I find this quite interesting. Are these events simply too taxing now given how slow the courts have become?

Semi-Finalists of both events:
2005: 1 (Federer)
2006: 1 (Federer)
2007: 2 (Djokovic, Murray)
2008: 1 (Nadal)
2009: 2 (Federer, Murray)
2010: 3 (Nadal, Soderling, Roddick)
2011: 3 (Djokovic, Federer, Nadal)
2012: 2 (Djokovic, Nadal)
2013: 0 (2 Quarter-Finalists of both events: Murray, Berdych)

The courts aren't any slower than they were in 2012/2011.

If Fedal actually played Miami, or Delpo either didn't step up at IW or didn't go out early at Miami, one of those three might have done it or, in JMDP's case, allowed anotjer top player to do it.

They're back to back so maybe it's been a fitness/motivation thing this year? Always found the positioning of the two events a little weird

This. It might also be the first time that exactly 3 Spanish speaking players made the finals of IW and Miami since like...When? 1989? 1988?

Hey, now, that's a stat I definitely care about! Like actually, thanks.

If GOAT bothered to participate in Miami this year, he would have roasted Mugray. But being the generous King that he is, he occasionally allows his pigeons to feed on scraps :yeah:

Miami has become a joke event. IW has bigger prize money so players care more about it and then skip/semi-tank Miami. And tennis has become so physical that is hard to make semis in both events.

Also, those 3 Spanish speaking players are the 3 finalists (out of 4) who wear headbands!

Come on now, that's gotta be the first time ever

Heh. Interesting stat.

I guess it's just one of those years. Honestly, Djokovic and Murray should have done it, though.

2013 = strong era, everyone can beat each other.

2013 = weak era, everyone can beat each other.

I thought this was interesting, can't understand the negative comments.

Historically speaking, it's nothing new that results vary widely from one week to the next, even on similar surfaces. It's only since Federer started dominating we've seen the same player/duo/trio/quartet getting far in every tournament. If we go back a further ten years we see:
2003: 0
2002: 0
2001: 1 (Agassi)
2000: 0
1999: 0
1998: 1 (Rios)
1997: 0
1996: 1 (Ivanisevic)
1995: 2 (Sampras, Agassi)
1994: 1 (Sampras)
