This Challenger is allowed some exemptions to the rules (for whatever reason) and they can offer a Wildcard to any player ranked higher than 11 who loses by 6 pm on Sunday in Indian Wells. There will be many changes to this list after IW starts and I will try to keep on top of them all. Main draw play starts on Tuesday, March 15th.

Well, they aren't forced :p They choose to play Sunrise themselves. If they'd want to play in the main draw of a Challenger, a lot of them could probably have gone to Sarajevo or Salinas, where they'd get in with ease and be seeded too. But they want to stay in the USA, which is understandable.

Lucky you Dulrich :D

I just called for Alex B.'s result and got absolutely nowhere. They tried to tell me that he's still on court. He was scheduled to be second with a 9 AM start for the day so I find that unlikely with it being 1 PM.

I also went to look at the website on the off chance that results from Round 1 might be up. It's a well-designed website but doesn't do a lot of good when there's nothing to offer

I guess it depends on how you look at it. There are only so many spots in Challengers to go around so to say that some of these guy had a choice in what Challenger may not be accurate. A lot of these guys do not have sponsorships so they may not have the money to travel either so that's why they choose to play in the States. So, yes some of these guys are being forced to play Quallies for a Challenger where they would normally be in the Main Draw & possibly be seeded.

Well, I wouldn't exactly call that forced either. The ones that don't have the sponsorships are most likely to be the ones that wouldn't get a seeding in a different Challenger this week.

Don't quite get your logic

Just because someone is ranked high enough to be seeded doesn't equate good sponsorship.

I don't quite understand the problems people are having with this tournament. It is designed to draw big names, higher ranked players. It offers more points and more money, and a surface similar to Miami. So it's more competitive, that's what tennis is about. Any of the guys who had a problem with it could have taken the week off and stayed at home to save money. It's more worthwhile to complain about the way the USTA seems to have screwed around with the Challenger schedule this year in a way that has seriously affected some of the guys' ability to defend their points.

I like how you say people rather than just state it directly  .

It is "designed" to sell maximum amount of tickets. Challengers are not for "higher ranked" players. There is a reason why there are Challengers and why there is "ATP level." By allowing the higher ranked professionals to play this tournament it takes away another chance for those who play at Challenger level to earn their points and go up to the next level.

Tricky_Forehand
03-14-2005, 08:37 PM
I think the rule was that if someone in the entry list was still playing IW as of 6 PM PST then they would be withdrawn without penalty.

Jarkko had that late match vs. Safin so he was removed from the list.

This stronger than some ATP events

But you cant fault the top players for wanting to play here, it is good preparation for Miami rather than just sitting around twiddling their thumbs for a week. If the other players are scared to play them they should just stay home and save their money :p

Dominik is here but I doubt he will win it. He hasnt won a challenger for some time, no matter how weak the field. I think he goes easy to give the challenger players a chance to make money ;)

OK, this is the last time I will say anything about this. I am obviously alone in my opinion and I'm fine with that.

What I mind is classifying this tournament as a Challenger when, in all reality, it's not. The only reason this tournament is of Challenger status is due to prize money and because it's the 2nd week of a major tournament. I had issues when it was in Boca too. You all just didn't hear me bitch as much because Alex wasn't entered ;).

If you spoke to Mary-Beth...yes she is very nice. Then again, I hope it wasn't her or the poor woman is working a 12 hour shift. I never said she wasn't nice...only sounded a bit frustrated/impatient. The poor lady has had to deal with me about 4 or 5 times over a course of 2 days and, if things go well for the next 4 days.

By tomorrow I may not even have to say more than Alex's first name.

Perhaps this is why no one in the US is calling for scores. Do any of the Challengers this week have scores, live scores, or decent websites?

I will call in a few minutes for JMG's score. If they are not too hurried sounding, I will try to ask for other scores. It's a long distance call for me, which is beyond my budget at this time and I don't want to use too many of my cell phone minutes as going over my limit is also beyond my budget (not that I have to explain myself to anyone here).

Anyway, play has been rained out for the day. The following players won their matches, and no, I don't have scores: Hrbaty, Andreev, Zib, Philippoussis, and Martin. No other matches were completed. The OOP will be out later.

Old folks round these parts prefer to play on the green gravel (that har-tru garbage,) tis easier on the double knee replacements.

So maybe there wasn't any other option for them....

you don't need lights during the day hun, which is my point ;)

So, what part of my original post (#157 on page 11 of this thread) did you all miss?

And Swisha, I'm not an idiot, I know what 'chill out' means. I was perfectly calm when I wrote this post and made this observation. For you to assume otherwise and ask me to 'chill out' was rude. Here's the phone number for Sunrise, you can call them for the rest of the week (I'll be busy 'chilling out')... 954-572-2286.

:wavey:

They should have started matches at 10 every day. I'm not sure why all those matches were crammed on court one, never been to that facility in Sunrise.

My point was that maybe there werent any other hard courts, as we really don't have many of them down here aside from tournament sites.

I think if Beck plays his best tennis there is no way that Gambill has a chance, however i am still shocked by Beck's disastrous 1 st round performance at Indian Wells. ´

Come on Beck!!!

Which would account for the match being a three-sets match.
And he reached the final of Nouméa, which is a good Challenger. And he beat Albert Costa at the AO.

Well, Phau has his best ranking ever, only one or two wins away from the top100 and Noumea/AusOpen are big parts of his points.

Well, just a remark: looks like in Sunrise they've got slow courts just like in Indian Wells. Big servers tend to choke or even loose while clay specialists are on top. I hope Cristophe will prove me right
