sorry to disappoint you guys but I don't think Rafa's going to play Indian Wells...apparently he needs to rest and will reappear in Miami. I read this in another forum and the person just said "Rafa said this to the Spanish press"...so I can't give you a more accurate source. but if I find something more exact, I'll post it here...or if someone else does, please do so as well!

EL MANACORÍ RENUNCIA A INDIAN WELLS TRAS UN MES SIN DESCANSO
Nadal se ve obligado a parar por la Davis
JOAN SOLSONA. Enviado especial a Bratislava (Eslovaquia)

I've translated it for the non-Spanish speakers:

THE MANACORIAN WITHDRAWS FROM INDIAN WELLS AFTER A MONTH WITHOUT A BREAK

Rafael Nadal has competed in 6 tournaments this year, including the Davis Cup. His consistency in results, with 2 consecutive titles in the South American clay season has lifted him to #6 in the Champions Race with 136 points. Nadal landed in Bratislava last Monday without resting for 21 days, during which he participated in the ATP tournaments in Buenos Aires, Brazil and Acapulco. After 13 singles matches and 3 doubles matches, his body has said "enough!". The Manacorian is physically drained after not having had a rest last month, travelling and time differences...

He already knew that going to Bratislava could take its toll on him, but Nadal has always maintained that Davis Cup is a priority, even though it's going to cost him not going to Indian Wells (first masters series of the year that begins this Friday) because of his muscular problems. I need to rest and I'm going to take a few days off to prepare for the Miami tournament. Looking back on the tie against Slovakia, they were the better team, but the court was not done according to the rules. I don't understand why the ITF is inflexible with unimportant things and then they don't control the court surface, which is fundamental for the result" indicated the Majorcan yesterday.

Ferrero and Robredo

Rafa is an example of a player dedicated to the "salad bowl" tournament. The Spanish captains know it and that's why they consider him a leader. Jordi Arrese and Juan Avendaño yesterday remembered the 2 absentees in Bratislava, that is, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo. "When Spain loses, all the players lose. Ferrero and Robredo included" said Avendaño. "To return permanently to the team, it's them who have to want to play. Ferrero wanted to concentrate on improving his ranking and Tommy excused himself because of his shoulder", explained Arrese

Did I understand it right, that the capitains are a little bit pissed off Tommy and Juan Carlos (in this article)? Haven't practiced spanish for a while, so may be I am wrong...

Hey, i wrote it before I saw Emily's translation. So I was right.

yes you're right...they're quite pissed off at JC and Tommy...here's some more from another article with some of Jordi's comments:

Jordi Arrese: "We're confident of staying in the World Group." Asked about the players the G2 would count on, he discounted the fact that Carlos Moyà would change his plans of not playing Davis Cup this year, and regarding the absentees Juan Carlos Ferrero and Tommy Robredo, he stated that "to come back, they are the ones who have to want to play", reminding that for the Slovakia tie, "Ferrero said he wanted to concentrate on getting his singles career back on track and Robredo gave problems in his right shoulder as his reason, although last week he got to the semifinals in Dubai. We are not the ones who should respond to this issue"

Similarly, Juan Avendaño highlighted that "Juan Carlos and Tommy have also lost. All of Spanish tennis has lost. We brought the best team we could here"

Em,

I have to agree with you about Rafa trying to get some rest. He has a long stretch of tournaments to play the next month.

I hope he plays really well in Miami along with all the Spanish players. What do you think of Rafa's draw?

~EMiLiTA~
03-22-2005, 05:59 AM
well...his draw is not that great, to be honest...he'll have a tough job against Roddick...there are too many Spaniards in this quarter!!! all I hope is that Rafa does his best...

adelaide
03-22-2005, 01:07 PM
about the Roddick-Nadal match.. im not saying Rafa's gonna win exactly, but unlike what some people are saying on the GM, i'll be surprised if Andy can bagel Rafael again. It's not gonna be as easy as USO last year.....

~EMiLiTA~
03-22-2005, 01:14 PM

RAFAEL NADAL: No, it's okay. I like the shorts. It's comfortable. It's okay. I gonna play with the shorts all year, no.

Q. What do you call them?
RAFAEL NADAL: Pirates. so now we know

Q. Will you at all, if it is Federer in the final, be thinking back to that evening last year here?

RAFAEL NADAL: No, I think every match is different. And this is I have another year. I have 19 now...

Q. 18 (laughter).

im so nervous right now. and the final's like 24 hours away.... and im freaking out already :scared:

i'm glad rafa deals well with pressure. im glad he knows how to get over things quite quickly. i don't know what's gonna happen, i dont think he's gonna be so easy for Roger (best out of 5 -- in whose favour does that work? im not sure  ) but whatever happens, one thing i dont want to hear is, Rafael's overrated, overhyped, etc etc. I just want him to prove a point, more than I want him to win the title.

Well, I just made a phonecall to Eurosport.... goodness me.....

First tournaments (ATP) they will show are: Queens & Rosmalen, oh and of course RG, but that's ITF.

Anyway, what this guy wants me to believe:scratch:, is that 20% of people watching Eurosport are the ones who actually watch because they are tennisfans. The other 80% watch because they are bored... and they wanna see WTA!

So I said: but what's the fun in the no.1 player double bagling the no.3 of the world?! That's no match is it:( ??? And at the same time, you have the guys playing the most brilliant matches!!

But, they only look at what the public wants...so I said I chatted with people here on MTF, from all over Europe, and we all want ATP!

Sorry to disappoint you all here, but we don't want ATP....or so this idiot said... :fiery:

I continued: in 2003 we got lots of ATP...then in 2004 only WTA! I thought we could go back in 2005 or devide! But no, there's no money to be made for Eurosport showing ATP! Of course, the money issue! :(

I don't get it, I really don't..... why watch the boring WTA....(at least, 95% of the matches suck!) tennis fan or not.... Is it me???

They used to sometimes give us the semis and final of ATP tourneys... or a summary of the final....but no, not even that!!!

Eurosport pisses me off bigtime!!! :fiery:

Hey Sjoukje, damn Eurosport!!!! So basically we in Holland are screwed... The NOS will only show the dutch players, so unless we suddenly have a top 10 player (don't hold your breath) we won't have any coverage there. And stupid Eurosport shows WTA so horny guys can.... (won't finish that sentence...)

I was hoping Sporza might do us a favour... They showed Kim last night, but then again, she's from Belgium....

yeah...reminds me of the time i rang up channel 9 here in 2002 when they didn't show the US Open on tv...i mean come on, that's a grand slam and they didn't show it AT ALL. as it is the us open is crap for us because it's on in the middle of the night but at least we could tape the matches. the guy on the phone just told me "there's no demand for tennis and it's not worth buying the rights"...i was like, what do these ppl watch then? it's a grand slam! and the final was between sampras and agassi, whether u like them or not, they're 2 greats of the game, and they didn't even show THAT! i couldn't believe it!!

apparently last year here they didn't show any RG either...i don't know cos i was living in Spain where i luckily had good eurosport coverage and also went to the tournament for a few days...but i was pissed they didn't show wimby...

oh he even made a suggestion to switch to Eurosport 2!! So I told him: A. we only have it now so we can see what we're (not) missing... B. It's the same as Eurosport 1!!! No ATP only WTA!!!!! And 80% of the programs is the news....:(

And when he said: 'before I answer your question, there's too much tennis on Eurosport at the moment' I thought I was going to explode!!! :fiery:

So, yeah Louise, we're screwed! Unless we take out an expensive subcription to god knows what, or buy a satellite thingie or something......

I'm in NY and we're getting the Rafa match on ESPN.

If there's anything I think you all will find interesting during the match, I'll have the site up and will post it.

Surprised you're not getting it on Eurosport - that's a definitely bummer - and I've wanted to move to Europe because I thought you had better tennis coverage than we do! ;)

Sjoukje, you have Eurosport 2??? I only have the ordinary Eurosport...

My mate is considering getting sky digital, I will then pay extra for the sports channels. And sky sports does show TMS events, so that's great! Bad news is that this mate of mine lives in Germany...

Sporza is stupid :p I think they have no idea what "ATP" means, all they care for is Kim Clijsters (thank god we still got her!). And we were VERY lucky to see that final, just like the one from Indian Wells! They're improving their tennis coverage, but sadly only for WTA.

But I will shut up now about that and cheer for Rafa!!! come on little man

Sjoukje, Sky Digital is an english satellite thingie. It's pretty expensive, loads of people in England have it. But I think you need an address in England to which they send the bills and stuff. But if you are seriously interested you should check it out!! :)

They've just taken the court.

Fashion report - Rafa is wearing his orange shirt, white pirate pants, and white headband.

They had a tape of Rafa talking about Roger - he said that he beat Roger last year in Miami because he played aggressively. Says that he has been doing that this year, and needs to do it again today against Roger.

His coach/uncle says that Rafa's best attribute is his attitude - he has a big heart. Says in order for Rafa to win he has to hit ball higher than normal and get higher percentage of second serve points won.

And match is about to begin!!!

VAMOS RAFA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
