't rule that possibility...injury permitting, of course.

I am all for Andre skipping the clay season, though after injury-plagued 1st round exit last year, I think Andre wants a better Paris farewell.

Dent in his current form is going to be very dangerous. Andre knows how to handle him --- but if Dent can get a good first serve percentage, consistently force Andre into weak defensive replies, and keep his approach shots low and perfectly placed like he has been lately, I think he can win.

I agree. Like you say, Dent can be dangerous, just remember his US Open match from 2003, I believe. There was Agassi pretty much in trouble, 1-2 sets down (?) and lucked out because Dent got injured and had to retire. I think Agassi WOULD have had a damn hard affair this night. Agassi struggled to find good ways and good angles to pass Dent at the net and he was really much annoyed by all those wild net attacks.

Anyway, I'm pulling for Andre in this match and I hope he wins it...

Kiefer a poor man's Agassi? hmm...I would say his strokes are more like Hewitts although he tries to be like Agassi with Hewitt strokes..lol..

I would say a better comparison is that Haas is a poor man's Federer.

Holidays and Houston go together. It didn't win joint best IS event for the standard of play.

Kiefer well that's true and yes the Haas/Federer analogy is right on.

Why are the betting odds favoring Agassi so much over Dent?

I remember Dent had Andre on the ropes at USO 2003 before he had to retire from one of his infamous injuries. Isn't this court similar to the one at USO?

If Dent comes out all guns firing again I really don't think Andre will steamroll over him. He'll be in another dogfight.

The only player that's gonna beat Andre 100% is Federer, other players like Safin (playing good), Roddick, Ljubicic, Hewitt could also beat Andre.

The thing is that Andre is starting to lose to nobodys, I guess he is getting old

Fumus, you'd know isn't Miami much slower than the centre court of the US Open? From what I have been told the courts at the US Open vary so much in speed.

It can't be that quick if Ferrer is in the semis.

I give it to Andre in straight sets maybe a tb in the first and an early back breaking break of serve in the second.

But Dent is a player to bet on when he is the underdog :)

He's won sets off Agassi twice, at Wimbledon and the US Open. Unfortunately, he didn't complete either match, and if he's to win here then he can't afford to blow the chances he did at the AO this year. With virtually any other big server, when they're up a break you can practically guarantee them the set, but with Dent? No. Hopefully the improvements he has made with his serving consistency will allow him to actually hold a lead and win at last.

Yup, I agree very much with you two MrOschie and tennis4you, Agassi can surely beat Federer on this court, it really suits the double A's game. Its fast enough for his groundies to fly by and not too fast that an excellent server like Federer would just pass all day by his return game. Now I sure hope he doesnt, though I love and adore agassis ground game, those bullet backhands and the precision on his strokes are just mesmerizing. He's got such impecable timing, too bad these two have to meet so often, but thats the game an all time great versus one in the making. May the best man win tomorrow, Agassi sure has owned the Nasdaq open for some time now, maybe its time for Federer so savor what it feels to win here too.
