By the way, I think that Robin Söderling is gonna play this tournament too, he's swedish and he's a upcoming star, he's only 18 I guess, so I think he received a wildcard or something.
But I'm almost sure that he's playing.

Four Swedes through to the qualifying round

With six of the eight second round qualifying matches completed, we already have four Swedes through to the qualifying round. These are Joachim Johansson, Andreas Vinciguerra, Johan Settergren and Magnus Larsson.

Joachim Johansson was first up on center court and continued the great form that he showed yesterday. Finland's Kim Tiilikainen, a solid baseliner , won the first set 6-3 but then found himself being outplayed by Johansson's big guns. "PimPim" will now face Edwin Kempes, who ousted Jonas Fröberg in a late Sunday match.

Andreas Vinciguerra was next up against Daniel Andersson. In their first meeting ever, "Vinci" was using his big forehand to win comfortably by 6-1, 6-3. He will now battle it out with Johan Settergren for a place in the main draw. Settergren won a close contest against well-known Wayne Black, coming back from one set down to win 7-6 in the decider.

On center court, Magnus Larsson and Nicklas Timfjord faced each other for the second time in their careers. Just like in Bĺstad five years ago, Larsson won in two straight sets. Larsson has one hurdle left on his way to the main draw - Dutch player John van Lottum. Van Lottum has looked sharp so far with two straight set wins against Prpic yesterday and Bartlomiej Dabrowski today.

In today's only other non-Swedish battle, Slovakian Davis Cup player Karol Beck won against Peter Wessels. He will now play Pierre Berntsson, who won an all Swedish encounter against Henrik Andersson in straight sets.

The main draw starts tomorrow with some big names in action. The number three seed Guillermo Canas is up against Andre Sa at approximately 4:00 PM. That match is followed by an interesting first round match-up between last year's finalist Jarkko Nieminen and Todd Martin, a champion in Stockholm four years ago. The last match of the day on center court, not before 8:30 PM, will be a doubles match being played between World number one Lleyton Hewitt pairing up with Sweden's Joachim Johansson against the doubles specialists Jeff Coetzee and Chris Haggard. On court number one, Chile's Marcelo Rios will also be in doubles action together with Juan Ignacio Chela. They have a tough draw as they will face Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett. Other interesting top players on court number one tomorrow are Tommy Robredo and Paradorn Srichaphan.

Ok, so why does Thomas E. have to play Hewitt :fiery: :fiery: :fiery: The guy is making a comeback and now he has to play that brat who he lost to the last 4 or 5 times they played. Life isn't fair.

Francine & Ma. Estefania:

I guess it's just the luck of the draw :( Hopefully Thomas can discover himself and give the potato an indoors lesson :D

Goodness knows Basel really made a mess of the draw, too, pitting the Swiss boys against each other in the first or second rounds

Joachim Johansson wins first ATP match

For the first time in his career, Joachim Johansson has won a main draw match in an ATP level tournament. He defeated Albert Portas 6-3, 6-3. "Pim-Pim" has lost in the first round of all four ATP tournaments he has played before. In Stockholm, he has received a Wild card both in 2000 (lost to Ulihrach) and in 2001 (lost to Vinciguerra).

This year, he entered the tournament as a qualifier after wins against Axel Pretzsch, Kim Tiilikainen and Edwin Kempes. Today's opponent, Albert Portas, came directly from the Challenger clay court season and couldn't adjust to the surface of the Royal Tennis Hall.

In the next round, Joachim will face Fabrice Santoro.

Tommy Robredo d. Thomas Johansson 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

About today's match:

Joachim Johansson: "For some reason I wasn't at all nervous coming into the match. Once we started I felt like I would get some break opportunities in his service game. My serve worked very well today and it helped a lot to have gone through three rounds of qualification."

10-23-2002, 10:41 PM
LOL, ungratefully stolen from Hewitt's forum ;) Apparently Joachim is dating Hewitt's younger sister :D

Joachim Johansson Loses Epic Three Set Battle

(from the official site)

Joachim "Pim-Pim" Johansson was one point away from defeating Fabrice Santoro. However, the "magician of tennis" never gave up and won 6-7(6), 6-4, 7-6(5). It was a very entertaining match between two contradicting styles of play. In the first set, both players held serve easily. "Pim-Pim" rose to the occasion and used his great serve and booming forehand to win the first set tiebreak by 8-6.

In the second set, Santoro found a way to return Johansson's serve and was able to convert one of three break points. Johansson continued to play well and in the third set, he was finally able to break Santoro's serve at 2-1. He then held serve to go 4-1 up. Santoro then held serve two times and broke Johansson's serve to level the score at 4-4. At this important stage of the match, "Pim-Pim" kept his nerves and held serve to 5-4. In the next game, Santoro was a little bit shaky and gave Johansson one match point at 30-40. With some great angles, Santoro got out of this jam and took the match into a third set tiebreak, which he eventually won by 7-5.

Andreas Vinceguerra leads Guillermo Canas 7-6, 1-0

10-24-2002, 09:35 PM
YAAAAAAAAAY!! :bounce::bounce:

Vinciguerra upsets Canas

Andreas Vinciguerra scored a fantastic upset when he defeated Guillermo Canas in today's night match 7-6(5), 6-2. Canas has won both their previous meetings comfortably and most people thought that the same story would be repeated today. However, Vinciguerra's topspin forehand was at it's best today as he moved Canas around the court. "I was more aggressive today than in our previous meetings", says Vinciguerra.

Canas was away from tour for two months with an injury and made his comeback in Madrid last week. One could see from his movement that he was not 100% fit today.

"Vinci" has a season full of first round losses behind him but has turned things around in Stockholm. Vinciguerra mentions his new coach as one of the reasons for the sudden success: "Tillis (Mikael Tillström) has meant a lot, he has made it fun to play tennis again."

Vinciguerra is the only Swede left in the tournament as we move into the quarterfinal stage. He plays Marcelo Rios in tomorrow's highlight match at 8:30 PM.
