Marat Safin is the first tennis player ever 6'4" tall to win more than 1 major!

I've been waiting more than 3 long years to write this thread. Congratulations to 6'4" tall Marat Safin on becoming the first tennis player in the history of tennis 6'4" tall or taller to win more than 1 grand slam singles title! :D :tennis: It took Safin a few years to win his second grand slam singles title and he did it in dramatic and clutch fashion.

If people are wondering about tennis greats Stan Smith and Boris Becker they were listed as being 6'3" tall.

Brad Gilbert thinks Safin is 6'5" tall and he may be. But the statisctics show Safin as being 6'4" tall so I'll go with that.

And there has never been a great tennis player 6'4" tall or taller and I hope Marat becomes the first great tennis player at such a height. :)

Officially, Becker and Kuerten are at the same height of 190cm/6'3"

I think the combination of his size and movement are so awesome. In the US you see great athletes in basketball and American football who are large and mobile. It's really spectacular to watch them compete.

Marat's movement is incredible for a man 6'5" tall. :D I was going to say he moves like a Bolshoi Ballerina but I'll save that for Anastasia Myskina or Maria Kirilenko. :) ;) But Marat does move very well and his movement and power makes for a great comination as JMP pointed out.

Thanks. And I bet Marat is 6'5" tall as Brad Gilbert says. But we'll never know for sure unless someone like JMP measures him. ;)

As for the rest of 2005 I hope Marat avoids playing too much and avoids injuries. If he stays healthy he could have a great year. :)

Commentators usually mention how Safin can move so easily around the court. It really is amazing!

I read that Marat says he is 6'5".

We were having a conversation about true heights of players a while back because of this photo:

http://www.menstennisforums.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=28827

Have a look at Safin in comparison to 6'1" Henman or Federer or 6'2" Roddick.

The average height of the men's top 20 is 1/4 inch over 6' 0" so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense when people call Agassi or Hewitt "short" when they are not that much below that.

Thanks Booshie.

Pea, I tried to find out how tall Bill Tilden was. But I haven't been able to find out how tall he was. I think back in those days a man over 6' tall was considered very tall. if I had to guess I would think Tilden was about 6'2" tall.

Thanks for the link wipeout. And Marat does look taller than 6'4".

Croat, I also think Gorna Ivanisevic should have won more than 1 grand slam singles title. But atleast he won 1. :) It looked like he might never win 1 until 2001 Wimbledon.

Ajmo Ivo!

That photo is interesting for side by side comparisons, but beyond that... it's on an angle.

It does have some nice lines in the background adverts, though, that help the comparison but I think Marat is looking upwards slightly and a couple of people are slouching, namely Andy and Lleyton, as they look smaller than when they are shaking hands at the net with Marat.

Why is the height not listed correctly?
Do they just measure the player when he first enters pro and leave it alone for the rest of his career regardless of his later growth?
Some commentators have said that Fed is close to 6'2" although he's listed 6'1".
However, in the case of Olivier Rochus who's listed as 5'5" or something,
Brad Gilbert said he's more like 5'3".
So I guess he's actually shrunk! :D

jmp

robinhood, when Marat turned pro in 1997 he would have been at an age where he was still growing. So, it makes sense if he added an inch to his height between then and now. Also, players may fudge certain aspects of their height/weight for vanity reasons.

Just talking about Safin's height reminded me of a quote about him from Agassi from the Aussie Open 2004:

Q. The weapons, particular weapons that might worry you?

ANDRE AGASSI: Yes (laughter). Big serve. That worries me. 6'5" always tends to worry me a little bit. Monster forehand is a bit concerning, as well as a backhand that he can crush both directions, and the fact that he moves well is a bit unsettling (laughter).

Sorry for being blunt JMP. ;) But it is kind of funny that the WTA tour guide lists Serena Williams as being 5'9" tall and weighing 135 pounds. :p She's 5'10" tall and I think it's safe to say the oh so luscious Serena weighs alot more than 135 pounds. ;)

Don't mean to be rude or anything, but as for Serena weighing 135lb, they must have weighed her rearends only. I thought the catsuit was bad, but oh my goodness, they looked twice as big in those white shorts.

I agree with you Lenochka. But why aren't any of the WTA Tour's height and weight statistics correct? Are the women players try to hide their real weight as if they were models who need to weigh a certain weight?

Serena dosen't want people to know that she weighs more than most football players. :p

Why do they ask WTA players to put in their weight anyway? Women don't like to talk about such things. ;)

Another question to ask is...has there been a player 6'5" or over that has won a Grand Slam title? (Watch the answer be right there in front of my nose..:silly: )

Richard Krajicek is 6'5" and won Wimbledon. I don't know of anyone taller who's won a Grand Slam. Marat Safin seems to be the same or close to that height. :)

Tallest losing finalist would be Todd Martin at 6'6", I'd guess.

Here's Marat next to a bunch of guys of average height. It makes me laugh that he towers over his security guys.

He's as much taller than them as he is over Lleyton Hewitt and yet people call Lleyton "little"...
