arv goes 31, but i think serving arrow isnt working too well as its staying on roko

54 - you guessed it anothr break - arvinds either serving or not serving for the match :)

Yes! :woohoo: :)

Well done Alex!

As you say, a win is a win. I wouldn't get too worried about it. Vacek is a former top 70 player and he isn't bad at breaking serve, especially when Bogo's isn't that strong. This is important win - points on the computer and a top 170 ranking looming on the horizon.

Bogo is now up to about 173. The next match is crucial. A ranking of around 166 looms if he can win it. Go get 'em Bogo! :)

Hi all, how does a speacial exception work? Is it if a player who is not seeded reaches the semi's? Its just in the belgrade tournament who will get the speacial exception if it is Parmar versus Bogdanovic??

Count Zero
02-11-2005, 03:55 PM
I think SE spots work that players who would nornmally have to qualify for an event but are unable to due to a good run in a event the week before will be offered the slots. I am not sure if a quater/semi final apperance would be good enough, more likely the finalists, other wise the slots will just go to the 2 next entered players. I am sure there are offical rules somewhere on it, Eg for this this tounie Vik got a SE after he won in poland. i dont think it has anything to do with seedings but may be wrong.

Special Exempt spots work where a player has reached at least the SF of an event (32 draw) where he was not expected to compile such a good run. That player has to have either signed up for qualifying in a tournament the following week, or not be signed up for the tournament at all. In the latter case, it would be a bit like handing out a WC, but in this case, the player has truly deserved the help of the tournament organisers in getting him into the draw, and so it is called a SE.

So, if there were to be a British clash in the SF of Belgrade, the chances are that Bogo would earn the SE spot into a tournament next week if he wanted it, because he would have beaten higher-ranked players than Arvind. If Arv were to win their clash, he might get the SE spot just by getting further into the tournament.

The chances are that both Brits will be keen to get the semis because I am sure that they aren't down for that huge challenger in France next week. It will surely be looking to hand a "card" to someone deserving from this week.

there are normally 2 se spots alavliabe right? so wouldnt both go to the 2 semi finaists on the bottom half of the draw here, either arvind/masson and al assuming he gets there? the other possibilities left are Waske, Norman both DE now and huburger who didnt enter.

even if Al loses in the QF's would there still be a that either he or anitehr lpsing quarter finalist gets one?

edit: just realised masson had a SE here - would that work for him ior against him in france? also do you think nationalities could come into it, with maybe belgium v british?

No - not always are 2 available. Often the tournament awards them because they don't have a particular preference as to who to give a WC to. For instance, in Rotterdam next week, Krajicek, the tournament organiser has 1 WC left to give but he doen't know who he wants to give it to. He might well use that as a SE instead. SE are only normally available where the tournament has no idea who they want to give WC to. Some tournaments are genreous admittedly in sidelining 1, or even 2 SE before they give out their 4 invitations. That is especially nice because they wouldn't be giving more than 2 WC to their own players. Mostly 1 SE is offered, if any.

Waske, Norman and Heuberger are all seeded and so are expected to have good runs - SE never normally got to seeded players no matter how well they do.

Losing q-finalists sometimes get SE spots, but normally they are QFists who have qualified/had a WC and have exceeded expectations by getting that far and knocking out a seed on the way.

Al would almosy definitely get a SE place if it was on offer next week if he were to win today. He would have beaten 2 good seeds and Jan Vacek who used to be top 100. Very impressive run. As it is, i expect him to beat Waske because he played a marathon yesterday, winning 5/7 7/6 7/6.

As Masson got a SE this week, I doubt he will be given one next week. The SE spots aren't normally awarded twice in as many weeks. Besides, Bogo's rn to the semis would be more impressive.

Undoubtedly, nationalities do come into it. Also travel comes into it too. The French challenger next week will not be awarding a SE spot to anyone playing in the States or Australia this week.

Therefore, if any SE spots are being offered by the French next week, they will go to a player(s) who has impressed in Belgrade. Bogo would therefore be competing with Djokovic and Elsner for a SE place - the place is likely to be awarded to the lowest ranked of those 3 that has done the best this week. Al has a high chance as he is the lowest ranked of them all. Certainly, the cut-off for the tournament was 193, 2 places lower than his ranking submitted from a good month ago.

Basically, Al needs to win today ;)

Basically, Al needs to win today ;)

what a long post, and i'm sorry to say what you wrote is not correct

here's the correct info taken from the ATP Rulebook :

SPECIAL EXEMPTS (SE)
A. Eligibility
Players may receive a Special Exempt into the main draw of the following week's
Tournament if they meet the criteria.
1) A player is eligible to receive a Special Exempt into the singles main draw of the following
week's Tournament, subject to the provisions of this Section, if he is unable to
compete in that qualifying competition because he is still competing on the date the
qualifying competition begins in another Qualified Event, and his current ranking as
of the date of the entry deadline would not have otherwise qualified him as a Direct
Acceptance on the original Acceptance List if he had entered. In addition, a player
who is still playing a match at 9 p.m. on Friday (the Qualifying competition sign-in deadline) is eligible to receive a Special Exempt only if he wins that match.
a) A qualified Event for special exempt to a ATP Masters Series Tournament is the singles
event of another ATP Masters Series or International Series Gold Tournament.
b) A Qualified Event for Special Exempt to an ATP International Series Gold
Tournament is the singles event of another International Series Gold or ATP
Masters Series Tournament.
c) A Qualified Event for Special Exempt to an ATP International Series Tournament is
the singles event of any International Series or ATP Masters Series Tournament.
d) A Qualified Event for Special Exempt to a Challenger Series Tournament is the singles
event of an ATP or Challenger Series Tournament within the same geographic
region, unless there are no Challengers in the same region the following week.
If there are no Challengers in the same region the following week, then a qualified
event would include all Challenger Series Events scheduled in the following week,
regardless of region. (Definition of Regions can be found in Exhibit X).
B. Number of Special Exempts
ATP Masters Series and International Series Gold Tournaments shall have one (1) Special
Exempt and International Series and Challenger Series Tournaments shall have two (2).
C. Selection of Special Exempt
1) If there are not sufficient Special Exempt places in the draw for applicants, the players
shall be selected according to their position on the most recent INDESIT ATP Entry
Ranking (Singles) List issued prior to the Tournament or by their Protected Ranking,
as long as their Protected Ranking would not have qualified them as a direct acceptance
had they entered. If their Protected Ranking would have placed them in the
main draw had they entered, then the Protected Ranking cannot be used to determine
a player's position on the Special Exempt list.
2) If the Special Exempt places are not needed before the beginning of the qualifying
competition, the Special Exempt places shall be filled by additional Direct
Acceptances selected from the original Acceptance List. Thus a player may be pulled
out of the qualifying before the first ball is hit and replaced by an alternate list player.
D. Special Exempt Process
1) A list of possible eligible players is compiled by the Player Services Department by
Wednesday/Thursday of the current week for the next week's tournaments.
2) The list of eligible players is supplied to the Supervisors where the players are competing.
The Supervisors need to contact each player to inquire if the player is interested
in the Special Exempt position and then contact Player Services immediately
following the player's decision to remove himself from consideration for any tournament
for which he is eligible.
3) If the player is interested in an event, Player Services coordinates with the Supervisors
at both events until the SE positions are filled.
4) If the main draw is to be made before a potential Special Exempt player plays on
Friday, then such place(s) shall be drawn in the same manner as qualifier, i.e., four
qualifiers ("Q") and one or two "SE" depending on whether there are one or two possibilities.
Each of the five or six slots are marked "Q/SE." As soon as the "SE" match
results are known, either the "SE" or the next Direct Acceptance (if the SE lost) is randomly
drawn and inserted into the draw.
5) If a player does not finish his Friday match by the nine (9) p.m. deadline at the qualifying
site and subsequently loses his match, then he is not eligible to be signed in for
qualifying or for a Special Exempt; however, he may receive a Wild Card from the
Tournament if it is known before the qualifying draw that he has lost and that no special
scheduling shall be required.
6) A player who does not appear after accepting a Special Exempt shall be treated as an
entered player and shall receive appropriate penalties.
