Yes! :D I was really positive about his chances this year because of his track record at previous AOs and his strong finish to 2004. I got even more excited when ESPN2 ignored him. The commentators were waaay off the mark for the mens' and womens' fields during this tournament.

EDIT TO ADD: I voted yes, but not 100%.

i honestly didn't, especially after his poor performance at Hopman Cup. Marat I can't believe i doubted you, I'm so happy for you that you won!!

I picked other because I'm not going to lie and say that I believed in his ability to win it from the start. :p Once he won the first round in straights (yeah, that's not too hard for top players but he hasn't done that in a while) my confidence grew but I wasn't 100%. Then after he beat Fed, I was sure he could take the title! :D

I honestly had no idea how well he'd do. I love the guy, but he can be pretty inconsistent...and completely unpredictable. It's hard to say whether he'll come out and have a great match...or totally blow it.

He still surprised me...way to go Safin! :woohoo:

as much as i'd like to say i thought he could win, i never expected him to beat federer (though i wanted him to)

His Hopman form was so dire it was hard to back him for the AO; plus his draw didn't at first look so promising but opened up for him - even though Rochus and in the past Hrbaty have caused him problems at times.

I don't know how, but, I totally missed how bad he performed at Hopman. I'm so glad I did because I would have been very doubtful about his AO hopes. Since he's won AO, I've read a ton of posts about it.

i figured if there was 1 player on the men's tour that could beat federer, it was safin. then when he did it, i knew he'd win the title.

As much as I love Andy, my hopes weren't on him this time...something just didn't quite feel right going into it. He hadn't been challenged during any of his matches, and having his first difficult match be against Lleyton on his home court, after Andy's tough loss to him in 2004...not such a great combination.

I thought he could but I didn't think he would beat Federer and he proved me wrong there.

Other, of course he had the capabilities to do so, but didn't expect him to do it.

Yes, I believed he could win it... but then, I believed Goran could win Wimbledon in 2001 before the tournament and I followed every match closely. That could just mean I'm crazy, of course. :p

Meerouw!

If you read the question, you'll see it's "Did you beleive Marat COULD win AO '05?" (Okay, not exactly that, but I spell better.) Not, WOULD he win. COULD he win. Did I think he WOULD win? I wasn't sure, no. Did I think he COULD win? Yes. I thought it was possible. Just check my vcash. All that is from a bet I placed on Marat a couple weeks before the AO even started.

Yep... put a bit of Vcash on him.... but to be honest, I put a bit on Federer, and also put a bit on Agassi

I didn't. Kind of hoped but not too much - not to get disappointed.

I thought he definitely could win, but wasnt 100% sure. At the start of the tournament I had him as my 2nd fave behind Roger, but I became more convinced as I saw his form throughout the tournament. I think I was one of the few who said he could beat Roger.

I always knew that he had a chance, but I knew that his biggest hurdle to win this one would be to try and get past Federer and to keep himself calm and he handled them them both well.

I knew he was a potential threat- ever since last fall I saw a different Marat than the emotionally volatile one we all used to know and the moment they announced the draw that he was in Roger's half I was thinking to myself "Oh, shit". Apparently my instinct was right.

I undestood what you meant, and I do agree. "Did you think he could him?" i think it's still being a possibility... i guess the question were totally simple

Yes Denise, I thought Marat could win the 2005 Australian Open. But I was very concerned about his play after he played so poorly and went 0-3 in his singles matches in Perth in the Hopman Cup. :( But he shook off that poor play and turned his game around in Melbourne and won the title. :) I think Safin's winning the 2005 Australian Open beating Roger Federer in the semi's and Lleyton Hewitt in the final makes up for his losing the 2002 and 2005 Australian Open finals. :tennis: :)

One amazing accomplisment in Safin's career that gets little recognition was his playing the most games in the history of an Open era grand slam tournament at the 2004 Australian Open as an unseeded player. :) That really was an incredible accomplishment for Marat! :D :worship:

And after Safin won Oz I came accross a videotape I have of Marat winning his first ATP title in 1999 and I watched it again for the first time in over 5 years. It was fun to watch that again. :) Amidst all the ups and down in his career Marat Safin has come a long way in his career. :D But he still has more tennis mountains to climb. Udachi Marat! :bounce:

Good one Bea. ;) But no not that kind of mountain. :p I'm talking about the kind of mountain that's even bigger and taller that the mountains Marat runs up training in Monte Carlo! :tennis:

Bibir
02-06-2005, 08:11 PM
oh, I see! ;)

I just don't want him to climb those kinds of mountains anymore.

up Marat! up!....no more downs. :)

Thought Federer was going to win easily, either against Hewitt or Roddick - most likely Roddick because I thought Hewitt would fall in the quarters or semis.

But C_L, Lleyton stood tall and didn't fall. Until the final.
