we want that thread from WTA world dragged onto here

as he is winning everything we need to put him off

If only Saint Carlos Moya could play him.

Goonergal
07-17-2002, 10:50 AM
Saint Carlos :o as you so put him is No match for the potato !You know he will dominate the hardcourt season just like the grass :p Sorry Eggy Worldwide Potato domination is set to continue ;) :bounce:

TheBoiledEgg

Bring on the hard courts.......... hope Tommy Boy can peel him too :)

Marat, Tommy, Moya are the chief potato peelers

Goonergal

Hehehehe-Just remember the potato went on a 23 match winning streak on Hardcourts-I'll put money on him doing it again :D Sorry but I think your peelers are already blunt ;)

Nimi

TheBoiledEgg
07-17-2002, 11:00 AM
we will sue the potato for sabotage

this behavior is not acceptable.

What we need is more flowers on every court as well.

nice girls holding balls in one hand and flowers in other, so when he asks for a ball they throw him a flower instead ;)

07-18-2002, 03:57 AM
Actually I don't know but I'm from the Dominican Republic and until someone else comes along Dominican-Americans are for LLeyton and Nicolas "Nico" Lapenti and Marat and Guga and Andre and JCF

Anyway love the site, love the thread, love all things LLeyton

I think the peeler fans might have it backward. Wishing LLeyton would lose only helps him win ;) You might want to consider wishing him good luck instead but he is so good it doesn't really matter anyway. :bounce:

I think only Roger has beaten him on hardcourts in the last 12 months:) That was in Miami after LLey had played a tough 3setter against Marat. Let's just say it won't happen again.;)

When I checked at the end of last year, the only active men who had played Hewitt more than once with a winning record over him were Escude and Corretja :o

So all hail Escude and Corretja ;)

Those stats may have changed, as I haven't checked.

Static: i'm with you. the truth is that the Chicken is probably playing the best tennis of his life. he was very aggressive and controlled and i really found myself admiring his game during lapses of focus ;) ;) all the more reason why David's win is even sweeter however. in fact most of these guys are playing terrific tennis. there is such depth on the ATP Tour! imagine the Lizard comes within a hair-s breath of beating Haas and loses bec of a double-fault!! just incredible!  i am enjoying Toronto. ;)

TheBoiledEgg
08-05-2002, 04:01 AM
now lets hope we can enjoy Cincinatti as well

does anyone hold out any hope for our 1st Peeler ???

Robby Ginepri is our 1st contender and even i doubt think he's got hope

come on you peelers :D

TennisHack
08-05-2002, 04:37 AM
I don't know about Robby Ginepri's ability to peel, he seems like one of the weaker qualifiers to make it. But Jonas Bjorkman could give him a run in the second round.

Static
08-05-2002, 04:47 AM
I can't believe Robby beat Paradorn, he might be a tought one for Lleyton :o I bet you peelers would've loved it if Lleyton got to play Scud in the first round, he'd be a pretty good peeler. Instead Fabrice has to play him :(

Jonas might not do so well against Sanguinetti, I've seen Davide play and he can be very dangerous!

TennisHack
08-05-2002, 04:59 AM
Static, I think Robby might bow to the pressure of the Potato. I would have LOVED for Lleyton to draw Scud! Nothing like another first round loss ::evil smile::

Yeah, Sanguinetti can be tough, but I think whoever wins that match will be tough for Lleyton.

Static
08-05-2002, 05:05 AM

Eggy, Robby did it all himself. Hewitt only had to win 10 or so points himself, everything else was a Ginepri unforced error.

Double bagel, youch! Sanguinetti needs to take care of that.

The match was so bad it was funny.

Jarkko will break that little bagel streak. :fiery:

I don't know what his peeling potential is. He's a lefty, so that might help; he was a good serve and good groundies. I haven't seen him play since RG so I don't remember his game exactly.

Conspiracy theory: Hewitt paid off the foot fault judges to call as many as they could against Jarkko. No way a player gets six in the match.

At any rate, Jarkko has good peeling potential. Unfortunately the Potato found his game in the second set, but Jarkko didn't just give him the match. That big lefty serve and his two handed backhand gave the Potato fits the whole match, and he can come in and knock off volleys as well. If they ever draw each other again, and Jarkko doesn't have such a tough time with his previous matches, I think Jarkko could pull it off.

 to a potential!

I'm pretty sure it has to do with the Davis Cup against Russian in 99 (?) When Kafelnikov called the surface that they had to play on in Australia, a "potato field".

SO Hewitt is a Potato :D

The fact that his head is potato like is just a pleasant coincidence ;)

Jarkko is young yet, and it was his first time against the Potato. But unlike certain American players :D, he came out and played his game and for awhile had Potato teetering on the edge.

He also had some tough first rounds, and he did slay a seed, so I think he did well for his first outing in Cincy.

Just wanted to note that Fernando has such strong groundstrokes, he's pushed Hewitt way back to return them. He's making the Potato look like a claycourter ;) trying to return on a hard court.

Gonzo has lovely peeling potential, and he would have done it but he just completely deflated in the last set of the match. His groundies are so hard they push Hewitt way back, 10 or 12 ft behind the baseline. His serve is phenomenal. If his energy is there, he can whip the Potato easily.

Gonzalez, Nieminen . . . nice to know there are some good peelers coming up :)

Men's Match of the Day

Cincinnati - Final
Carlos Moya (16) def. Lleyton Hewitt (1) 7-5 7-6(7-5)

There is a moment in every match when things grow tight, when everything is on the line. These are the moments Lleyton Hewitt lives for. For much of the match, he may be down. His opponent may be controlling most of the points. But come the big moment that shapes the match, Hewitt is almost sure to be in control.

He showed it in the semifinal against Fernando Gonzalez. In the second set, Gonzalez had a chance to break; Hewitt held. Still, Gonzalez looked fine; he was winning on serve. Then -- a brief rough patch. Break point Hewitt. And Hewitt won that point. And the game, and the set, and the match.

Somehow, that gift didn't seem to be with him in the final. Could Hewitt have been tired? After a rain delay at 4-4 in the first, he lost the first set. In the second, he seemed to be in Hewitt Mode as he got up a break -- but then gave it back. The set went to a tiebreak -- and once again, it was Moya taking charge and Hewitt scrambling to get back. And, finally, he failed.

This breaks a streak of ten straight finals won by Hewitt. It doesn't threaten his ranking; he's still #1 in the Entry Rankings, and still on top in the Race. But the aura of invincibility seems to have faded somehow.

For Moya, this is big. He's been winning right and left on clay, but the results on other surfaces hadn't followed. With three clay titles this year, plus the final at Monte Carlo, he was set on dirt. Now he's shown that he can still do it on hardcourts. That's significant, because until now, he had only one hardcourt title (Long Island 1997), and his record at big hardcourt events, other than an Indian Wells final in 1999, was pretty poor. Moya is up to #10 in the rankings, and #5 in the Race. And, even more interesting, we've had two clay players (Canas and Moya) win the last two hardcourt Masters Series. :D :) :D

Rusedski passes his Hewitt test in style

Richard Jago in Indianapolis
Saturday August 17, 2002
The Guardian

Greg Rusedski's improbable 7-6, 6-4 win over Lleyton Hewitt, which ranked as his best success for four years and carried him to the quarter- finals of the RCA Championships, went some way to answering those doubters who said he could never be the same player again.

Rusedski still has vulnerabilities he did not have before the back injury which threatened to end his career but this was a spectacular all-round performance by a man who has been struggling to convince people all year that he is almost back to what he was. Some will remain unconvinced, questioning how genuine the win was.

"When you beat him, he never beats himself, so you know you are playing good tennis," Rusedski said. "He's disappointed. Not so disappointed, because he won Wimbledon and winning at the US Open is where it is at for him now. But he wanted to win this, no question."

Anyone who doubted this should have seen Hewitt's reaction. After losing the first set he slashed a ball in irritation at the scoreboard. The crowd were silent, as if disbelieving their eyes, but when Hewitt did it again in the final game, causing the ball to rebound with a loud thwack, some of them jeered and whistled him.

Rusedski had just recovered from 0-30 with a 138mph ace. It was at least one gear faster than anything he had served previously, must have caught the outer edge of the line and Hewitt's look was that of someone who had just spilled his guts on the court without anyone noticing.

That more or less did happen when, six points later, Rusedski thrust himself into overdrive again, concluding the match with a trumpeting ace measuring 136mph.

It was his best win and the first by a Briton over a Wimbledon champion since Rusedski beat Pete Sampras in the final of the Masters Series indoor event in Paris four years ago. It also gave him wins over the world's two top players in successive weeks.

"I wanted this match," said Rusedski. "After winning the first round I said I wanted to play Hewitt because that would be a barometer of how I am playing. It's what I wanted for my preparation for the US Open. I got my test." It was left to others to add that he had passed.

This was arguably a better all-round performance than in his defeat of Sampras. Remarkably Rusedski was sometimes able to survive by trading ground strokes from the back, Hewitt's area of strength. But he also chose his moments well to chip and charge and served the best he has for a long time.

Crucially there were no double faults. The new remodelled action, and the older, higher one are beginning to integrate. In his one crisis, at 0-40 early in the second set, Rusedski produced an ace and two volley winners. The serve is a little less invulnerable than it was and Rusedski does not appear to get up for the smashes so well but he is better from the baseline and he knows more about himself as well as the game.

It meant that one break was enough to win him the match. The first set depended on a tie-break in which Rusedski got two early mini-breaks and the second set upon the capture of Hewitt's serve at 4-4. With four of the top five seeds now out - the others being Marit Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Tim Henman - a great door has been opened to the title.

Besides the fact that it's posted in at least two other active threads in GM, I believe there's an explanation in this thread. Were you just not patient enough to read it?

He is called Potato because

#1 His head looks like a potato.

#2 When Russia played Australia in Davis Cup a few years ago, Kafelnikov called the surface they were playing on "a potato field" because it was so pockmarked and uneven.
