is Paul Henri Mathieu about to choke away another tie?

He was up 2 sets to love against Thomas Johansson in the deciding rubber and served for it in the 3rd. Then T. Jo broke back, won the set TB, and is now up a break in the 4th.

If Mathieu loses this, what a nightmare for him after what happened in the 2002 final.

Will you change the title of this if he wins the match?

No. I'd rather have egg on my face in public :)

Besides, my title was a question, not a statement that he was going to lose the match.

I don't expect him or want to him to win, but I'll go for him now just because of you.

Well done, PHM. This is the kind of match that can make a player finally realize his potential.

I was rooting for Sweden, but was more glad Mathieu won that match. Hope it does him good confidence-wise.

I didn't mean anything mean by this thread. It's just when Mathieu is leading 2 sets and loses the 3rd after serving for the tie, memories of '02 HAVE to be creeping into your head at that point. Good to see PMH regrouped.

this would have been alot worse considering Tojo is pretty useless on clay and PHM nearly made him a grandmaster :o

But Paulo did play rather well, didn't he? ;) I was in awe of some of the shots he hit, considering he's ranked 90+.

LOL, silverwhite, PHM definitely has the shots!!!!!!!! He was AWESOME in 2002 winning the Kremlin Cup and Lyon before the DC final. I sooooooooo like him since then. He had some bad injuries last year so he's gotta improve his ranking now, that doesn't say much at the moment.

I just bumped who will win the DC thread and you'll see how everyone voted.

It was a good performance by Paulo, but he's lucky he was playing ToJo not a great claycourter, but he got the job done.

Mattieu is extremely talented, but he's never shown that he "has it" between the ears, which is why people are critical of him. At the risk of getting bad repped by all the Frenchies, he's somewhat your typical French player.... talented but not able to capitalize. It must be the water over there :p

Well done to PHM for almost solely winning it for the FRance DC team.:) I really do hope this guy hits his strides soon, he's incredibly talented and very fun to watch.

typical indeed. they're always good in the junior tour, and then... and it's even more true for PHM. He was the best among his peers when he was young (the peers being Roddick, Coria, Nalby...) but couldn't capitalize. And bad bad injuries last year as Maria said.

I hope he'll be injury free now. And he's really good on clay. Today he was moving so well, and had amazing shots, especially in the 2 first sets.

About the DC 2002 bad memories. Don't worry. After his win over Moya in last year semis and his great weekend against Sweden, the trauma seems to belong to the past ;)

That's very true though. It's sometimes really frustrating cheering for them.
