Karlovic: "Court and balls in Miami are too slow to play entertaining tennis"

Court and balls in Miami are too slow to play entertaining tennis. There is no winners, just unforced errors.

Agreed.

He said the same thing 4 or 5 years ago about Miami iirc. He's always struggled there, same as Isner.

It's the same for all players dependent on serve, and it's not too surprising imo: Miami has the lowest serving figures of any hard court masters.

You know something is wrong when players are exhausted after a three-setter. Imagine a five-setter on these courts.

If you are not going to fix the courts, change the balls.

Use the WTA ball, it is faster.

Good for Ivo. Why don't more players talk about the ridiculous speed of the courts?

Conditions too slow...Guys dying playing 3 sets. So slow. Makes it impossible to hit winners which results in messed up winners/errors ratio

Ivo obviously annoyed at how hard the court makes it for big servers, however I agree completely with his point if not his more than likely motive for the comments.

Miami is a chore to watch, never mind play. Was nice to see Gasquet and Haas making runs but otherwise a very poor tournament.

Yes, Miami may be difficult to watch at times, but anything is better than conditions designed to suit servebots like Isner and Karlovic. Nobody with a fleeting interest in tennis wants to watch a serving contest. It is the dullest tennis imaginable.

As if Ivo knows how to play entertaining tennis, he doesn't even know how to put a return ball in court. I watched his last loss in a challenger to some random mug and it was pretty sad how bad he was. He will surely be hanging up his racket soon.

Agreed, a middle ground such as say Shanghai, Basel, Modern Wimby speed would be ideal IMO. Not completely clued up on every court though so I may be off here

How come Haas managed to play so well then? Miami's always been slow - not a new development. Haas, Gasquet etc. all hit winners and played a varied style. For whatever reason, maybe due to the weather and conditions, both Ferrer and Murray played terribly with lots of errors but the idea that it's all to do with the court is silly when there were lots of matches in the week with good W/UFE ratios.

They could still play on carpet and Karlovic wouldn't be able to hit a backhand winner.

For Karlovic any surfaces or balls are too slow because he isn't good enough.

Djokovic and Federer have no problem blasting winners by Ferrer.

Karlovic might be the last person to speak about entertaining tennis but he's right about Miami. I'm a big tennis fan but this is the only tournament I skip watching. It is just too slow, players aren't even running to hit the ball they're just walking around the court traiding shots and waiting for the opponent to do an UE.

FYI Roddick won it twice.

Indeed. But the first time in 2004, before the Penn balls were slowed a lot.

2nd time, he was in great form, had just come from the IW final. Also, was still 6th seed in 2010, not some servebot like Karlovic.

'courts too slow to have boring ace fests'

That Murray and Vulture can't play exciting tennis on it, doesn't mean the courts are to blame. Put Nadal and Djokovic against eachother and you have a thrilling match.

with all respect, but Karlovic talking about entertaining tennis is just silly. I love Dr. Ivo and his personality but still, he should be watching his own matches and think about what 'interesting' tennis it is. :).

it clearly had something to do with murray and ferrer rather than courts

You do realise Karlovic's serve is actually more effective on high bouncing courts and why he served the record ace number on clay (before Isner/Mahut broke it)

Karlovic is speaking as a tennis fan, not a bitter player, but you're not quite sharp enough to understand that.

You know something is wrong when you see Ferrer cramping after two sets of tennis.

Well, lack of winners DOES have something to do also with the quality of opposition and their supreme defensive skills. But still, the hardcourts being played THIS slow is a joke.

???????

His second serve is a bit better on high bouncing courts maybe, but no way his first serve, the slicker and faster the court the better. That record setting performance was on clay in name only...court was indoors and was so bad and uneven the ball never bounced at all.

While I'm a huge Ivo fan, got to say it is a bit rediculous him talking about "entertaining" tennis. While his matches are entertaining if you're pulling from him (at least usually) but from pure a tennis standpoint they can be tough to watch.

LOL...Karlovic is pro player on the ATP, not a fan. He wants the tour to be suitable for his own game. I don't claim to be 100% unbiased (no one is), but at least I am a real tennis fan

The balls are the biggest problem. Use lighter balls and the shots travel through the air faster creating more winning shots.

But it's pathetic how slow the courts have become in Miami.
