So Safin won his 2nd Slam almost 4 1/2 years after the first. What are the longest Slam droughts you can think of? Is this the longest?

It's one of the longest droughts, for sure. A two or three-year drought isn't so uncommon, but four or more is.

Some others:

Arthur Ashe: 5 1/2 years AO70- Wimb75

Andre Agassi: 4 1/2 years AO95-RG99

Becker 1991 Wimbledon - 1996 AO
Slightly longer then Safin

Almost true, but Becker only made the Wimbledon finals in '91- he didn't win it though.

It was 1991 Australian Open to 1996 Australian Open. Six years.
