the draw (http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/ill/sports/m-tennis/auto_pdf/2012-13/misc_non_event/ncaa-m-singles-bracket.pdf)

Play begins tomorrow at 9 am eastern. Quick turnaround for the Virginia and UCLA players.

What jumps out immediately from the draw is Mitchell Frank getting drawn vs #1 Libietis in round 1

Brutal for Frank. Good luck to all the freshmen.

Isn't Mitchell Frank the real number 1? I would say brutal for Libietis. Sad to see no Canadians make the draw.

Frank has only lost 1 match this season. He played 3 for Virginia which is why he did not have the big ranked wins to get his ranking higher. He is definitely a top 8 player in the NCAA so it is really a terrible draw for Libietis. Big clash in styles between these two, it will be interesting.

Kobelt needs to watch out for Saba. Saba plays well vs players like Kobelt, usually can grind them down and get them moving around the court. The winner of that match likely gets Novikov, so a loaded section.

It will be interesting to see how Jenkins does vs Wagland just a few days after Wagland beat Jenkins in the team semifinal.

Giron played great in the team event, knocking off Kobelt and Domijan. Let's see what he can do vs the #5 seed Bogaerts.

Pasha vs King will be good.

I'll be there on the final day next Monday. I just so happen to be driving my brother down to Champaign Sunday night and discovered that's where the NCAAs are! $10 for men's and women's doubles and singles--what a deal.

I forgot all about Libietis' sprained ankle. I hope that he is okay to compete and that it doesn't bother him too much.

Extra motivation for the American players b/c of the USO wildcard: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/us-players-seeking-5th-straight-ncaa-tennis-title

Okay, I will be rooting for whomever has the best chance to win a round at the Open.

As I said yesterday, Libietis was the one that got the tough draw.

Frank upset by Andreas Mies of Auburn 4-6 6-0 6-2. Mies played a splendid 2nd and 3rd set. Used a ton of variety, slice and multiple drop shots as well as coming to net.

I will root for Kobelt now since all the Americans that I like lost.

Jenkins is still in it. He has a chance to go deep, especially if Andrews takes out Sarmiento.

Round of 16 results today so far:

Andreas Mies (Auburn) def Yannick Hanfmann (USC) 6-3 6-2
After beating Frank, Mies is feeling it now. He has great variety and it looks like he has finally controlled it in this tournament.

Sebastian Fanselow (Pepperdine) def Peter Kobelt (Ohio State) 6-4 6-2
Fanselow was to solid from the ground for Kobelt. Kobelt's big serve did not seem to bother Fanselow much.

Jarmere Jenkins (Virginia) def Ray Sarmiento (USC) 7-6(8) 2-6 6-4
Match of the day. Jenkins faced two break points at 4-4 in the 3rd but came up with some great volleys to save them. Two players hugged at the net after the match, good sportsmanship shown.

Soren Hess-Olsen (Texas) def Marcos Giron (UCLA) 3-6 6-3 6-2
Giron's hot run ends here. Hess-Olesen is making a surprising run here.

Blaz Rola (Ohio State) def Tsvetan Mihov (South Carolina) 6-3 6-2
Rola probably the best player in this field and he is playing very well.

Henrique Cunha (Duke) def Kyle McMorrow (Washington) 6-1 6-0
Cunha has only lost 2 games in the last two matches. Sets up a blockbuster match with Rola in the next round.

Smoke944

Rola vs. Cunha could really be the title match

05-24-2013, 07:44 PM
last two matches of the day finished:

Evan King (Michigan) def Andre Dome (Cal Poly) 6-3 6-4
King has only dropped 15 games in 3 matches here.

Japie de Klerk (Tulsa) def Alex Sarkissian (Pepperdine) 7-6(0) 6-7(3) 6-2
Sarkissian's cinderella run ends(was the 4th alternate, only got in due to a few withdrawals). de Klerk has found his game here.

41 Japie de Klerk

How do they decided on the rankings?

out_here_grindin
05-25-2013, 06:06 PM
Rankings are based on a fairly complicated formula that values best wins vs worse losses. The formula really gives a lot of clout to big wins. Cunha went undefeated in the dual season until losing to Novikov but stayed down at 9 because he did not have the amount of wins that others did. Like Bogaerts had several losses, like 5 or 6 but got higher than Cunha based on wins. I actually think the system is flawed in that way.

Rola is only that low because he did not play the fall events because he played futures. So he started the dual season in January unranked while other players had already accumulated a lot of points.

What is the probability of Jenkins winning the triple crown (team, singles, doubles)?

out_here_grindin
05-25-2013, 11:40 PM
He has a shot. I'm surprised he and Styslinger have made it this far. Jarmere's brother who played for Clemson said that Jarmere actually doesn't like playing with Styslinger.

Fanselow beat Jenkins last year in the team semifinals so Jenkins has his hands full there.

Rola is the favorite to win this thing now. De Klerk is the Cinderella man this year after knocking off King.

Rooting for Rola in the final now

Snowwy

Yeah, to me Rola, Cunha and King were ranked lower than I would have suspected.

out_here_grindin
05-26-2013, 11:05 PM
I wish the US Open would give Rola a wildcard if he won. He isn't American but he did chose an American university to attend and is ranked 297 in the ATP.

VamosHoracio
05-27-2013, 12:38 AM
They would only give it to an American?? I'm sorry but I think this is crazy, Blaz Rola has almost the ranking to play the qualies and still, just because he is from Slovenia, which has only Futures and maybe a Challenger here and there.
