Good thing Hewitt isn't Agassi's little brother, or else the crowd would boo him in his next match.

This is sad. I've never had a torn tendon, so I don't know how bad it is. He might have just pulled out to be ready for Miami.

Terrible news. Agassi will probably be out until at least the French (my speculation). A torn tendon just doesn't heal quickly by itself. I was really looking forward to this match.

This is so sad, I was eagerly anticipating his match against Hewitt!

Hope he gets some rest and is ready for Miami!!

Hope Lleyton doesn't get booed too badly!

Get better soon andre!!

They were discussing the possibility. Then logic would dictate that they would put the fed v. canas semi in the midnight timeslot.....but this is ESPN after, so you can't count on logic having any part in their decision:rolleyes:

What a shame, this was one of the better match-ups of the tournament. Hewitt has really cruised into the semis and will probably get another walk over in the semis against Roddick. So another Federer-Hewitt final coming up. Agassi was the last guy who could prevent that, but sadly it wasn't to be.

Agassi just spoke and said he doesn't know what the problem with the toe is yet. He woke up in the middle of the night and it was swollen to twice its size and a little discolored. He is on his way to get an MRI and an Xray.

I don't really see how Hewitt could be booed for Andre pulling out??? :p :rolleyes:The booing is a reference to several years ago and the Williams sisters. They were scheduled to play each other and literally minutes before they were to take the court Venus pulled out with an "injury". When Serena showed up to play the next round she was booed very loudly by the crowd. That is why the Williams have never played at Indian Wells again.

OMG  That can't be pretty. I hope he heals it quickly and good.

It's really a shame, I was so expecting this match... I hope they're showing Davenport/Sharapova earlier as well as Roddick/Moya. But Federer and Cañas to play today just doesn't make sense.

Here is the article from the tourny website:

Andre Agassi has been forced to withdraw from the Pacific Life Open because he has injured his left big toe. Agassi said he has no explanation as to how it happened or what the problem really is. He said he was in pain last night while sleeping and tried to ignore it and get his rest but when he woke up in the morning the toe was double the size and very painful. His movement was restricted.

Agassi will have an MRI done to determine what the problem is. He was due to play Lleyton Hewitt in the quarterfinals. It would have been their ninth match with their head-to-head standing at 4-4. Hewitt receives a walkover into the semis.

Agassi announced his decision to withdraw to fans on center court, who gave the 2001 champion a standing ovation. Agassi had never before given a walkover to an opponent.

"I thought it was possibly an ingrown nail, something I was not trying to wake up to assess it, I was trying to get my rest," said Agassi. "Woke up this morning, it was blown up like a balloon. I can't bend it or move it.
So it's quite painful when I maneuver it manually. It's impossible for me to do anything. It's very disappointing.

"I'm going to go see if it's possibly a tendon that connects around that joint area or just a capsule of the joint. But, you know, all they can say is that that kind of quick inflammation and swelling is a result of your body trying to protect something pretty serious."

Strangely Agassi and Weir (skating) both have "big toe problems" this week. Must be a big toe flu going around.

A bizarre injury, but Andre did seem to be limping when he went out to address the crowd. Kudos to him for doing that, by the way... It's disappointing considering the form he was in.

Maybe he can make up for it by winning Miami a 7th time. ;)

Well if he does not make it to the NASDAQ, then Federer is in with a chance. I have my tickets, but with no Todd or Andre it will not be the same tournament for me.
Anyone know if Todd Martin is coaching anyone yet?

Turns out it was the first time he ever had to pull out of a scheduled match. Not a good sign but all the same it hasn't sounded like it could be somethng as serious as a torn tendon. I hope Andre heals quickly. He had been playing awesome tennis.

You, obviously, have never had a serious problem with a big toe. It hurts like a mother and makes it impossible to move normally.

People who saw it said it looked really bad.

Andre, unlike Venus, gave the tournament plenty of notice so the women were able to warm up and their match could be moved up.

Martin is coachin Fish. Has been since the beginning of the year.

So much for Todd retiring so he could spend more time with his family. ;)
