watched edouards game versus beck last week. he was so unlucky in the 1st set. beck had 2 dead net cords to give him break points (that ed saved). on the 2nd one they were both sort of laughin that it had happened again. then on set point another dead net cord to beck. ed was like 'you kiddin me' and beck, though a little embarrassed, was like 'what do you want me to do?'. was really impressed with eds attitude. he played solid on the many break points he faced and he never gave up - he could have easily been pissed off after the first set but he wasnt he carried on fighting. looked like he has quite a nice game. he serve volleyed about 1 point per game. from what i seen could easly be ranked 100 places higher.

I don't have time to translate it, but the "super mec, gentil et pas con" gets a nice article in L'Equipe today:
Papa, j’ai rétréci Del Potro

Fils du demi-finaliste de Roland-Garros 1983, Édouard Roger-Vasselin, 189e mondial, s’est payé hier le vainqueur de l’US Open (6-4, 6-4).

NADAL, MURRAY, LJUBICIC, Djokovic, Federer, Hewitt, Murray, Roger-Vasselin.

I saw the last 2 sets of his match today, he was great, very impressed by his composure too! :yeah:

Here's the translation of yesterday's article:
NADAL, MURRAY, LJUBICIC, Djokovic, Federer, Hewitt, Murray, Roger-Vasselin. This is the list of the players who have beaten JMDP in the last 6 months. There's no typo. Roger-Vasselin, "189th wheel of the coach", does belong to the list. You might find that weird, funny, deceptive or trivial. But don't forget to add: well-deserved.
The Argentine, 5th player in the world, didn't tank or mention any injury yesterday. He was slow, standing too close to the ball, couldn't find his rhythm on the FH side, he simply wasn't at his best. "I played poorly. I called the doc because I was feeling nauseous. He told me it was just the jetlag. But that's not an excuse. Having won a Slam doesn't make any difference: if I'm not playing my best tennis, I will lose to a guy who takes his chance and knows how to play tennis."
Édouard does know how to play tennis. Édouard also is a good boy. We've heard all that so many times already. "Pretty game, great guy, nice, clever, but no guts/not the mentality of a winner." The "great guy" admits it. "When I was training with Mathieu and Gasquet, I was trying to make them play well. Not to win the point."
It's true he has a pretty game, by the way. He served better than Del Potro yesterday (hence the 6 BP saved out of 6). He even dominated the rallies very often. And he believed he could do it. "I said to myself: 'Either you take it as a nice match, Del Potro, a Center Court with 10 000 seats... Or you take it as a nice match you want to win.' I thought a lot of Jérôme Haehnel beating Agassi in Roland-Garros in 2005 (when he was ranked 271st in the world, Agassi was 6th)."
The 25-year-old Parisian was shaky twice. The first time in the first game of the match, on his serve. "The tension. I was impressed." The 2nd time when he served for the first set at 5-4. "I calmed down, hit two FH volleys mid-court on 2 BP and got things going again. It probably made him doubt when I won the first set and held at the beginning of the 2nd set, while he was starting to hit the ball harder. I can imagine how he was feeling: he was playing a small guy he didn't know, it was tough..."
Tough wouldn't be strong enough to describe Roger-Vasselin's summer. The sudden death of his friend Mathieu Montcourt shattered him. "My girlfriend was with Mathieu on that night, she was telling me on the phone what was happening. It was more than brutal. I couldn't play for the next 3 weeks." At that time he was also about to leave the Team Lagardère. "I left them or maybe they made me leave them, I don't remember, he smiles. I spent 3 years there and I reached my best ranking with them in July 2007 after making it to the 3rd round in Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. But the end of the story wasn't so nice."
Édouard now is training at the Paris Lagardère. (It sounds similar, but it has nothing to do with the other thing.) A simple tennis club, with Grégory Carraz (#54 in 2004) as a coach. "We practiced 2 days together with Grégory just before I left to play the qualies in Bangkok and here. Pretty good, this Carraz, isn't he?"
And his dad? Is he good too? "My father told me one thing on the phone: 'Try some short slice on Delpo's FH, he might miss then.'" Édouard listened to his father and it worked very well. You have to know that the slice BH was the speciality of Christophe Roger-Vasselin, who lost to Noah in the French Open semi-final in 1983. How many times has Édouard been asked questions about his father? Even the Japanese journalists did yesterday. "All this talk was annoying me when I was young. Then people started to say: 'Hmmm, he's not as good as the father'. In a silly reaction to all this, I didn't take enough advantage of the advice my father was giving to me. I want things to be different now." Hey, dad, do you have a trick to beat Jürgen Melzer too?

And his father also comments a little bit on the match, he says he isn't surprised and it's well-deserved since Édouard decided to leave alone for Asia to play the qualies there. He asked him lately about the difference he feels in his game compared with his level of 2007 and Édouard answered he doesn't notice any difference - just a matter of confidence.
He can't give him any piece of advice for the match against Melzer, though, because he only knows the players he often sees on TV. He thinks Édouard can crack the top 50, why not.

The article in L'Equipe after the win over Melzer:

– F. Be.
One month ago, he was losing to Timo Nieminen (Timo, not Jarkko), ranked 525th in the world, in the 1st round of a Challenger. "I don't understand at all what is happening to me, he smiles. I'm not a different person now. Life is strange..." That's what Melzer certainly thought yesterday too while he was aced left and right. It made him very, very nervous as the games went by.
Doud's first reaction after the match was to check his stats. And he couldn't believe it. "15 aces! 0 double fault! But that never happens to me. It's not normal. But it's great. I've worked a lot on this shot lately. Still, 15 aces..."
Hewitt is pretty much the opposite of ERV. Precocious, unlike Édouard - "I never was in the French teams when I was young." And a battler, unlike Édouard. "Hewitt will make no bones about giving me a beatdown if he can do it. My big problem is that I'm too nice. But I try to change my nature." It's worth a try. That's how one finds himself signing autographs for loads of crazy Japanese fans one month after having lost to the 525th player in the world.

He beats Serra in Tunis and Acasuso here and his level is quite good. Let's hope he will make again the top 100 soon.

I am so happy I managed to watch Doud's match in KL yesterday! :D It was played around 2.30pm, I was afraid I would miss it but it just so happened that I took the day off to help my sister move house, so once it's finished I headed over to the stadium. Doud played an unbelievable first set against Cermak: he was very aggressive, serving well and nailing all the close shots.

In the second set Cermak seemed to have woken up and Doud's game started slowing down a little. He began to miss shots that he would've routined in the first set and started yelling at himself pretty much after every other point. (I remember grumbling to myself at this stage: "Stop being such a Frenchman, Doud.") He and Cermak exchanged breaks a couple of times, but Doud was lucky that Cermak double-faulted on BP at 4*-4.. so Doud managed to serve the match out.

Magnus Norman and Soderling watched the match but left midway through the third. I suppose they figured that they've learnt all they needed to know about both players.

Pictures! sorry the quality is very poor :o I don't have a very good lens for indoor photography.

nice little personnal quiz with ERV in Rennes. They'll gon in Lapland for their honeymoon

Rencontre avec...

Edouard Roger-Vasselin,

Santoro is working with him, it's not really his coach since it's not a full time association but he's helping Edouard on his game. He's with him in Montpellier.

Edouard  , after suffering so much over the years he get his 1st ATP F, and vs Gulbis, so I think there's a chance. Also, the at least 150 pts. he will win here will help him a lot in the rankings. It's his 3rd Top-20 win IIRC ( Delpo in Tokyo 09' and Dolgo in St. Petersburg 12').

He got two great wins in Cincy qualies, over Berankis and Zemlja in straight sets, so he gets at least 25 pts. . He plays Nieminen on R1, so definitely a great chance to win his first match, then he should lose to Berdych. He's #68 on the Race, so I think that a Top-100 finish is assured, and IMO he will end in the Top-70 if things go fairly well.

He lost to Andy 63 63 in Rotterdam, he is playing Marseille next week as the 6th seed , R1 vs a Qualifier, R2 vs Stakhovsky/Qualifier. His projected QF opponent is Tsonga. IMO it's a good draw for reaching the QF's unless Stakhovsky plays at his very best, and then Jo,it's quite difficult on paper as he is the defending champion, but he isn't playing really well now, so maybe there's room for an upset. Match by match though, Allez Edouard :yeah: !

Good tournament in Miami, he beated Cilic on R2 in straights ( best win of the year IMO) and then fighted well vs Wawrinka on R3 ( lost 75 64 with a lot of chances). He's playing Top-30 tennis right now, I think he will crack Top-40 very soon and that he will keep rising. He was on the talk for DC, but finally Monfils took the spot ( though Arnaud said that he's working well and that he could get a chance if he keeps playing like this).

Now clay, I hope he prepares well physically and mentally, because this European clay tournaments are very demanding.
