How far will Ivo Karlovic go?

I think he could be top 20 if he improved his backhand a bit.

I think he could be #1 if the ATP didn't cavort to those damned Spangentines by having 124234 clay tournaments during the year, and 4 grass ones.

Sadly, this is so very true...

Great post. :worship:

Yea, maybe top 20 but higher if there were more faster surfaced tournametns.

yes, Karlovic needs better shots from his backhand and forehand side when the ball is in play. He doesn't have the kind of baseline power and ability to apply pressure like PimPim has it for example. That's IMO the main reason why Karlovic isn't anywhere near where PimPim's ranking is. PimPim can clear shots, especially from his forehand side. And if you're not able to move PimPim around yourself, he will hammer shots on both sides. Karlovic can't, that's why top 30/40 is the maximum best I could see him doing with his current abilities (if he doesn'tt improve).

How far can a player with a world class serve and a club level game go?
I see some players are already reading his serve better then before so he wont be going into the top 40 anytime soon.

I prefer Neely's kinder way of speaking about Ivo's game. :p

but WyveN is right... Karlovic must have the worst baseline(return) game of all those who are more or less regularly in ATP tournaments these days.

I think only Wayne Arthurs could seriously challenge Ivo in the "who has the worst groundstrokes" poll that was going around a few months ago on MTF.

Not that I agree with everything being voted by the majority in polls here, but in this case there's not much to add... ;)

Ivo breaks at least once every tournament.

Ivo breaks at least once every tournament.

Not true as he usually loses first round and rarely breaks in a match he loses.

Ivo couldn't break my serve on clay.

True... Ivo has no baseline game... but I don't care :p He serves like a demon and volleys pretty well, and if guys with only baseline game can make the top ten, then guys with the other extreme should be as well.

He didn't exactly put up much of a challenge to Safin did he? If he didn't like I thought then he has a long way to go still...

I dont think he played Safin lately.

He has one of the best serves on the ATP and good volleys too. His forehand is decent when he is on, I've seen him crack some good baseline winners off that side. His backhand is effective on grass, as he has a slice which allows him to get to the net. But on other surfaces its ineffective, so i doubt he will be top 20. If he only improved his backhand, and developed a better return of serve then he could be top 20.

Top 50 at best with his current ability. He can't rally to save his life and he doesn't break serve very often. If he improved that then he could be a real menace.

Sure, he will always be a major threat with that serve but that is all he will ever be.

They ruin people's knees and shorten careers... no more hardcourt tournaments either. :p
