The most boring match you've ever watched til the end

Tennis fans are courageous and dedicated people, and sometimes, for a reason or another, they endure the penibility of a boring match. Some say boom-boom fast surface matches are boring, other clay never-ending rallies...
My pick would be a Roddick-Ancic R16 in Queens in 2004. Despite great players, teh atmosphere in the stadium was so sleepy, and no rally whatsoever... Yawn
Yours ?

adeegee makes a very good suggestion with Srichaphan vs Di Mauro from Rome last year, that was quite possibly the worst quality match of the year but it still had a peculiar fascination for me, just to see someone hopelessly inept on clay against someone hopelessly out of their depth on any surface. The first set in particular was the most mind-numbingly bad tennis, lasting well over an hour, which Srichaphan won because he played slightly less terribly in the tiebreak - but the difference was marginal.

But my vote for most boring match goes to one from that same event. Another hapless Italian wildcard, the entertainingly named Massim Dell'Acqua. And up against him, the one, the only, the inimitable genius that is El Vampiro. Here is a man who can play a set lasting nigh on an hour and a half, lose it 11-9 in the tiebreak, and still come back for two hours more of the same. Here is a man who blows an early break in the second set, fails to serve it out, hangs on in there and then grunts and grinds his way agonisingly into a second set victory, 7-5. Here is a man who keeps playing terrible shots on his opponent's serve for most of the final set, but always clings on to his own delivery and stays ahead, before finally rallying Dell'Acqua into the ground with another set of interminable exchanges, ending in horrible errors from the Italian, that finally conclude the match. 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 was the final score: 3 hours and 20 minutes of joyful and creative tennis from the masterful Raccoon. Laugh? I nearly cried.

It may have been entertaining for you, Lurker, but it was doubly entertaining for me watching it on an interactive BBC channel with commentary from Pat Cash and British tour legend Andrew Castle, evidently marvelling over the classic display of grass-court tennis they were witnessing from both men. I think at one point Cash saw the graphic flashed up on the screen saying "Nalbandian serve-volley 6%" and said with admiration, "Not bad in a little over 4 hours!" It was a good contest, but annoying for me since I thought Henman had no chance against nemesis Nalby even at Wimbledon, and Kucera did have the lead in both the fourth and fifth sets before completely forgetting how to serve, let alone hold serve.

most boring match for me would be a womens match between Lisa Raymond and Ludmill cant remember her surname, 1st round of RG this year. It was 60 50 to Ludmilla - when we joined it (Mariano Zabaleta and Stephane Robert were next on that court - and it was going to be standing room only (Stephane Robert being French). Lets just say.... Lisa Raymond won the match... and noone could move as they would lose their seats. Other captive people during this match include Mariano's Girlfriend and his mother.

watching some of the dirtballers play their style of tennis on a hardcourt can sometimes be tedious, but just as i'm about to lapse into torpor, one of them would play a sweet dropshot and the other would go scrambling to the net to play one back, and next thing you know i'm awake again ;)

The worst ones in my opinion are the ones you expect to be really good but then let you down.

For example, at the Australian Open this year (one of the few tournaments I get to watch), Nadal d. C.Rochus was bad but I expected that. However, I was hoping that Federer v. del Potro would be great and it so painful so my point goes to that match.

Any match involving Gilles Simon or Tommy Boredo

Saw those two play on clay (Bastad 2006 - it's televised here). Undoubtedly the most boring ATP match I ever watched. Simon d. Cilic TMS Canada last year is a close second. In both, few rallies went on for less than 20 shots, and nearly every single game went to multiple deuces.

The really awful WTA matches don't tend to qualify as boring; points end with crass errors and players get themselves broken to love well before you have time to find yourself bored. One of the few genuinely boring televised WTA matches I can remember is the endless A. Radwanska d. Cibulkova in Doha 2008. Live, I've seen a lot of horror shows at the Estoril Open qualies, but as I've said, those matches don't even qualify as boring. One of the worst I can remember was a MD match though. Makarova d. Czink this year. I was the only spectator in attendance during most of it. Neither player seemed to want to win. Czink threw away more than half a dozen service games with wild errors after a couple of shots at most. Makarova gave up on the match several times. During changeovers, the linespeople would comment on the matche's shiteousness.

Also, for all her craftyness and touch, Patty Schnyder in full moonballing mode has bored me senseless on a number of occasions.
