A Winter Sports Thread

Hi fellow atpworlders! :wavey:

I was just wondering if anyone here cares about skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping etc. Anyone at all? I just wanted to try this thread here first, because I love this place, but if it doesn't work out, I guess I'll have to move to wtaworld, where a thread like this already exists. ;)

Btw, women's Giant Slalom starts today in Park City. :D

I love winter sports . Adam Małysz in Poland is like ronaldo in Brazil or Micheal Schumacher in Gemany .

I like biathlon - the best winter sport , everything is changing there in the seconds .

I hope someone will stop this year Austrian in Men Alpine Skiing .

Good luck to Spela Pretnar and Jure Kosir :D

Hi Wojtek and Mrs. B! :wavey:

Good to see you here! :) I love biathlon too, Wojtek. But unfortunately, my two faves among women, Magdalena Frosberg and Liv-Grete Poiree are not competing. One is retired and the other is with child. I still have the men though, and truthfully, men are more interesting to me than women in all winter sports. :o That's why I started a thread here as well. ;) On the wtaworld, people seem to care more about women. Go Raphael!

Thanks for the good luck to my countrymen. :) Jure is definitely one of my faves and Spela is my namesake. ;)

My main fave is Bode Miller though. A love his crazy style, even though it makes my heart race a mile a minute. He makes me so nervous. :o I think he has a good chance to be a dominant force in skiing. But he just had a minor operation on his knee. He intends to compete in tomorrow's Giant Slalom though. :) Get well soon darling!

Good luck to Adam! :D

Good luck to Simon Amman too! :D I just love that kid. He does look like Harry Potter.

Of course, good luck to my faves Martin Schmitt and Sven Hannawald, who are/were injured as well. Most of my faves seem to be injured.

Mario Matt (the only Austrian among my faves) is likely to miss the greater part of the season due to an inflammation of the shoulder.

Oh and the man I just adore is Thomas Alsgaard. :hearts: The tall Norwegian god. He was born just 3 days before me. :D And he fell off his bike during the summer when he participated in a bike race. He fractured some bones in his hand and missed a lot of the preparations and training.

Things are just not looking good for my faves all around. :(

Wojtek
11-21-2002, 11:49 AM
I also like Magdalena Frosberg and Pernilla Wiberg but they retired .

Would you guys object to posting a few pics? Seriously, some of us don't know very much about winter sports and would like to know who you're talking about (fairweather Olympic fans, I guess we are).

Hi TH! :wavey:

Welcome to my Fairy Winterland! :)

Yes, I just adore Norwegians. I always cheer for them in cross country skiing. But this particular Norwegian isn't blond. :o He's actually quite dark. I like my men tall and dark. This is him.

And my faves in biathlon are the King and Queen of Biathlon, the beautiful married couple, Raphael Poiree and Liv-Grete Poiree. He's French and she's Norwegian. Liv-Grete is expecting their first child in January and won't be competing this year.

Usually I'm not a big figure skating fan, and the last Winter Olympics only added to my frustration and hatred for the sport  But I used to like it, especially pairs skating because it was always so beautiful and romantic.

My favorite pairs skaters were EKaterina Gordeeva & Sergei Grinkov. I still remember when he died . . .

TennisHack

Well, Mrs. B, I didn't know much about what was going on after Sergei's death, when she more or less dropped out of the public eye. I found this at www.skatingsource.com and I must say, I was a bit surprised at the ending . . .

The story of two time Gold medalist, Ekaterina Gordeeva, is an example of strength, endurance, and hope. With a celebrated career in the world of pairs figure skating, she and Sergei Grinkov mesmerized audiences with their classic romantic style. Partners on and off of the ice, Gordeeva tragically became a widow and single mother at the tender age of 24. With courage and support from the skating community and fans, she returned to the ice to become an award winning singles skater, Stars On Ice performer, and author of two books.

She began skating with the Central Red Army Club in Moscow, Russia at the age of four, despite her father’s hopes that she would dance with the Bolshoi Ballet Company. Showing a great skating talent, but lacking in jumps, a coach teamed her with 15-year-old Sergei Grinkov in 1982. Together, they were a love story on ice, winning the 1988 and 1994 Winter Olympics and four World Championships. A favorite of the Stars On Ice cast, they enjoyed a successful professional career as well.

Tragedy struck in 1995 when Grinkov died of a heart attack while rehearsing for the upcoming Stars On Ice season. Depressed and facing life alone as a single mother, her love of skating and her daughter provided the purposes to carry on. In 1996 when many friends and figure skating associates organized a tribute for Grinkov, Gordeeva shocked them by announcing that she would skate in the tribute. Choreographer, Marina Zueva, created a program for Gordeeva to the music of Mahler. She returned to the ice skating alone for the first time in her husband’s tribute, Sergei Grinkov: Celebration of a Life. Encouraged by the acceptance of her skating, she rejoined Stars On Ice and began touring with them as a singles skater.

A model for widows and single women starting over, Gordeeva wrote My Sergei: A Love Story, chronicling her life with Grinkov. The book was made into a television special in which Gordeeva starred in 1998. She followed up her writing success with the book A Letter For Daria in 1998. She became a spokesperson for Target Stores in 1997 and launched two fragrance lines, “Katia” and “Katia Sport”. In 1999, she joined Scott Hamilton, Amy Grant, and Tiger Woods who participated in the opening of Target House in Memphis, Tennessee. Gordeeva dedicated “Sergei’s Garden” at the house in memory of her late husband.

Recently, Gordeeva started a new chapter of her life. Finding love again with Men's Olympic Champion, Ilia Kulik, she gave birth to another daughter, Elizaveta Ilinicha, on June 15, 2001. She has also moved from Connecticut to Los Angeles.

Lee
11-22-2002, 04:20 PM
One thing about skiing is there are always lots of freak occurance. Almost any skier can win a title one day although the really good one will come up in a long run.

It still amaze me the female Canadian skier managed to win a gold medal in 1992 Olympic. I can't even remember her name but she has a 'Lee' in her name.:)

Layla
11-22-2002, 04:22 PM
Lol, I should hope not TH. The event is in Park City, Utah so I don't think a conspiracy against a US skier is applicable. But anything's possible. ;)

Yeah, Bode was the saving grace of American skiing. Him and Kristina Koznick (also one of my faves), but she's better in Slalom as is Bode.

On the one hand, I'm very happy that she's managed to move on with her life, and even find a person to share it with :) Finding love twice in a lifetime is very, very difficult, especially when you are living with the memory of your greatest love.

On the other hand, I'm still a bit surprised. At the beginning of her book, she was talking about how she felt losing Sergei was her punishment for having an "easy life" :( I just thought she was going to raise Daria by herself and live with her memories.

I guess if I had known when it actually happened I wouldn't be quite as shocked as I am. So I'm torn between being happy for her and being a bit angry. I'm sure the latter will go away soon enough :)

Today's men's cross-country race was a huge disappointment.

No Scandinavians on the podium!

My faves Alsgaard and Estil finished 16th and 24th respectively. http://www.jordysworld.de/emoticons/trau21.gif

The big names really underperformed today. :( I hope they pick up their form soon.

havent you heard? the norwegian camp is having a bit problem now..... after some drugs accusations and shit. But the ppl who have accused the norwegians for doping have taken their accusations back. but like Thomas Alsgaard said; the damage is already done.
no the whole world think the norwegians have cheated....

Well, I think it's normal to make drastic statements in times of grief. How many times has someone said "I'll never love again" or something like that when they've broken up, and then met someone else a week later?

btw, it hasn't been confirmed, but it's very likely that Ilia and Katia have gotten married.

The two cross-country relays have just finished. I'm very happy about the women's results, because Norway won! :bounce:

Final standings of the women's 4x5 km relay:

1) NORWAY 53:52.9
2) GERMANY +45.5
3) ITALY +57.5

4) Russia +57.7
5) Finland +1:06.2
6) Russia II +1:12.2
7) Belarus +2:14.4
8) Sweden +2:18.3
9) JPN/NOR +2:28.1
10) Kazakhstan +2:37.6
11) ITA/SUI +3:01.2
12) FIN/JPN +3:05
13) Czech Republic +3:14.4
14) Switzerland +3:43.2
15) Japan +3:53.6
16) RUS/KAZ/POL +4:00.2
17) Sweden II +4:00.9

The men's relay was very exiting (it always is) with three skiiers racing towards the finish line together (Norway, Italy and Germany). Sadly, Thomas Alsgaard (Norway, and my number one fave :hearts: ) finished second behind Italy's Cristian Zorzi by a mere 0.1 second.   In the legendary Olympic relay in Salt Lake City the situation was reversed and Thomas won by the same margin. But at that time, they were alone in the fight and this time the German skiier (Sommerfeldt) wouldn't let Thomas pass him and caused him problems, which is why Thomas lost too much time in the end.

Final standings of the men's 4x10 km relay:

1) ITALY
2) NORWAY +0.1
3) GERMANY +2.3

4) Sweden +44.9
5) Russia +1:24.2
6) Italy II +1:38

7) Finland +1:43
8) Kazakhstan
9) Italy III
10) Sweden II
11) France
12) Russia II
13) Japan
14) Sweden III
15) Austria
16) Switzerland

Kostelic confirms with Park City feat

Croatia's 20-year-old triple Olympic champion Janica Kostelic comfortably cruised to her first victory of the season in an Alpine skiing World Cup slalom race in Park City on Saturday. France's Christel Pascal finished second and Sabine Egger of Austria took third.

Kostelic, displaying the same dazzling form that saw her capture the overall World Cup two seasons ago, clocked an overall time of one minute 39.61 seconds, beating Pascal by a remarkable 0.70 seconds and Egger by 1.14 seconds.

The Croatian superstar, keen to recapture the World Cup after injury and multiple knee surgeries kept from shining last season, performed convincingly in the same resort that saw her win an unprecedented four Olympic medals in February.

Collecting the 14th World Cup victory of her young career – her 12th in the slalom -- Kostelic told eurosport.com on Tuesday that she still considers herself far from peak fitness following a recent appendix operation.

"There were some complications and the wounds were open...I had to stay in bed for three weeks and I lost a lot of training time," she said.

Nearly two years after Kostelic outclassed her competitors to win World Cup crystal globes in both the slalom and overall disciplines as a 19-year-old, the young Croat is clearly back to her winning ways.

Finishing the 2001-2002 season with only one World Cup race victory to her name - at the World Cup finals in Flachau in March, fresh off her Olympic triumphs - Kostelic is progressively returning to top form. The 20-year-old continually proves that nothing can stop her, not sickness nor injury, and when she's fit, her rivals can't stop her either.

Rounding out the top five in Park City were defending World Cup slalom champion Laure Pequegnot of France (1:40.79) and Marlies Schild of Austria (1:41.01), fourth and fifth respectively.

The Alpine skiing World Cup in Park City finishes on Sunday with the men's slalom. The first run begins at 18.00cet and the second is set for 21.00cet LIVE on eurosport.com!

Depends how will stand that fall on training . Luckily wasn't a big deal and everything finished OK . But it won't be the first time that with some minor detail everything comes wrong for him. He is taking some things much more personally than some others and isn't one of those guys who will easily go over that what could have happened in that fall . He isn't like Miller to forget easily and go on the head next time also . Hopefully he wins

Hirscher can unfortunately

No way . Hirscher is amazing in slalom and GS but can't believe he'll keep the same level till the end of the season and just with skiing two discipline you can't afford yourself to have few bad races . He has to start to ski at least super combines to have a chance of winning overall WC in future years . Even great Tomba barely won one big crystal globe with skiing just two disciplines

Ivica is currently living only on his slalom and combination points so it's not like he has a big advantage there.
What you said about if Hirscher will keep his form until the end, we can't know that of course, but if he does IMO he should take the title.
(Of course I hope Ivica will take it :) )
