Agassi, Young, and most likely James Blake, will get the three wildcards, according to today's Houston Chronicle.

Interesting - more claycourters than last year are playing.

We'll see how it turns out this year now that its back to being the week after Monte Carlo instead of the week before.

Massu didn't want to rough it in Barcelona and as for Puerta well he was nowhere at the start of the season and has come through, but still a weak field.

Yea, cuz he's obviously the ONLY one on the entry list who's gonna do that :wavey:

Curious GWH about your post. Since I am a big Massu fan ( and yes before the Olympics ;) ) I was sort of thinking that this might be his first tournie back after his injury. And Texas is a lot closer to Chile than Spain. I know he is entered in a couple of tournies before but not sure if he will be ready to return. And you scared me with your intuition- you said he wouldn't play IW and you ended up being right. Hope you don't have a crystal ball or anything :)

No, Tommy Haas will also do that.

In fact Haas is entered in River Oaks, April 4-10;
Monte Carlo, April 11-17;
U.S. Men's Clay Courts, April 18-24.

Well, I can only speak for myself - I was just sarcastically replying to KarolBeckFan's snide remark. :p

I'm sure a few of the players playing Houston will go from Monte Carlo to Houston to Rome - basically probably any of the players who were accepted into Monte Carlo will play it, I'd imagine! But certainly it's not just Andy, much to KarolBeckFan's chagrin ;)

I'm not surprised Tommy is spending so much time in Houston - he is VERY popular there and he seems to enjoy it a lot. Mattress Mack seems to have a soft spot for him :)

Horna? hmmm.... Andy took him apart pretty good last year. And to lose badly on clay to Andy... wellllllllll........ :tape:

Massu surely SHOULD win the title. We shall see :)

I think there may be a few changes to this entry list, that's all. Wouldn't be surprised if JMG doesn't have to qualify and ends up getting in directly. We'll see.

Is it not unusual for the States to hold a clay event? How common is clay in America?

Great to see JK in the sig, Fee ;)!

03-30-2005, 04:38 PM
oh ok, gotcha Fee :)

This is the only one left now... there used to be Atlanta which was on green clay, but I think 2001 was the last year for that one. So yea I think the USMCC is the only one left.

There are two big WTA green clay events in the U.S.: Amelia Island, FL (Tier II) and Charleston, SC (Tier I).

You reckon it'll last??

Deboogle!.
03-30-2005, 05:44 PM
You reckon it'll last??

What, the WTA events? Yea, they're very popular, we even get ESPN coverage of them which, for events like them is very rare for us. They're also very well-attended by top players, I don't see those events leaving. But the women's game is so different, they can all play on all surfaces, for the most part - they can get the top players. the men's game is not quite that way and clay is simply not that popular or prevalent here. Then again, there aren't tons of grass courts in the US either, yet US men have done ok at wimbledon.... lol.

I mean if you look back at the 2001 Atlanta draw... it was pretty weak. I mean, it was Andy's first title and he was ranked well outside the top 100...If an 18 yr old new pro in as a wildcard who sucks on clay can win the title, you've gotta assume it was a pretty weak event  Then again he went to Houston the following week and won that on red clay, too, as a wildcard, but Mack has so much money and influence that he'll have the tournament for a long time I think.

ae wowww
03-30-2005, 06:35 PM
I didn't mean the WTA events, that's why I used singular 'it'.. Do you think the Houston event will last?

Deboogle!.
03-30-2005, 09:20 PM
Yes, I do. Like I said, I think Mack has too much money and influence for it to go anywhere.

Of course he should. Highly doubtful :o:o:o:o Especially now that he has a relatively decent excuse of a sprained wrist.

Edit: it looks pretty confirmed now - it's been removed from his official site's schedule :o:o:o

You guys make it sound like I'm 1)the only one of his fans who thinks it's stupid of him to play Houston instead of Monte Carlo and another European event and 2) that this is a new revelation for me. Well, it's neither. I've felt this way for a long time, and in the Andy forum there's discussion about how annoyed we all are in like 3 simultaneous threads  But I will take your comments at face value and just say "lol, thanks:)"

 it's his life and he'll get what he deserves on the clay season for favoring money and comfort over doing the right thing. At least there are a few tougher players in Houston this year so he won't have a cakewalk to the final like he's had the past 4 years, so if he does, it means he'll likely had to have pulled off at least one or two decent clay wins.

I see why Andy would want to play Houston; he's treated like a demi-god by the tournament and the fans there. It's easy, it's convenient, it's a short drive from home, he can have his family there with him, etc. I GET it, I just don't aree with it. But he's never gonna change :smash:

And, of course, if he then goes to Rome and Hamburg and Paris and does decently, he will come off looking brilliant for staying home and being better-rested. But there's no reason to believe this is what will happen :rolls:

It's far from a new revelation I actually think it was the 1st thing that we ever agreed on.
