Russia played in Australia for a Davis Cup tie in 1999, on what kafelnikov refered to as "a potato feild" - refering to it's poor quality.

Hewitt won both his live singles rubbers - a potato was born :D

Is anyone watching this?

NOw i'm not rooting for Hewitt or anything - but this is NOT Hewittesque - is something wrong with him?

I refer to his stats, NOT the scores, as I am NOT indicating Costa can't give him a match!

vaiva
11-12-2002, 12:35 PM
Master Potato Peelers must be rolling on the floor seeing the potato play like this

martinatreue
11-12-2002, 12:37 PM
ALBERT!!!! :bounce: :D

I hate Mal and Patrick. They act like Al Costa had no chance of even winning GAMES against Lleyton. I mean, puhleez, this man won the FRENCH OPEN and has already taken a set off of Lleyton earlier this year. I am sick of the disrespect. :(

vaiva
11-12-2002, 12:38 PM

OMG! ALBERT PLAYED SOME UNBELIEVABLE SHOTS!!!! He really is so beautiful to watch cuz his game just flows even when he is hitting big flat shots it looks so graceful. Win or lose here he has shown that he can play on hard courts!!!!

vaiva
11-12-2002, 12:51 PM
did the potato go off the boil a little?

vamos costa, sharpen the peeler and start your job !!

TheBoiledEgg

3-1, Costa to serve

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2002, 12:56 PM
Didn't everyone say Albert is useless indoors ? :D

On the other hand, amazing what they call 'indoors' nowadays. The court is slow as hell.

Chloe le Bopper
11-12-2002, 12:58 PM
Perhaps people called Costa useless indoors because it took him untill 2000 to WIN a match indoors.

Not to mention that most players here have won more in one season that Costa has in his carreer (yes, even Ferrero).

It is not like they had to basis to say such things.

Chloe le Bopper
11-12-2002, 12:58 PM
And do I hear that the court is clow? EGGCELLENT :D

martinatreue
11-12-2002, 01:01 PM
Well I don't think that there is some law that INDOORS has to be a fast surface. From what the announcers are saying it's middle paced. It's just that both players use quite a bit of topspin at times. :) Also the criticism of Al has nothing to do with it being INDOORS. They think he cannot play on hardcourts which is silly because he has had quite good results at the US Open and in Australia last year where he reached the quarterfinals. :)

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:01 PM
And Plus Costa has 0 indoor wins in 2002

Chloe le Bopper
11-12-2002, 01:06 PM

hmmm...MY critism of Costa came from his indoors performance :) I have never suggested he can't play on hardcourts. In fact I don't have an explanation for his pitiful indoors record, I just know it exists.

I suppose you are refering to the commentators thoughts?

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2002, 01:08 PM
Hey, I would have said the same about Albert before this match. :)

It's probably that, when he plays in a 64-draw indoor event, he knows he is very unlikely to win the whole thing so he isn't that motivated.
For this one, he is, of course. When you are there, you want to do well. Has there ever been a player who totally sucked at the Masters ?

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:10 PM
berasategui in 1994
he was pulverized in all 3 matches

Costa last time he was there

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2002, 01:12 PM
Oh. :o

Then maybe Albert's performance is just an accident. :o

martinatreue
11-12-2002, 01:12 PM
Yeah I am talking about the commentators. I really don't think that players who are clay court experts but who do well on outdoor hardcourts will necessarily be bad players indoors. It could just be that it helps other guys' serves more than his but fundamentally it's still a hard court. Even if he has not done well indoors in the past I feel like if you have had good results on hard courts outdoors then you should at some point be able to do okay indoors. And playing this well against hewitt is just impressive considering how little the commentators expected of him.

Chloe le Bopper
11-12-2002, 01:13 PM
Has there ever been a player who totally sucked at the Masters ?

Magnus Norman 2000
Gustavo Kuerten 2001
Partick Rafter 2001

King Aaron
11-12-2002, 01:13 PM
:o Costa took a set?!

Chloe le Bopper
11-12-2002, 01:14 PM
I might point out that Guga and Rafter were both injured. Norman had surgery not long after his performance.

How is the commentators' expectations related to the level of play?

The level of play in recent tournaments brings the expectations of the commentators.

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:17 PM
Mecir in 1987
Chang in 1989
Andrez Gomez & Emilio Sanchez lost all 3 in 1990
Novacek in 1991
Korda in 1992
Kucera in 1998 (Costa only played 2 in 1998 and then ran home)
Lapentti in 1999
Norman in 2000
Kuerten and Rafter in 2001

martinatreue
11-12-2002, 01:18 PM
it's impressive since nobody thought he had a chance of winning a set. the commentators are annoying but they do know something about tennis. ;)

Also why the  , zosse?

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:19 PM
Potato won 6-2 4-6 6-3

at least Costa won a set which good be crucial to Marat :)

vaiva

ugly potato rolls on

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:21 PM
Also Muster qualified 5 times and only played 5 matches there and didn't win any.

KarstenBraasch#1
11-12-2002, 01:25 PM
Stich also lost all 3 matches (1991 ?). He was pissed that Becker got all the cheering. :D

But just because you lost all 3 doesn't necessarily mean that you totally sucked. I was rather looking for players who didn't even try (probably Berasategui).

TheBoiledEgg
11-12-2002, 01:55 PM
all results are on the TMS site
and i put them on this board on the Blast from Past section

joanbalcells
11-12-2002, 02:41 PM
give albert credit please. he's fighting and held his own against the much more favoured Hewitt. Al's a clay court expert as we know. It's not his fault that (a) he qualified and (b) the tournament is held indoors. If it were held on clay, Al would most probably have beaten Hewitt. But it's not clay, so give him credit for making a match of it at least.

The championships has been held indoors for as long as I remember, and the players which "totally sucked" just don't have games suited to fast surfaces (it used to be faster carpet). It's not their fault.

Becker, Sampras, Rafter, Ivanisevic and Stich would all have struggled if the surface had been slower, whereas Berasategui and Costa would have excelled.

Even when the court is indoors, it's still faster than the same court outdoors because the pressure on the ball is greater, and there's no wind.

Jorge
11-13-2002, 01:45 AM
Safin and Ferrero have lost in straight sets, Costa has fight three agaisnt the number 1 and favorite to win the tournament, that's all that i need to say about it ;)
