He has played so well all year, and now he defeats Agassi and Roddick alogn with the Bryan brothers in DC. Too bad this will not help his ranking and I'm afraid he will have nothing left for IW. fulgore 03-07-2005, 01:16 AM Sheeh what an excitable lot you are. Ljubicic won in 5 sets, good for Croatia-as a nation they have little else to celebrate. But I feel Ljubicics fans are setting themselves up for disappointment. You can dispargae Ljubicis opponents all you want, but until Ljubicic actually acheives something noteworthy tennis wise- like finishing within the top 10, or winning a tier1 event-all this bluster just shows your ignorance of the game. Ivan is yet to show any form in Slam/Masters events. Scotso 03-07-2005, 01:17 AM  bye Pandy! He better be. Congrats to the Croats, the US disgraced themselves, total lack of heart. It was definently the right team, no matter how they played, but it should have been on grass and this is just one of many mistakes made my PMac in his reign as captain. Kick his ass out. Roddick fans can go home. Time to raise the Croatian flag on US territory. :yeah: robinhood 03-07-2005, 01:25 AM Now that the DC is over, Ivan should be aiming for Miami, I suggest. The Indian Wells is just too few days away from now, and he really really should watch out for any possible injuries! mitalidas 03-07-2005, 01:25 AM ivan rox to win three matches back to back in Davis cup, on HOSTILE soil, after his incredible year already, against a overhyped roddick is just phenomenal darnyelb 03-07-2005, 01:26 AM Anyone see Johnny Mac on ESPN Classic? He looked distraught! Don't think Patrick McEnroe is in any sort of danger. He got freakin' Agassi to play for the team, which is far more preferable to the likes of Fish/Ginepri playing (though sometimes I wonder about Dent). Amazing. You assemble one of the best US teams in recent memory to play a tie on hardcourts at HOME... and the opponent wins. Don't think there was anything Pat should've done differently.... right? mangoes 03-07-2005, 01:27 AM WOWOWOWOW..............What a match!!!! Well this American who cheered very loudly for Andy, must say that Ivan's win was truly deserved and earned. I am sad for us, but happy for him. Ivan is playing spectacular tennis. Heck, last week, Ivan managed to put a scare in Roger, so we all knew he was capable of beating Andy. Congrats Ivan. Coleburg83 03-07-2005, 01:27 AM "Don't think there was anything Pat should've done differently.... right?" Except play on the best surface for the US team. And on a minor note, having James Blake selected over several higher ranked players as a playing partner. WyveN 03-07-2005, 01:27 AM It was definently the right team, no matter how they played, but it should have been on grass and this is just one of many mistakes made my PMac in his reign as captain. Playing on grass would have been stupid. All it would have done is make Ancic stronger and make Agassi weaker. Well done Croatia, Ljubicic is certainly one of the top players right now but he must continue with this form in the big tournaments. pryss 03-07-2005, 01:27 AM congrats croats! thanks ivan! you may get drunk tonight and be tired for Pacific Life Open. i could not care less right now. tennischick 03-07-2005, 01:28 AM i don't see that the US team would have had the edge on grass. You assemble one of the best US teams in recent memory to play a tie on hardcourts at HOME... and the opponent wins. Don't think there was anything Pat should've done differently.... right? Exactly. Ivan was just better than everybody, even after playing for a month straight. Reminded me of Becker in the 80's when he would basically beat opposing teams all by himself. mangoes 03-07-2005, 01:29 AM Anyone see Johnny Mac on ESPN Classic? He looked distraught! You assemble one of the best US teams in recent memory to play a tie on hardcourts at HOME... and the opponent wins. Don't think there was anything Pat should've done differently.... right? No I don't think Patrick is at fault here. I think Ivan was underestimated. I like Andre but I feel that Andy was the one that all the US pressure was on. Andy worked hard, but was just outgunned. Coleburg83 03-07-2005, 01:29 AM That's the best argument I could make in support of it tennischick. tennischick 03-07-2005, 01:29 AM Playing on grass would have been stupid. Congrats to them. :hatoff: DC dream for US gone for another year. Oh well. This will just set the stage for our incredible comeback in 2006 on our ten/eleven-year DC title drought anniversay. And thanks, Ivan you arrogant prick, for the vcash at least. ;) darnyelb 03-07-2005, 01:32 AM i don't see that the US team would have had the edge on grass. Me too. Ancic would've killed Agassi, and perhaps Ljubicic too. What about CLAY though? Agassi and the Bryans are strong on it, and considering Andy challenged Nadal well on the surface, the US would've had a good chance. mangoes 03-07-2005, 01:34 AM Yeah sure. Come back to me when Ljubicic actually wins some fucking titles. I guess Roddick wil just have to go home and polish his trophies and count all the money he has; things Ivan can only dream of. I agree Tennischick, we just got beat    Coleburg83 03-07-2005, 01:35 AM Because the surface was what the Croats would have picked if they would have had the choice. Ljubicic and Ancic would have been strong on grass, but not as strong as they would be IMHo on the hard courts they were on and since the US lost, it's a theory in practice. Don't be a Sgrena. azza 03-07-2005, 01:35 AM Ivan well done :yeah: tennischick 03-07-2005, 01:36 AM Me too. Ancic would've killed Agassi, and perhaps Ljubicic too. What about CLAY though? Andre goes out in a blaze of non-glory. John wants to cry for his brother. Pat wants to keep his job. and the Duck is young enuf to chalk this up to experience. moving right along... enjoy your party Croatia. you deserve it :wavey: GoranIvanisevic546346 03-07-2005, 01:36 AM There is no surface on which USA will beat Croatia this weak. USA played quite well, but Ivan was magnificient this weekend and thats it. jmp 03-07-2005, 01:37 AM Congratulations Ivan, Croatia, and all Croatian fans! :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: I was rooting for a USA win. But, Ivan was spectacular the entire weekend. I was torn in my loyalties for today's match because Ivan has been trying to get a win over Andy for so long. I also knew that Andy needed the win to keep the US alive. The match was very exciting and Andy fought hard. So, congratulations to both men for showing their hearts and entertaining the fans. :) :) Good luck, Croatia, in the rest of your Davis Cup run. :D Good luck, USA, in September. :D poundcatt 03-07-2005, 01:37 AM Andy didn't lose. The USA lost. I wanted Croatia to win, but USA has to get its tennis act together. They can't rely on Roddick to win n DC. This is a team effort. Shape up USA tennis. Make this competative. Experimentee 03-07-2005, 01:38 AM  yeah, i love Agassi all but Pat should gone with Taylor. you need another big server to face big servers. Taylor has shown nothing recently to suggest that he would even challenge Ancic or Ljubicic. Just because he has a big serve doesnt mean he can win big matches or beat good players. It was the best team they could have picked, but the Croats were just too good. The US dont have anything to be ashamed about when facing a team in such form. El Legenda 03-07-2005, 01:38 AM I think most people here were actually saying how Ivan would definitely beat Andy. There was even a thread about it. yeah....the cocky american. I am sure they spent weeks deciding on a surface, this was the best one and there was not much more they could have done. Feel better, Johnny. poundcatt 03-07-2005, 01:47 AM This is pitiful., Now USA has Bob Bryan playing singles in a dead rubber, There is so much money spent in the USA on tennis, with no results & it can't all be on Roddick's shoulders. There's no doubt that Croatia deserved to win, the US team should still have won on this surface and there can be no doubt the right team won, but talking about Ivan as a great player is nonsense, he has no resume to prove it, a couple big wins in Davis Cup are not those credentials, especially in the first round. But the US DC org needs to fire PMac. Paialii 03-07-2005, 01:52 AM It was a good match, I must say. Andy's serve wasn't as good as I'm sure he and his team would have liked, but it held up moreso than his forehand which fell apart during the second set and throughout. I was shocked to see Andy lose his serve at love in the opening game of the fifth right after getting pumped up and winning the fourth set in a close tiebreaker. He definitely lost his concentration there and never gained it back. Reminded me of Lindsay Davenport in the third set at this year's Aussie Open final against Serena. Just a collapse of focus. In any case.. Ivan played an awesome match, he deserved the win. I got to see Andy take his shirt off and reveal a nice lookin' bod on live television, so all is good. :p ;) Argentine girl 03-07-2005, 01:52 AM Ivan, You are the real. Top 10 will be coming soon. Yes, Andy must have relaxed a bit with Andre back in DC, but it didn't matter, the weight still fell on him. Yes I am irritated by some of our "over glorified" tennis players who cannot support Andy. We do need a stronger team. mangoes 03-07-2005, 01:54 AM Don't underestimate Dent. One hell of a player on hardcourts. I guess Ivan should be able to come up with consistant results in big matches for a lot longer period of time than just three months. Still, this victory is a huge stepping stone in the right direction that could steer him into Top 10 and beyond. croat123 03-07-2005, 02:02 AM :wavey: Paialii 03-07-2005, 02:02 AM LOL, I don't think PMac has anything to do with it. Ivan just won great, maybe the greatest match of his life, beating Andy Roddick 4:6 6:3 7:6(11) 6:7(7) 6:2 and won third point to beat Americans in the first round tie of Davis Cup. His dominance over Americans continued. Two years ago it was 3:0 with the help of Goran Ivanisevic, now it was 3:0 with the help of Mario Ancic in Carson City. Do you know when someone won 3:0 twice against Americans? It was one hundred years ago and his name was Laurence Doherty... Ivan fired 18 aces, saving the last one for match point. When it looked as if everything was falling apart, when Ivan double faulted on Roddick's set point after saving three set points in a row, the question was left hanging in the air how much energy was left in Ivan's tired legs. But the break in the first game of the decider (to love), and another one in fifth game gave him wings regardless the cramps in his legs. His head and hand stayed firm. It was Roddick who fell apart. The key moment was third set tie break. Ivan stayed firm after Roddick broke back. He managed to fight back after trailing 2:4 in tie break, saved three set points and converted his fourth set point. Not even the loss of the fourth set bothered him, he ran away with the decider and found himself in the arms of captain Pilic and the team. Eight hours and 45 minutes on court and three points against Americans in California. Even Agassi couldn't help Americans. Ivan is playing in the form of his life. ATP had it right. On the ATP web page, under "One to watch" is Ivan Ljubicic... Americans will remember him, that's for sure CooCooCachoo 03-07-2005, 07:37 AM :aparty: Ivan :aparty: :worship: Sorry Andy  ugotlobbed 03-07-2005, 07:37 AM andys a nub who cant even beat some injured guy........but ivan is good......but u know wat ......argentina is far too superior for any teams out there El Legenda 03-07-2005, 07:37 AM I dont care what you guys say about Ivan..the way he played last 3 days after a month of tennis....even being "tired" the way be played vs Andy.. there is no way he wont go deep in majors if he plays like this..the guy is just playing great. -wokkel- 03-07-2005, 07:46 AM WOW! It's not that I'm very surprised Ivan won coz I saw how well he played in Rotterdam but I'm more puzzled with yet another poor final set scores from Andy here especially when all odds were vs his opponent. I totally agree. The weight of the DC has been on Andy's shoulders. Yes, Andy must have relaxed a bit with Andre back in DC, but it didn't matter, the weight still fell on him. Yes I am irritated by some of our "over glorified" tennis players who cannot support Andy. We do need a stronger team. Funny how we read about how strong the US team is this year and now suddenly, we're talking about Andy having to carry the team?? They have one of the best double pair in the world who I believe DC records were close to perfect prior to this and I'm pretty sure many other teams will be happy having Andre as the second player. That line up is about as good as many other teams can dream for really. Yes as it turned out they didn't get the points for the team here, but can't be expecting the Bryan twins to win forever and who's to say if Andy did manage to beat Ivan, Andre can't deliver? Andy is hardly the only no.1 player in the team who more times than not were expected to win both the singles. Heck, for some throw in the doubles even. Then again, it's neither Andy's fault that the team lose here, Ivan was in hot form and I wonder if many other players could have beaten him anyway. They just ran into a very hot team/player, that's it. Undoubtedly though is the incredible effort from Ivan. That was certainly very special :worship: BIGMARAT 03-07-2005, 04:30 PM Ivan is so Hot!!!! On Sunday the U.S. was knocked out in the first round of the 2005 competition, less understandably on their favorite hardcourt surface behind the "Dream Team" of Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and the Bryan brothers in doubles. Once again the Americans "gave it their all," leaving American fans asking, "That's all we have to give?" Unlike the final in Spain, the U.S. had numerous chances over the weekend that were blown by nerves, slowed reflexes and a repeated inability to close the door on opponents. Up first on Friday, Andre Agassi making his return to the team after a five-year absence with all the fanfare due a former No. 1 Davis Cup hero filling a large hole at the No. 2 singles spot on the U.S. squad. But age touches even heroes, and Agassi struggled with an admitted bout of nerves and Ivan Ljubicic's kick serve. The hot-handed Croat made Agassi look slow -- Justin Gimelstob/Todd Martin/Lindsay Davenport-type slow -- curling the American wide then pounding winners to the open court as Agassi so readily did to opponents in days gone by. Agassi's last three losses have been to Roger Federer, Jurgen Melzer and Ivan Ljubicic, only one of which you'll see in the Tennis Hall of Fame 20 years from now. Formerly one of the hardest hitters on tour, Agassi can no longer hang with the biggest bashers in the Top 10, and was unable to pull the trigger during big rallies against Ljubicic where in year's past he would have ended the point with a dazzler, ala Federer. While Agassi's on-court skills have diminished, his off-court persona still has a strong rankings lead at No. 1. Agassi's grace and philanthropy in his mid-to latter years on tour is a complete turn-around from his hair-rocking "Image is Everything" early days, and still manages to impress. "After the match, Andre came in our locker room and he said that he was privileged to watch this match," said Ljubicic after sealing the tie for Croatia. "(He said) enjoy these moments -- enjoy this moment because it doesn't last forever. I really appreciate that from him and I think he's a great person." But we're getting ahead of ourselves. With Agassi's loss and the U.S. at an 0-1 deficit, Roddick stepped in to level the tie, shrugging off some first-set jitters with a four-set win over Croatia's Mario Ancic, who nervously double-faulted and unforced-errored his way out of contention during the match. Ancic, who entered the match with a 2-6 singles win-loss record in Davis Cup World Group play, remained true to form with still his only two wins over Olivier Rochus of Belgium and American Taylor Dent. The U.S. remained upbeat entering the Saturday doubles, with American stalwarts Bob and Mike Bryan taking their 5-0 career Davis Cup record against Ljubicic and Ancic, who they had beaten in all three of their career meetings. With almost two sets completed the crowd at the Home Depot Center was rocking, with a set in hand for the Bryans and a set point in the second-set tiebreak. But after losing the first set point, and failing to convert on two more, the Bryans dropped the set, and the match momentum. Noticeably disappointed with a drop in their energy, the twins went down 6-4, 6-4 in the next two sets. Ljubicic continued to carry the Croatian flag in the doubles, displaying deft touch and movement as the net while the brothers struggled to return the service bombs of the twin towers. On day three the U.S. faced a large hurdle with Roddick and Agassi needing wins, but U.S. captain Patrick McEnroe was confident with his best horses in the race. The younger McEnroe gamely suggested to the media that the pressure was still on the visiting Croats to close the door despite their 2-1 lead. Which drew a chuckle from Croatian captain Nikki Pilic. Roddick opened the proceedings Sunday, hoping not only to level the tie at 2-2 but give his hero Agassi a shot at redemption. Ljubicic was having none of it. The slow, gritty hardcourt laid for the tie, as ESPN commentator John McEnroe observed, was too slow. At least too slow for Roddick's game plan, if you could call it that, against Ljubicic. The gritty hardcourt proved the undoing of Agassi, who prefers a ball that skids more into his wheelhouse rather than losing momentum and fluffing up. The gritty surface also aided the kick of Ljubicic's serve on Friday. But Roddick had no gripes with the surface itself, which was not a far throw from the slate trad upon during his 2003 US Open win. Roddick has a nasty kick serve of his own, can hit through the grit more easily with his lively arm, and could appreciate the extra few seconds the grittier hardcourt could might give him to set up for his blistering forehand. No, the problem for Roddick wasn't exactly the court itself, but how he approached it in the match against Ljubicic. Roddick apparently came out of his pre-match coaching session, if there was one, with his own plan: 'I'm going to hit a lot of winners.' Anyone who follows tennis saw the drill that Roddick needed to employ Sunday: Make Ljubicic, who had already this year played a lot of tennis reaching four finals and playing two matches in the last two days, run. Keep him moving, don't be afraid to get into some long points, keep the unforced errors to a minimum. But instead Andy went into Pull Mode, pulling the trigger sometimes from ridiculous positions on court, and doing anything but making Ljubicic grind out long points. After the match Ljubicic said he had started cramping as early as the third set, but he didn't show any signs of cramping or slowing down until calling for a trainer late in the fifth set. By this time, trailing 1-4 in the fifth, it was too late for Roddick to employ any strategy other than wait and see if Ljubicic went into a full-body cramp, or was ordered to report back to Croatia at that moment for military duty. Another perplexing aspect of Roddick's game against Ljubicic was his propensity to think it was a Wimbledon final. An interesting match statistic, in addition to net charges, would be to see how many times Roddick did his "all-this-and-the-kitchen-sink"-type approach shot where it seemed the sole hope was that Ljubicic would miss the pass. If I saw one more point of Roddick hitting a cross-court backhand slice approach and Ljubicic spanking a one-handed pass down the line, I'd have suspected ESPN of putting on a tape loop in lieu of a rain delay. Roddick's goal of improving his transition and net game is noble in an effort to close the gap between himself and the all-court game of Federer, but frequently misapplied. How many times have you seen Andy get tight and seek to rectify the situation by immediately running to the net, as he inexplicably did against the tired and cramping Ljubicic to drop his serve to begin the fifth set? "Bottom line, I didn't make him play good tennis," Roddick said afterwards in a moment of revelation. "I felt I was the fresher of the two of us, but I just kicked the game away." Thus ended another run for the country that has won more Davis Cup titles than any other, has spawned more players who have spent more time at No. 1 than any other, but has failed to raise the Davis Cup for more than 10 years now. We know Andy Roddick and Andre Agassi have personal coaches. We know the U.S. has a team coach. Perhaps they could put their heads together in the future, if there is a future for Agassi on the team, and figure out exactly the best surface for a tie, and exactly the best way to approach playing the game on the surface, and exactly how to approach a tired and cramping opponent. After that you can all sit and ponder the chances of Andre saying yes to playing a potential September Davis Cup Qualifying tie in Chile or India or Pakistan. Probably about the same as Spain laying down a home grasscourt for a Davis Cup tie. Meanwhile the fair-weather U.S. tennis fans will continue to crow about big-name stars failing to learn how to play like a team, while fans in the know will quietly sulk over what could have been, putting their crazy red, white, and blue hats up in the closet with their tiny American flags and crazy Styrofoam wavy-things and saying, yet again, "Wait until next year." undomiele 03-07-2005, 06:10 PM Judging from the tone of most of the American media's take on the US's performance in DC this year, its a low, low point for American tennis. Very odd, but maybe he did and Roddick didn't have anything left to give. However, I don't think it would have mattered. Ljubo had been in grind mode most of the match (as opposed to Friday where he clearly had more energy and was hitting out more) and he was a man on a mission. Would likely just have postponed the inevitable. I think Andy put everything into the fourth set tiebreak and was spent emotionally after it was done. Remember, he was points from losing the cup in that tiebreak, so he must have been extremely nervous. Nothing else really explains that horrible first game he played in the fifth. Maybe some info on P Mac's coaching will pop up in an article and find its way here. I'd definitely be curious to know. Does Roddick have the ability to grind (at least with the top grinders)? To me, he always seems to get a bit tentative (especially on the backhand) when trying to grind, and then tends to float balls long. I don't think he's as comfortable grinding as hitting out and being aggressive, although it definitely would have been a good strategy for Sunday. Ivan looked a bit tired to me most of the match and didn't seem to have as much pop on his shots as the previous two days. Although, it's possible Ljubo just said to himself 'I'm going to keep the ball in play today, wait for Roddick to make stupid errors, and beat him mentally. Regardless, Roddick still had his shots to win in the tiebreaks. Do you know if the match statistics for that match are posted anywhere? :) undomiele 03-09-2005, 04:39 PM however i think the writer is referring to a complete gameplan that should have been in effect from the beginning. in other words, if the situation were reversed and the Duck had played Lbj in the opening match and then Agassi then had to face him after the twins lost, Agassi's gameplan would have been to wear him down and get those legs to seize up by Set 1. that was the obvious thing to do. but the Duck never employed that strategy. it looked to me as if he was just hoping and wishing that if he went for his big shots, Lbj wouldn't be able to get them back. stupid gameplan, especially on a slowed-down court. so why did Pat Mac not tell him even after the first set -- "time to change your plan DuckyLuv, stop going for broke and wear this goddam Croat down".
