AUSTRIA'S NO. 1 RANKED PLAYER ENTERS CAMPBELL'S HALL OF FAME TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

NEWPORT, RI - The International Tennis Hall of Fame announced today that Jurgen Melzer of Austria has entered the 2005 Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. The Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, played for the Van Alen Cup, is scheduled for July 4-10 on the legendary grass courts of the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island.

Melzer is currently at No. 29 on the 2005 INDESIT ATP Race and is Austria's No. 1 ranked player. Already this year, he has reached the semifinal at San Jose (defeating Andre Agassi in the quarterfinal), the quarterfinal at Adelaide and the third round of the Australian Open.

The left-handed Melzer finished the 2004 season with his first year-end Top 50 ranking (No. 40), improving his year-end ranking for the sixth consecutive year. He reached the semifinals at St. Poelten and the quarterfinals at Houston, Hamburg, Newport, Toronto, Long Island and Lyon. Melzer also reached his career best Grand Slam results by advancing to the third round at both the Australian Open and US Open.

Turning pro in 1999, the 2003 tennis season was Melzer's breakthrough year advancing to his first career final and finishing in the Top 100 (No. 81). He reached the singles final in Newport and the semifinal at Houston.

Melzer, at age 23, is making his fourth appearance in Newport (2002 No. 8 seed, first round; 2003 No. 8 seed, finalist; 2004 No. 3 seed, quarterfinalist). In 2003 on the final day of the tournament, Melzer won the admiration of the Newport fans as he played three consecutive matches that day: the singles championship final versus Robby Ginepri; the doubles semifinal, and the doubles championship final. In total he played well over 6 hours of championship tennis, including nine sets and three tiebreakers.

Also scheduled to play:
James Blake
Robby Ginepri
Vince Spadea

 For Newport, this is a good catch ;) Jürgen should think about playing Rosmalen and not just say NO :(

Totally agree!
When I asked him about Rosmalen he took me by surprise... I said "What?" and within half a second he said no. What did you dutch people do to him?! :scared: ;)

Next year I will ask him again. He's missing out on a quality fan by not going  I mean, look how many Chiudinelli fans you've recruited! Jurgen :(

Deboogle!.

They should give the last wildcard to Richard Gasquet, he'd have a good chance of winning this tourney. Then maybe I'd actually get to see him play on grass on TV.

If Scud wants to get back to the top 100 he could do a lot worse than take a WC for here.
