Who can break top-20 for the first time in 2013?

In last few years there were only some few breakthroughs in ATP. Remember as in the 2007-2010 period we saw breakthroughs by Djokovic, Murray, Potro, Tsonga, Soderling, Cilic, Monfils etc. In recent years, even getting Seppi in the top 20 we perceived as a breakthrough. Who can join top-20 during 2013?
1)Kevin Anderson - Looks like Kevin found some consistency. Best start of season in his career. He is 29 at rankings now. If he won't face injuries and will find his serve (after surgery he serves poorly) he can reach top-20 after US Open or even before. I think Kevin can be a regular top-20 player for years.
2)Grigor Dimitrov - Not a huge fan of him, but he improved his game. He is already one of the fastest player on ATP, decent serve, nice forehand, good volleys, not bad BH slice. He is all-surface guy. Yup, his mental strength are his main problem, especially against top-guys. But he can join top-20 without beating top-guys. Grisha is ready for next step.
3) Ernests Gulbis - All in his head. If he will be able to keep his new vision of his career, top-20 will be just a start.
4)Chardy - OK. He is a mug and blah-blah-blah. But when he is ON, he is ON. Just one decent run and Jeremy will join top-20. But for his consistency top-20 is celling.
5)Paire - another talented clown. He is already 32 at rankings, but he is such a clown:facepalm: Flashy BH, great touch at net, fantastic speed, great return. As you remember Troicki was 12th, so Benoit isn't worse.
6)Tomic - Just need to meet Gulbis and ask him how it goes.

What do you think?

they all can and hopefully will but in which order...well, it's hard to tell really

Hopefully just Tomic from this list. Anderson would be okay too.

I only see Anderson as a relistic candidate. Everyone else may have the upside but their head is not there or lack the upside altogether.

Hopefully Gulbis and not just into the top 20 but higher. He came the closest to beating Nadal in IW, that's a good sign, hope he can keep it up :yeah:

I'm surprised Anderson hasn't been in the Top 20 yet. It's between him and Benneteau for me.

I suppose Chardy as well, he only needs one or two good runs to make it into the Top 20 but I don't see him staying there.

Anderson or Dimitrov IMO.

Anderson is just a decent player.

Grigor has the best game but he's still a headcase at present lol

Dimitrov and Tomic should do it. They are easily the most promising youngsters and just need the mental side of their game. Gulbis too has a good shot if he can mantain his newfound consistency.

Gulbis and Tomic can do it. But both must show best tennis, and won't choke (Ernie :) )

Janowicz isn't worried about staying in top 30 till Wimbledon so if he makes some big run before Wimbly he might reach top 20.

Gulbis also has a chance if he manages to keep his current form.

The sad thing is that you probably really think that.

all will probably break the top 20 at some point, the only one I'm skeptical about is Paire who clowns around way too much when things aren't going his way

Gulbis/Dimitrov/Tomic/Anderson/Chardy are all extremely likely to at some point

this year I can see Gulbis / Anderson / Dimitrov doing it

and the others eventually

Grigor, Bernard and Jerzy.

Tomic can with relative ease, but his obnoxious and inconsistent character is what's stopping him. If he is not in Australia and defeating Djokovic in exhibition tournaments, he doesn't give one flying shit about his tennis career.

Janowicz likely will, though I doubt he'll finish there

Agreed. I reckon he'll edge into the top 20 during Clay season, but unless he wins one of the Clay Master's, which I doubt, he'll probably drop out if he doesn't improve his last year Wimbledon showin.

If no injuries - Dimitrov is 90%, Anderson is 70% (Dimitrov is more solid on clay and has nothing much to defend till the end of the year, hence the higher chance).

I don't see any of the other guys with much chances tbh. Not for 2013 at least

Gulbis is playing at top 20 level since the start of the seasson

Dimitrov is the most likely candidate, because he plays well in any surface. With some lucky in the draws of RG and Barcelona/MC/Rome/Madrid (one of these) he could break the top 20 before Queens.

Gulbis also good chances, very good clay court player (RG quarterfinalist and Rome semifinalist, beat Federer and barely lost to Rafa), but he's not in the main draws already. Playing clay qualies could be very tough.

Anderson can't play on clay, neither Janowicz. Maybe in Wimbledon.

Would love to see Paire doing it! But maybe Dimitrov or Jano are the most likely ones.
