I think it looks good for Pim Pim and that he won´t have problems with the injury. There have been some shorter articles in Swedish papers about him
and in these he says that he feels good. The injury is not that worse as Pim Pim first thought, therefore he is in a good mood for the Aussie Open.
Pim Pims coach doesn´t think that the injury will affect Pim Pim in a negative way.

Let´s hope so and KOM IGEN PIM PIM ;)

Joachim powers into third
January 19, 2005

GIVEN the speed with which local players have been eliminated from the Australian Open, fans could do worse than clamber aboard the Joachim Johansson bandwagon after he moved into the third round tonight.

Swede Johansson, whose Australian connection is a romance with Lleyton Hewitt's little sister Jaslyn, swept past Dutchman Peter Wessels 6-3 7-5 6-4.

Hewitt and Victorian Nathan Healey were the only Australian men to qualify for the second round, so fans - not to mention telecaster Channel Seven - are understandably desperate to find a star to hitch their wagon to.

The answer could be the man known as "Pim Pim" due to the mispronunciation of his name by his brother.

The towering No.11 seed will next play Spaniard Feliciano Lopez and remains on track for a quarterfinal meeting with world No.1 Roger Federer.

It was an exciting prospect, as Johansson and Federer were the top two players in the world in 2004 for service games won and break points saved.

Standing at 198cm and with a serve rated on a par with that of Andy Roddick, Johansson is a frightening prospect for the world's best, let alone Wessels, who was playing his first grand slam tournament in three years.

Johansson's aggressive game, spearheaded by a serve topping 220km/h, resulting in 21 aces tonight - and booming forehand simply overwhelmed Wessels.

The 26-year-old Dutchman had not played in a grand slam tournament since Wimbledon in 2001 due to injury, and his first round victory was just the second career win in such a tournament.

He improved 94 ranking places to 110 in the world during 2004 after a solid season on the challenger circuit.

'PIMM-PIMM' LOOKING JUST ACE

Big-serving Swede Joachim Johansson crushed Peter Wessels in straight sets on Wednesday evening.

Johansson, known as 'Pimm-Pimm', fired down 21 aces in a highly enteraining match that was always fun while it lasted.

Both players were roared on by an army of compatriots, but it was the Swedish contingent doing most of the cheering when their man took the first set 6-3.

Wessels began to find his range in the next, but a single break of serve was enough to give Johansson a two-set advantage.

The 11th seed never looked like throwing that away as he eventually closed out 6-3 7-5 6-4.

Pim Pim :bounce:

Sounds funny Pim Pim jumping on the court ;)
Unfortunately German television did not show (as usual) anything of the match, but I could imagine that they were singing "Små grodorna."
This is a childrens song which is very popular at Midsummer (when the Swedes are dancing around the Midsummer tree to this song) and the song is about animals. The first phrase is about a frog and that frogs have no ears and no tales. So you have to point to your ears and back (or tale) and then everyone is jumping ;) It is difficult to explain and this must sound very strange, but so are the Swedes ;)
It is very funny and I remember that Gusten (Magnus Gustafsson) was also doing this dance with the Swedish fans in Australia some years ago.
So everyone who has this match should listen to what the Swedish guys are singing and I am sure Kristen could also tell us!

This article is about how much Pim Pim enjoys the Swedish support in Australia.
Translation will follow this evening ;)

MELBOURNE. Andra sidan jordklotet – men ändå hemmaplan.
Publikstödet lyfter ”Pim-Pim” i Australian Open.

Here´s the translation:

Everyone likes the Swedish supporters

Pim Pim dances and sings "Små grodorna" in front of the happy Swedish crowd in Melbourne. "It is seldom we Swedes can experience something that fantastic, it is so great," Pim Pim says after winning the match against Wessels.
The other side of the earth - but nevertheless home match.
The support of the Swedes means a lot to Pim Pim. "It is fantastic when 200 Swedish fans are shouting every time I win a point."

Both Pim Pim and Thomas thanked the fans a lot after their matches.
"It is difficult for our opponents. They know that the crowd is against them when they have to play a Swedish guy. But everyone thinks our fans are very fair," says Thomas Johansson and continues: "Also in Stockholm we have a great support, the spectators in Sweden know a lot about tennis. But though it is totally different here in Australia, the atmosphere is more like at a soccer- or hockeymatch." And Pim Pim says the same:"It is seldom we Swedes can experience this. Maybe at an abroad match in Davis Cup and here in Melbourne. It is just so great."

Tomorrow morning Pim Pim plays against Feliciano Lopez. Pim Pim has not played fantastic the last matches, but he has won his matches:"I have played good in the important points, I am satisfied with this. But I can play much better."

Pim Pims words about his next opponent:"He is one of the best servers on the tour, but not that good from the baseline, so I hope I can dominate the match." Pim Pim can at least count in the support from the crowd. The Swedish players do what they can and give free tickets to the fans. There has "the Greece" an important roll. "That´s his name, he is the leader for the Swedish supporters and we give our tickets to him," says Thomas Johansson.

thanks for the article sommar
how nice of the johanssons to give away some tickets :)

here's a part of lleyton's interview after his match agains blake. they asked him about pim pim:

Q. What do you say about Joachim Johansson's achievements last year?
LLEYTON HEWITT: Last year?

Q. Yes.
LLEYTON HEWITT: He had a great last year. Obviously at the start of the year, he, you know, lost in qualifying in Adelaide. Then he's gone on to finish 11 or 12 in the world, so he's had an amazing year.
He's always had the potential, though. He's got amazing firepower. It was pretty much just a matter of time before he matured as a player, I think. He's dangerous on all surfaces and, you know, as we saw at the US Open, beating Andy Roddick in five sets in a quarterfinal at the US Open is not an easy thing to do.
You know, he'll be around for a while.

Q. Do you think you had any impact on him?
LLEYTON HEWITT: I don't know. Probably copying me with a few things, but I don't know (smiling).

Open-Joachim Johansson edges Lopez in epic five-setter
Fri Jan 21, 2005 12:19 PM GMT
By Simon Cambers

MELBOURNE, Jan 21 (Reuters) - Eleventh seed Joachim Johansson outslugged Feliciano Lopez in an epic battle at the Australian Open on Friday, edging out the Spaniard 6-3 3-6 5-7 7-6 13-11 to reach the fourth round for the first time.

In a match containing 72 aces, the deciding set alone lasted 84 minutes but after Lopez double-faulted in the 23rd game, the Swede held his nerve to serve out for a place in the last 16 against four-times champion Andre Agassi.

Johansson, who reached the semi-finals at the U.S. Open last year, banged down 38 aces to Lopez's 34, and after the first four sets were shared, it came down to a battle of nerves.

Neither man made much impression on the other's serve until 11-11, when, having saved four break points with some courageous hitting, 24th seed Lopez double-faulted to hand the Swede the vital advantage.

Johansson made no mistake as he completed victory with an ace to win in just under four hours.

Johansson stuns Lopez in thriller

Joachim Johansson put in a magnificent battling display to see off Feliciano Lopez in five epic sets at the Australian Open.
The Swede, seeded 11th, looked on his way out as he struggled with a leg injury in the final set.

Lopez was two points from victory at one stage but Johansson kept firing down huge serves to keep the 24th seeded Spaniard at bay.

And it was Lopez who cracked, Johansson winning 6-3 3-6 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 13-11.

With Johansson needing treatment on his leg in the fifth set, the Swede simply went for outright winners wherever possible.

And with the vociferous support of a large Swedish contingent, he held on to set up a meeting with Andre Agassi.

JOHANSSON SURVIVES EPIC

Joachim Johansson hobbled his way through an epic battle of the big servers on Friday at the Australian Open.

The powerful Swede, seeded 11, won a four-hour encounter against Feliciano Lopez 6-3 3-6 5-7 7-6 (7/2) 13-11.

Troubled throughout the final set by a thigh strain, Johansson was on several occasions just a couple of points from defeat.

However, each time he held his nerve and eventually Lopez cracked.

The Spaniard, who had survived two break points in the very first game of the fifth set, saved four more in the 23rd game before Johansson finally took his chance on the fifth.

Having not forced a break point in the entire final set, it was no surprise that Lopez was unable to retrieve the situation and Johansson completed victory with his 38th ace of the match.

Earlier Johansson, who providing he recovers from his thigh problem will next face Andre Agassi, had fought back from two sets to one down to stay alive.

here's a part of andre's interview:

Q. What do you say about playing Joachim Johansson in the next round?
ANDRE AGASSI: Yeah, well, that's not going to be easy. I mean, I've seen his game. I've admired it from a distance many times. Quite powerful. Never playing somebody before, it's hard to know how their game feels and how your game matches.
But I know there's not a whole lot of room to make mistakes out there. If you don't hit it aggressively enough, he's quite powerful, so...

Q. How does it suit you playing a big server like him?
ANDRE AGASSI: Well, I never like playing big servers. I like playing people that hit the ball very soft all the time (laughter). I don't care if they're serving or playing a forehand or backhand, the softer the better as far as I'm concerned.
You know, he's a guy, he throws the ball up, there's a few guys out there that, when they go for their shot, there's nothing you can do about it. You just hope that you can make them do it over and over again and do it in pressure situations and take your chances when you do get them.

Q. Does it make you feel better knowing he went 13 11 in the fifth today?
ANDRE AGASSI: Tennis can be a very cruel and sometimes arguably unfair sport. But in the spirit of competition, you've got to deal with what's thrown at you. I can honestly say I'm glad I didn't go 13 11 in the fifth.

Q. What would be the key in that game, do you think, on Sunday?
ANDRE AGASSI: Again, there's a lot of sort of guesswork involved when you never played somebody. Really, there is. But he has one of the biggest serves and biggest forehands in the game. I mean, there's no question about that. I don't have a good sense for his movement. I don't have a good sense for his backhand. I don't have a good sense for his volleys. I don't have a good sense if he likes the ball up high or he likes the ball low. I have to sort of assess from what I see and then be able to make adjustments.
Hopefully I can give him a few things to worry about, too, and we can call it even

Agassi fears element of surprise
By Guy Hand
January 22, 2005

FIT, firing and defying his age, Andre Agassi nevertheless admits to being concerned by his Australian Open round 16 opponent tomorrow, Swedish wunderkind Joachim Johansson.

Johansson, 22, is one of a handful of top ranked players that 34-year-old Agassi has never played - leaving him in the dark as to exactly what to expect.

With both a booming serve and world ranking, Johansson is among the rising stars of men's tennis, and Agassi is hoping the element of surprise doesn't spook his chances of winning a fifth Australian title.

"I've seen his game, I've admired it from a distance many times - it's very powerful," Agassi said.

"Never playing somebody before, it's hard to know how your game feels and how your game matches.

"There's a lot of guesswork involved when you haven't played somebody.

"I don't have a good sense for his movement, I don't have a good sense for his backhand, I don't have a good sense for his volleys - whether he likes the ball up high or down low.

"But hopefully I can give him a few things to worry about too and we can call it even."

Johansson broke through in 2004, improving his world ranking more than 100 places to No.11 in the world.

But at the very least, Agassi may be able to call on a fitness edge - Johansson was taken to five sets in an epic four-hour marathon last night before finally sinking Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-3 3-6 5-7 7-6 13-11.

In contrast, Agassi wiped out fellow American Taylor Dent in straight sets in under two hours in a major boost in his campaign for a first grand slam title in two years.

"I'm honestly glad it wasn't me to go 13-11," said Agassi, feeling no ill effects from a hip flexor injury which had threatened to keep him out of the Open.

"I felt really good physically and it's nice to feel that come around now into the second week.

"I feel great. I felt I moved around the court (against Dent) better than I ever have."

As well as the fanatical Swedish presence at Melbourne Park, Johansson is likely to have significant Australian support in his match tomorrow as the boyfriend of Lleyton Hewitt's sister Jaslyn.

J. JOHANSSON/F. Lopez
6 3, 3 6, 5 7, 7 6, 13 11
An interview with:
JOACHIM JOHANSSON

THE MODERATOR: First question, please.

Q. In which physical condition are you just now?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I haven't really felt too much after the match, but obviously I'm a little bit tired in my legs. But hopefully it's going to be fine.

Q. During that last set you didn't seem to be moving too well. Were the legs hurting?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I think it looked like it felt for me (smiling). Yeah, I was struggling. Something happened in my right hamstring in the fourth set, but probably it was only that I was fatigued in my muscle. Then I was moving a little bit different, so I got cramps in both legs.

Q. Have you had a match like it before?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, this was only my second five setter and it was a little bit different, this one, compared to the one I played against Roddick in the US Open last year.

Q. It's a bit of an unknown factor as to how you'll recover?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah.

Q. How do you think you'll go?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, I think I should be fine. I mean, I played last week in Sydney and then I got injured so I had like five days I didn't hardly do anything. So it feels like maybe I worked my muscles up a little bit today.
But I think they should be fine. I haven't done too much work for the last week and a half, it feels like.

Q. What got you through today?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Felt like I was serving well in the fifth. And then, I mean, had one good returning game in the fifth set. I was very lucky to break him there when he ended off with a double fault.

Q. Do you feel like you know Feliciano better now after that?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I mean, I never played him before. It was a pretty good first match for me against him.

Q. Do you think that your connection to the Hewitt family has endeared the Aussie crowd?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I'm not sure. What it felt like with all the Swedish support I had today, maybe that was also the reason.

Q. Do you feel the Australian crowd like getting behind you?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I felt like they were cheering for me today and in some other matches. I don't know the reason, but it's always nice when a country, a lot of people are supporting you.

Q. What's going to happen if you and Lleyton are in the final?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I don't know. You have to ask the crowd about that.

Q. I'm talking about your girlfriend.
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Oh, you have to ask her about that one.

Q. You got Andre coming up. How do you feel about that? How do you think you'll match up with him?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I haven't really been thinking too much about that match yet. I never played him before, so I'll probably have to speak to my coach a little bit what we're going to try to work out for the next match.
The main thing for me is that my body is going to feel good. I know if it feels good, I have a good shot at winning on Sunday.

Q. Is he one of the guys you always wanted to play?
JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I mean, he's one of the best players of all times. I'm not sure if you really want to play someone like that, but it's a great opportunity for me before he's going to quit. I mean, you never know how many more years he's going to play for, and I think it's going to be nice to play him.

I was so proud of Pim Pim. I think he knew he couldn't stand a match where he had to move a lot and was just blasting knowing that was the only way he could win.

I think he has a lot of room for improvement, but it bodes well for him that he is so brave. :)

Before the match started they showed an interview with him and they gave him an aussie pop quiz:lol: they asked him when was Australian Day and he said "if you tell me I'll remember it" so the interviewer whispered it and then he said it. Then they asked him if he had an appreciation for cricket, which he does:yeah: and he said he's played a little bit of cricket during the break (bags not playing on the opposing team, we'd get whomped) and then they asked him what they were asking for if they said "Captain Cook for a dog's eye" (ok not even my parents knew that one) and it meant "meat pie" anyhoo it was funny:p

Open-Agassi wears down ace machine Johansson
Sun Jan 23, 2005 06:40 AM GMT
By Simon Cambers

MELBOURNE, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Andre Agassi withstood a record 51 aces from Joachim Johansson to beat the in-form Swede 6-7 7-6 7-6 6-4 and reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on Sunday.

In high-quality match, 11th seed Johansson smashed 96 winners but was unable to stop Agassi from setting up a mouth-watering last eight showdown with defending champion Roger Federer.

"It was a tough day," Agassi said.

"I was anxious the whole time. It's really tough to find your rhythm against Joachim.

"I had to stay focused and disciplined on my serve and hope that I can convert on the few chances I had."

In bright sunshine and a tricky wind, Agassi lost the first set despite not making a single unforced error.

Recovering from 2-0 down, Johansson produced an astonishing serving display, hitting an ace on the first point of each service game and belting 14 in total, before taking the tiebreak 7-4.

A subtle change of position when receiving helped Agassi get his teeth into the Johansson serve, and when the Swede put a forehand in the net on Agassi's second set point, they were level.

Agassi then snatched the third set, 7-3 in the tiebreak, to move ahead.

After both players traded breaks at the start of the fourth set, the American clinched the vital break in the fifth game on his way to victory.

The previous aces record was held by 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek of the Netherlands, who served 49 in the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open in 1999

Q. Did you think you were capable of serving that many aces?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah.

Q. What do you think is so dangerous about your serve?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I don't know. Actually maybe you have to ask the opponents that question, I think.

Q. How did you feel when you'd known you'd broken the record?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Well, I just heard it then. Yeah, I think it's a nice feeling, but it's nothing I've been thinking about.

Q. Do you think you can do it again?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, hopefully one day.

Q. How does it make you feel knowing that someone like Andre Agassi is pretty much in awe of you now, respects you even more now considering what you've done?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I mean, he's a great player. He's one of the best players of all time. I mean, if he respect me, I think it's a good feeling for me.

Q. During that match you looked so close very many times. How do you sort of look back on it now? How do you feel?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: Yeah, I was close in the second set when I had 4‑3 breakpoint. But, I mean, I don't think I could have played the match much different than I did today. So I'm still happy with the tournament, but I was hoping to go all the way.

Q. Can you put a reason why your serve was working so well today?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: I think it could have even worked better maybe.

But, yeah, I think I hit the spots I wanted to hit a lot of the times. But I think I still can improve my serve a lot.

Q. Do you think you sort of proved something to yourself today the way you took it up to Agassi, given his stature in the game?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: No, I mean, I think every match you play, you can maybe prove something for yourself. Today wasn't any different. I think, for myself, I mean, I could work myself around with him. I tried to play aggressive, so I was dictating the game. That's what I did today.

Q. Do you think it was missed opportunities today?

JOACHIM JOHANSSON: It's always a missed opportunity when you lose a match, I think

awww Pim Pim

The veneration gap?
At The Open

It's ridiculous. Andre Agassi is 12 years (and two months) older than Joachim Johansson. In his tennis shoes, he stands 18 centimetres shorter.

Anyone happening on the pair tangling in the street would tell Johansson to show his elders more respect, or pick on somebody his own size. They met yesterday on Centre Court.

The statistics suggest a mugging: 51 aces to Johansson; 16 to Agassi; 96 winners to 35. But Agassi won.

He prevailed because there's more to tennis than thumping the ball hard. (Mark Philippoussis, please note.) In addition to all those aces - a record number for a men's singles match - the 22-year-old Swede also sent down nine double-faults to Agassi's four, and committed 66 errors to just 13 by the old man from Las Vegas.

In the end it came down to timing - not just the sweet timing of Agassi's shots, but when he chose to apply the pressure. Put that down to experience.

Agassi's victory earned him a quarter-final tomorrow against defending champion Roger Federer. It may well be the match of the tournament.

Agassi survives ace-fest
January 23, 2005

ANDRE AGASSI gave away a 51 point "start", a dozen years and 18 centimetres to Joachim Johansson – and still handed him a beating in their third round Australian Open match at Melbourne Park today.

The 34-year-old American beat Johansson 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-3) 6-4 to set up a quarter-final against world No.1 Roger Federer.

For Agassi, a four-time Australian Open champion, the match came down to weathering the massive Johansson serve, which produced a tour record of 51 aces, bettering the previous mark of 49 set by Richard Krajicek at the 1999 US Open.

For the rest of the match Agassi probed and prodded and made the most of his opponents inevitable mistakes to turn back the force that in the first set seemed certain to overwhelm him.

Agassi's victory over an opponent who at 11 was seeded three places below him, followed the relatively easy progression of defending champion Federer.

The hottest grand slam favourite in the history of the game, Federer met surprising opposition from the unseeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus before emerging with a 6-2 6-2 7-6 (7-4) victory.

While Federer's result was always likely, Agassi's survival often seemed less certain.

Johansson, who is 1.98m tall, serves from a height of more than three metres, which turns the geometry of the tennis court decidedly in his favour.

"All I could do was try not to be overwhelmed out there," Agassi said.

As he has done for most of his 19 years in professional tennis, Agassi achieved that ambition better than most.

Johansson began with a 14-ace first set, knocked 16 serves past Agassi in the second and brushed home with nine and 12.

Agassi, however, proved there is more to the game.

"He was living and dying by his shot selection," Agassi said.

"I just had to be careful not to give away points I had control over."

With knowledge that comes from almost two decades of knocking it around the world's tennis courts, Agassi pointed out that on the previous three occasions that the match record for aces had been set, the player who did so had lost.

Agassi said the potency of Johansson's serve came not from its speed, but from the angle he created with his towering height.

"It's a phenomenal weapon," he said.

"He has a lot to look forward to."

So does Agassi when he meets Federer on centre court on Tuesday night.

If Pim Pim had been his 100% yesterday, Agassi wouldn't be the one to face Federer tommorrow.

Why there are so many ppl just nail Pim Pim's aces and UEs? He showed much more that just that! He was brave to play against "one of the best players of all time" with thigh injury, not to mention he wore out in that marathon match. What's even worse? He almost put Agassi down when he had some troubles to move as smoothly and quickly as he used to.

Next time he'll shut some ppl up by his tennis, let's just wait and see.
