A shocker from Gooch. 57% first serve percentage, only 8 aces and he let Canas have 14 break points. You can't expect to win anything playing like that. He had 8 break points himself and only managed one.
Just reading these old messages, you cant win anything with 57% first serve percentage?? What? Thats actually an average amount to get in, especially a big serve like his, for a big server getting over 55% should be enough to win a lot of points on serve

Um, thanks for that dose of nostalgia. Fact is, 57% of first serves into play against a returner of Canas' quality is not good. He gave Canas 14 breakpoints and was broken 4 times. Are you saying he would've been happy with his serving performance?

05-19-2008, 12:38 PM
I was just having a look at the scoreboard in the match against Schuettler then looked up his recent results and I don't understand the long break either.
I agree with the_natural that a 57% first serve percentage is good and if it's not good enough to win, it's more to do with the quality of the serve in terms of placement and variety, other parts of his game like maybe poor follow-up volleys and good returning from the opponent (likely a combination of all things).
krystlel
05-19-2008, 12:44 PM
 Speaking of first serve percentages, he has gotten 71% first serves in against Schuettler and is on the verge of being broken for the third time. Obviously he can't be going for his first serves that much.

I was at Wimby on Monday and watched Gooch's match. It was quite funny cos the stands were packed but when Bozoljac came onto court and everyone realised Monfils had withdrawn, people hit the exits like mad!
Anyway, Gooch was terrible. Everyone could see from the first set that he was by far the better player but couldn't put him away. He had chances galore to break serve...he must've had 0-40 a couple of times at least, but kept throwing them away. Then when he served at 5-4 down he would miss easy volleys and gift Bozoljac the set.
It's hard to criticise Gooch cos he's probably trying his best, but he just doesn't seem to have a spark on court. He just tends to mope around. It felt like he was the lucky loser and Bozoljac was the higher ranked player just by the way they behaved on court.

Yeah really pathetic stuff from the Gooch in Spain. Hes not playing next week but has direct entry into Indaniapolis the week after. Hes not on the qualifying list for Toronto Masters the week after so I guess hes going to either play one challenger in America or is just going straight to Asia to prepare for the Olympics. Im sure he wants it but for him it is so hard to play a good game of tennis on a consistent basis. He still somehow gets broken which means he needs to do some breaking of service of his own. I really hope for tennis in Australias sake that the Gooch stays in the top 100 until the begining of next year where he will have lots of points to defend in Sydney. At this rate he wont even directly qualify for the US Open.

Due to his bad drop in ranking Chris is now playing challengers again. He will head to South Africa next week where he will not be seeded. Staying in SA for another challenger in East London (although I heard it got cancelled) and then will play a challenger in Tunisia. After that I don't know.

Gooch seems to do reasonably well in the US. I think if he sticks to the challenger circuit he will keep up the good showings. If he steps up to the ATP tour then it is anyone's guess. He is capable of losing to a Futures journeyman whilst also being capable of knocking off a top 20 player.
Will be interesting to see his chances of getting the US Open wildcard are. Surely Tomic won't get it unless he starts putting in some good results on the challenger tour given the recent results of Gooch, Looch, Ball and Lindahl.
Audacity
07-21-2009, 05:50 AM
Gooch will probably make it to the main draw anyway, and since they are going with the "youth only" policy he won't receive the wildcard... I don't think Tomic should get the wildcard - he hasn't proved himself enough yet... Maybe if Groth has a couple of solid months he will get the wildcard, maybe Lindahl if he steps up. Ball was knocked out in the first round of a challenger last week, so lets see how he goes in the next couple months... out of the top 200 now...
Can't see Gooch doing much more than some solid challenger wins... but even that is not a certainty.

Guccione making the most of his time out
DARREN WALTON
January 2, 2010 - 10:59AM
AAP
For Australian tennis ace Chris Guccione, absence indeed makes the heart grow fonder.
While Guccione will miss the entire Australian summer with a torn Achilles, the 24-year-old says his time away from the game has helped him appreciate the two great loves of his life.
After popping the question to American girlfriend Andra Kucerak during a romantic holiday in New York in November, the talented under-achiever is now vowing to also devote more time to on-court matters.
As is often the case with comeback athletes, a refreshed Guccione feels hungrier than ever to finally make good on his potential after experiencing a frustrating mid-career setback.
"It's been great to get away from it for a while," he told AAP.
"I got engaged and my fiancee is out here now for another few weeks, so I'm doing a bit of training in the gym at the moment and enjoying my time with her.
"But I can't wait to get back into it. I'm not sure I needed six months off.
"It's not a bad thing, though. I'll come back fitter than I've ever been and champing at the bit.
"I'm sure my best tennis is ahead of me."
One would hope so.
Despite boasting multiple victories over grand slam champions and world No.1s Rafael Nadal, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Davis Cup teammate Lleyton Hewitt, Guccione has yet to even crack the top 60.
Unfortunately, his most sustained run of form came last July-August when he won a Florida Challenger event and reached the last 16 at a Masters Series tournament for the first time in Cincinnati.
Just as he looked to be peaking for the US Open, having toppled former Australian Open runner-up Jo-Wilfried Tsonga the week after the Frenchman snapped Roger Federer's 21-match winning streak, Guccione hurt his foot playing doubles with Hewitt in Washington.
A nasty injury at the best of times, Guccione has to be extra careful managing his given the left-hander's game is so reliant on his big serving.
"It's the right leg and that's the leg I push off on and land on when I serve," the former Wimbledon junior finalist said.
"And after I serve, I serve and volley so I have to land and push off straight away on that right leg.
"So it's never going to work until it's 100 per cent.
"But I can't really complain. I had a pretty good run with basically no injuries for eight years fulltime on tour prior to that."
Guccione will spend the summer rehabilitating and strengthening his leg and hopes to return in March, using an injury-protected ranking of No.118.
He will need to improve to about No.105 by May to gain direct entry to the French Open and then Wimbledon.
"It's coming along slowly. I'll get there eventually," Guccione said.
"I'm definitely looking forward to getting back on the court and putting in the hard yards again.
"I'm only 24 now, so I'll get this foot right and get the right mindset going, be positive and be ready to go again."
In the meantime, he plans to watch all the summer's action on TV.
"I really hope that Lleyton can give the Open a good nudge this year," he said.
"I heard he's training hard and hitting the ball pretty well and he's back fighting fit and coming off a great last year.
"I'd love to see him go deep again. That was awesome watching him a few years ago (in 2005) when he won all those five-setters and made the final."
Gooch's protected ranking will be 118 when he returns in March.

Another poor result for Gooch. The doubles final, played on a Sunday, not the normal Saturday, will have wrecked the preparation for Gooch, Ball and Jonesie. They had to travel overnight from Aptos to Kentucky and only arrived, no doubt sleep-deprived, at 1pm yesterday. No preparation time and very tired. Some bad scheduling for Gooch saw him play his singles QF, followed immediately by a 1st round doubles match, followed immediately by another doubles match, a tough one which went to the match tie-break, against Feeney and Jonesie. Gooch won 6-3 6-2. Next up is 4th seed Robbye Poole who is ranked 520 in the world. Poole made the final of an American futures tournament last week but this is a match the Gooch should win.

Once again Gooch dropped the first set but recovered to win the match 3-6 6-3 6-3. Next up will be top seed Artem Sitak. Sitak is capable of pulling off an upset if Gooch plays sub standard tennis but if he plays anything remotely decent he should pull through and make the final.

Tough on the big servers playing Futures and not getting new balls as often as they would like. More of a grind in the Futures, levels the playing field for the big guys. Good to see Gooch coping and building confidence. Hope he makes the final.

:rocker2: Gooch is into the final after a 7-6(5) 6-4 win and now takes on a young qualifier by the name of Daniel Kosakowski who the Gooch will be very confident of beating. Good luck Gooch.

Good to see him atleast getting some wins. It will certainly give him some confidence as he works towards getting back to the challenger level eventually.

Hopefully he can take this final in straight sets and get a confidence boost ahead of next week's sacramento challenger where he is in the main draw!!

He has a protected ranking, doesn't he? Completely forgot about that. Hopefully he uses it wisely.

Gooch takes out the final 6-3 6-4 :clap2:.
His section for the 50k Sacramento Challenger on Hardcourt.
[1] Tobias KAMKE (GER) vs Amer DELIC (BIH)
Chris GUCCIONE (AUS) vs [WC] Denis KUDLA (USA)
Alex BOGOMOLOV Jr. (USA) vs [WC] Michael MCCLUNE (USA)
Jesse LEVINE (USA) vs [7] Izak VAN DER MERWE (RSA)
Gooch will be happy with that first round matchup. Kudla was the runner up at the US Open juniors this year but his senior results seem to suggest that this is a match that the Gooch will be confident of winning.

Nice stuff Gooch. Oppons.ent in the second round is top seed Tobias Kamke. Kamke had a three setter against Delic today. Hopefully Gooch can use the confidence he has from the winning streak and cause an upset.
