Miami R3: Ramos def. Blake 6-4 2-6 7-5

James

Ramos was very sharp in the first set...FH on song and got plenty of first serves in. Blake did well to stay in touch.

Then Ramos dropped off a bit in the second and Blake took control, clinching the set with a lovely CC BH return winner.

James exploded out of the blocks in the third with a salvo of DTL winners off both wings. He didn't quite use the momentum to break though, there was a BP in game six but he didn't take it. Was broken after a poor game at 5-5 and that was that.

Blake was fucking amazing from the beginning of the second to 5-5 in the third then handed it away.

Pretty good match overall, sad ending but Blake is playing a lot better than he has been the last few years.

Ramos really did a good job in the last few games of running Blake all over the court and then Blake was fatigued and lost 8 of the last 9 points to go away pretty meekly.

Crap call on 0-30 in that game, Ramos's ball was clearly out.

Still, horrible service game from Blake, typical stuff from him.

Poor showing in the first and third sets.

Ramos comes across as a poor man's Nadal/Fiasco hybrid.

I think Blake's age is just catching up to him. He looked dead by the third set and probably wanted nothing to do with playing another match and just kinda gave in.

He was outstanding in the second set though. The BP in the 3rd all he had to do was put one of 3 volleys away but couldn't end the point and Ramos was able to make a nice shot.

He would still beat anyone in Englad not named Andy Murray. What a joke. The guy is a choker but does play some decent ball for his age. He reached this round on his own unlike Isner who needed umpire to help him out.

I don't disagree with you on Tomic. Tomic is up and down. He is up beats Blake. His down, who knows. But Blake was not crazy awful for an old man. The guy can't move, so the fact that he reached here ... he did better than Del Po here, let's be honest. This may be James' last year, so I do hope he wins more matches on faster hard courts. This is so slow

I agree but it is sad to see Blake play like this. watching him play I have zero faith in him hitting a winner at all.. it's like even he doesn't believe it anymore.

One of Blake's main weapons was his explosive speed so it's no surprise he hasn't aged particularly well.

03-25-2013, 04:49 AM
i've got the feeling that he just doesn't train hard enough, but you did see glimpses over the past two tournaments of the shots he can hit. But I think his inconsistency just stems from lack of fitness/work on the court. He took his shirt off after the first set and it was all jelly.

It's a shame I didn't appreciate his game when he was in his prime due to the ballbashing and dumb thinking, but now that type of aggressive style is rare and it was fun to see at least some of the winners he hit tonight.

Why didn't Blake & Rodduck retire in 2004, so that we didn't have to endure hyperbole about their high ranking & flag waving?

If Miami is a clay court, how come Nadal has never won it? List of winners do not read "clay specialists" to me.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Masters#Men.27s_singles
Murray (09) and Roddick (04 + 10) are not traditionally thought of as clay specialists, are they?

well, not one clay specialist has won the BMW Open in Munchen for the last over 10 years, so it doesn't mean anything.

Rafa's played 3 finals here and he won IW, which is faster, so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter

True enough. Funnily, I checked the list of München winners and noone has won it three times since Budge Patty 1954-56. Kohli or Denko could do it this year.

Lower bounce. It might be slow, but look at the height the ball is hit at, compared to shoulder-height stuff at IW.

Sent from Verticalsports.com Free App (http://www.verticalsports.com/mobile)Shut up already, you're getting as repetitive as lenders. Fact is you can say jack shit about a player like blake's potential after watching his clownish 30+ year old self. Nadulltards really don't understand the concept of decline. They will though, no worries.

During Fed's era the top 10 was changing constantly. This is because those players were not as consistent as Nole and Murray (Fedal was already top two back then as you know). But when it came to the peak level of Safin, Nalbandian, Davydenko, Agassi, Gonzo etc they were not inferior to Noleray - which is why dissing that era is retarded. In this era though the top 10 hardly changes because of 2 things:
1. With the homogenization of the courts, it is easier to get consistent results in tournament after tournament.
2. There is not any resemblance of depth in today's field. Ferrer at 30 years old hanging steady at no. 4-5 in the world is proof of this.

Furthermore, talking about competition, Nadal has had shit competition his entire career on the dirt. "He'd win anyway" you say, yet you don't realize the same thing would go for Peak Fed on HC.

That break point in third set at 3:2* 40:30, 2nd service. If he would convert it... but he decided to rush the net without any good approach shot. TBH it would't be smarter to try to go for huge shot or wait for error cause in that part of match Ramos wasn't playing good.
