This tournament really should not have night matches. It is truly brutal for both fans and players.

I really feel for those poor players and fans suffering in 60 degree weather!

Tricky_Forehand
02-20-2005, 10:49 PM
I agree. Especially with the risk of rain. Matches should be played with the possibility of getting them done and respect to the players. If Scottsdale winter is anything like Palmdale winter and 7 PM in February...BRRRRRRRR

Leena, it's nowhere near 60 at night in Scottsdale at this time. They'll be lucky if it's 60 at the warmest time of the day. Last year, I went to a night match and it was in the upper 40s at best (plus it was really dry desert climate with an even colder dry breeze). It was really bad. My mom and I couldn't bear to stay for the doubles match after, we were dying. And we're people from cold climates, and my mom is one of those people who's always hot even if it's like 0 degrees, and even she was freezing.

Plus it's not fair to the players. That's COLD. Andy had back troubles last year and he kept saying that the night matches were preventing him from loosening up, but that they wouldn't schedule him during the day. Plus they have enough courts to play on, they don't need to have night matches.

Ahh...Scottsdale is warm compared to it's Cali desert neighbor

Seriously, this is when the tourney organizers see $$$ and don't give a crap about the guys who have to play. Hello?! The pros can get colds too.

<Leena> Not all of the pros are millionaires. *Getting off soapbox now* :D

Not that as much as muscle problems. In the one match I Saw, both players had to call out the trainer to get stuff worked on. And it wasn't a particularly tough or long match and neither player had problems earlier in the week (though, now that I think of it, it was their second match in the same day...maybe I should shut up now lol)...

anyway, there's still no need for night matches here. It could be even worse for the fans than it is for the players. At least they get to run around.

Oh goddess, Deb, you are scaring me. Seriously. JMG has enough problems getting his legs warmed up sometimes. Even if he prefers night matches and lives in a place with snow on the ground right now, I don't like the idea of this match (or the fact that I don't think he left Memphis until Sunday). Perhaps I should do a pagan moon dance for him or something

Sorry, Fee, don't mean to worry you :( He's popular in Scottsdale, I'm sure he'll do ok. I remember last yea both he and Andy had to call the trainer during their match... it was soooo cold. I think Jan-Mike got his leg rubbed down or something with the warming stuff, but I don't remember for sure. I think that's why Andy warmed up RIGHT before his match, I think his normal thing is a couple hours before (at least, that's what he did in Houston where it WAS in the 60s at night lol). Yea...

why'd he stay in Memphis so long?

With this weather forecast...might have another double whammy. But cold & muscles don't go very well together either.

This is a record that I agree with Leena.

I watched CFL (the Canadian equivalent of NFL) in below freezing weather for more than 3 hours with another 30,000 fans freezing our butts out there watching, yes, professional football players running on frozen artificial turf freezing their butts out but we had great time. btw, I was watching Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia (a Southern Californian) in those matches.

Well last year, there weren't even TV cameras in the stadium until Thursday, That's when I remember seeing TTC people in the media booth.

This is a REALLY small tourney, guys. Everything's done on volunteer (I know most tourneys are, but this one seemed especially so), so try to cut them a *little* slack. It'd be nice if they had a better website, but after seeing the facilities they have there, I'm surprised they have a website at all. The tournament offices are in transportable trailers, I mean, yeah...part of the reason why I had such a good time there is because it is small and intimate, but there are always drawbacks to that.

i understand what your saying, its just really really frustrating. plus its really not that hard to put a scoreboard on the site. it only needs 1 person, even if its only game by game or something its better than nothing. i dont know how it works, like if the atp subsidizes some tournaments but surely they should make it requirements for every tournament to have a website which provides:

1. Draw
2. Order of play
3. Live scores

Anything else is a bonus, like pictures and interviews etc

Deboogle!.
02-21-2005, 05:13 PM
I agree that the ATP Should provide it for all tourneys. I don't understand why they don't provide the stuff, I agree that it would only take 1 person, but I guess they don't. I had read rumors on here at the end of last season that the ATP WAS going to require each tourney to have live scores, but I guess not.

Sure I'd be glad to. There are two courts that are set up for competition at Scottsdale (they could probably do matches on another one if they HAD to). The clubhouse is a great court with open seating up one of the sides, so only a couple hundred people can watch. It's right behind the main stadium (which is more like a bowl in the ground with a couple thousand seats, not really a stadium) so it's just a smaller court within the same venue, at the same place, etc. Clubhouse is just the name of the court because the actual clubhouse building with the shop and restrooms and stuff is right behind it. I'm not sure if this is what you were looking for...

did the Salzenstein match begin?

About Gio, it's taken him a while but he's definitely playing well. I think he's even higher ranked than Nico still. I saw him play at a couple of Challengers and he's definitely improved his mental game as well as his shots.

Last update on here was that Lars was in the 3rd so Alex & Salzenstein hasn't started. As soon as they have, I'll probably join in bugging the tourney to get Alex's score :).

that I agree with but Gio's return game is what has gotten him those wins lately. he looks very comfortable. Wesley will recover. Once you get down in these American tournaments, it's tough to get back on track mentally.

Debs, it's exactly what I'm looking for :D And you seem to always know what I'm looking for ;) Thanks!

Yes, Alex is on the worst streak he has had since turning professional but if he can remember how well he matches up against Salzenstein this shouldn't be a problem. Believe me, I wish I was there to yell the encouragement.

I think salzenstein is serving...cause if Alex broke in the second that means he was broken twice in the first, and i don't think that is possible :)

its possible but i agree, the likelihood is salzenstein served first and won the 1st set with 1 break....then boggy is serving 1st in the 2nd set. cheers for the updates mate, keep them up if possible

she said alex was..

You must have said something differently than me. I called at 12:15 to get an update but was only told he was on court. Just called 5 minutes ago and was told he lost the 1st 3-6 and to call back in 30 minutes.

I just know he can do this in 3!!! I only fear that he's letting the last 5 results creep into his head

unless something DRASTIC happened from last year - it's not a desk, it's a portable trailer set up just for the tourney with very minimal provisions. Moreover, where it's set up is nowhere near the courts, so there'd be no way for them to know the score unless they physically went and looked at the scoreboards. That'd take probably several minutes each time someone called.

They should have radios. Even at the Challenger level there's almost always someone with a radio standing around

I don't expressly recall people standing around with radios, but then again I wasn't paying attention and I was more concerned with enjoying myself seeing live tennis than noticing whether the sweet elderly volunteers were holding radios.
