I only got to see a smide of the match (from my Tivoed ESPN Coverage) but I like what I saw. And one thing that I thought was really neat is that Brad Gilbert- who is commentating for ESPN and can be a pill- seems to have a LOT of respect for David. Argentine trio make history at Australian Open

Sat Jan 22, 2005 07:52 AM GMT

By Simon Cambers

MELBOURNE, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Guillermo Coria, David Nalbandian and Guillermo Canas made history on Saturday when they ensured three Argentines reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in its 100-year history.

Sixth seed Coria will meet number nine David Nalbandian in the last 16, while Canas will take on Russian Nikolay Davydenko, a surprise winner over seventh seed Tim Henman.

With the trio all seeded in the top 12 at Melbourne Park, Coria said it should come as no surprise that they have reached the fourth round.

"It's the attitude with Argentine players," Coria said after his 6-3 6-2 6-1 win over a struggling Juan Carlos Ferrero.

"They are all very young and motivated and looking forward to making history in their own country."

Coria, who had shoulder surgery last August, appeared to be back to his best against Ferrero, taking advantage of the out-of-form Spaniard.

Former French Open champion Ferrero is still batting for full fitness himself after a succession of injury and illness problems in 2004.

"Today I felt excellent," Coria said.

"It was a difficult match and I had to be very focused. I made the most of the moments where I could break his service, and I really made the most of the moments where I could win. I feel very confident about the next match."

Nalbandian proved too consistent for Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, the Olympic doubles champion, as he won 6-7 7-5 6-2 6-3.

The former Wimbledon runner-up has reached the quarter-finals here in each of the past two years.

However, having never beaten Coria dating back to their years on the junior circuit, Nalbandian will have his work cut out when the players meet on Monday.

"Every time we play is different," Nalbandian said.

"I have known him for a long time, we played juniors together and won the junior doubles at Wimbledon in 1999, so we know each other's game very well."

Canas crushed Czech Radek Stepanek 6-1 6-2 6-2 to reach the fourth round for the second consecutive year.

Argentina could yet have four men in the last 16 as Juan Ignacio Chela, the 25th seed, takes on former world number one Lleyton Hewitt in the third round later on Saturday.

About Coria: "It will be one more match , but tough"

It's going to be a tough match vs Coria. I saw him vs Andy in Houston, for a set he was pretty good.

Not Coria's. I did get to see the last game of his match with Gonzo, and highlights of his match with Ferrer.

I believe this time will be David's win. He's lost to Coria only on clay surface, David's more confident here and has lot more experience on faster surfaces.
I hope he'll do it. Coria I like too, he's argentinian as me, but I way prefer the King.

I think you're right, it's David's time now. He's been improving ever since the tournament started and I think he can make it. He's had some tough matches and never gave up, he continue fighting. Coria hasn't had much of a challenge yet, except for Mello. So we'll see how everything goes.
I am watching Hewitt's match right now, and I honestly think that David can beat him now :) No one seems that unbeatable in this tournament, not even Federer. So, Vamos David!!!

Bit late with this but congrats David. I honestly thought after a set and break down it could slip away quickly but he really fought back well. The 3rd and 4th sets looks pretty comfortable. Great win :D

Hey guys, I just discovered something else: david and Coria have never played against the other in a Grand Slam, meaning all they ever played was best out of 3. And I think David has the advantage there, if he makes Coria run a lot, he'll find a way to cramp his way through the match :)

I really liked how David played against Gonzalez. He was really down after Feña won the first set 6-7 and then broke him to be 0-3 that I thought it was gone, but slowly he was back and in charge of everything. His forehand worked well, his backhand was as good as usual, and his return was amazing! If he maintains his level, he can kick Coria's ass here. But the more important aspect here is his head. He needs to stay focus from the beginning to the end!

One thing I like about the Aussie schedulers is they are scrupulously fair. Yes - I agree - he should have. Hewitt acted like his usual belligerent, aggresive self - but there was still no excuse for what Chela did, although he was "man" enough to apologise for it to Hewit''s face as soon as the match was over. And I guess Eduardo maybe did say something to David - all coaches do - I see them at live matches all the time - it's just whether anyone else sees them or not!! The newspapers mention the incident, but no images were shown, so I can't say anything about it. Chela did say that he didn't mean to spit him, but I don't know.
Even though I hate Hewitt's behaviour on court, I can't be on Chela's side on this one. Although Coria did say something interesting to the press here: "Everyone hates Hewitt".
i saw it, Chela did spit, but didn't to hewitt  to my understanding, he just passed by Hewitt's seat, and spit to a place close to him  so i don't exclude the possiblity that the press overdraw this thing. That match is really boring, so i got some sleeping at 4th set.......
I don't care Hewitt's "come on", but he shouldn't do that when his opponent does a UE, that behavior likes teasing sb....even James Blake complained about that.

I did see the Chela incident - Eurosport repeated it over and over again - quite put me off my breakfast actually!! Chela hit a shot - it was a mis-hit - it hit the net and bounced out - it was an error pure and simple. But it gave Hewitt a break point at an important stage of the 4th set, so he started doing his usual "Come Ons" which were totally unnecessary then in my opinion - if you've hit the best winner ever -then fine - but not because of an unforced error. Anyway - Chela looked really angry  and Hewitt broke his serve to win that game. As they walked back to the chair at change of ends, the cameras clearly caught Hewitt saying "f****g a**hole" in Chela's direction (yes - I can lipread!) - that's when Chela spat. It was in Hewitt's direction and was clearly intended as an insult but it didn't hit Hewitt. As I said before, I don't condone spitting and bad manners whoever does it - and Chela deserved his fine - but he was provoked, no doubt about it. Off court, Lleyton always seems quite polite and mild-mannered - but on court he is a little devil

Ok, I'm still in. Here's the article:
Open warfare for combative Hewitt
Lleyton Hewitt has long been the berserk warrior of tennis. His mission is not merely to beat his opponent but to conquer him. To take him out if he has to. So it is no coincidence that Hewitt, his advisers and propagandists have turned this Australian Open into a war zone both on and off the court and created the type of combative environment in which the local hope thrives.

As Hewitt's verbal barrages and self-indulgent theatrics get under their skin, his opponents sometimes react outrageously. And there have been bitter confrontations, too, with the tournament organisers about the speed of the court and between Hewitt's coach, Roger Rasheed, and the petulant Argentinian Juan Ignacio Chela and his coach in the locker-room.

This has been the collateral damage as Hewitt has stormed into today's fourth-round clash with Spaniard Rafael Nadal, a match in which the Australian may well have to fight tooth and nail to win - and no doubt will. The question is whether, having attached his bayonet, Hewitt is going too far over the top as the pressure builds to capture the title he craves more than any other.

Before the tournament, Hewitt seemed as relaxed as he had ever been after an ideal summer build-up. However, at times of high stress, it is human nature to revert to familiar patterns of behaviour. For Hewitt, that means extracting every ounce of effort from his more muscular body - no matter what that takes and no matter who gets hurt.

In recent years, perhaps after accepting the advice of confidants such as John Newcombe and Pat Rafter, Hewitt has curbed his on-court antics and directed his histrionics at himself, his entourage or his personal cheer squad, the Fanatics. But in successive matches against the mild-mannered James Blake and the more confrontational Chela, there have been glimpses of the outbursts that caused so much anxiety in the early stages of Hewitt's career, when he would eyeball opponents and umpires when screaming his trademark exhortations.

Against Blake, Hewitt turned to his supporters rather than acknowledge his opponent who was applauding Hewitt's great shot. Against Chela he celebrated in predictably belligerent style after the Argentinian's forehand clipped the net-cord and floated out, setting up break points for the Australian. In both cases Hewitt did not breach the game's laws, only its spirit - or what its spirit used to be. But he is clearly irritating his opponents.

Blake's unexpected response was to whack a winner, then mock Hewitt's second-hand Swedish Vicht gesture where he points his hand at his head. Chela's comeback was far more offensive. First he aimed a serve at Hewitt, then he spat in his direction, a vile act that deserved more than the $US2000 ($2600) fine Chela was given. But it was an act of surrender, not only giving Hewitt the upper hand on the court but taking him to a previously unknown location - the moral high ground.

Indeed, so abject was Chela's behaviour that it incited Hewitt's burly coach Rasheed to storm the locker room and demand satisfaction from Chela's coach while Hewitt delivered a lecture on sportsmanship in his press conference. This after commentator Jim Courier had made the strange assertion that it was all right for Hewitt to celebrate his opponents' mistakes, but not for the crowd.

So, perhaps for the first time, the Australian not only won the war but also the post-match peace.

Meanwhile, Hewitt's campaign against the allegedly slow courts has split the Australian tennis community. Strident attacks by Hewitt's camp and his media friends against tournament organiser Paul McNamee have come at a delicate time with the position of Tennis Australia chief executive and director of player development to be decided soon. There is now a feeling that Australian tennis is divided into the Hewitt camp and the McNamee camp.

The latest big gun dragged into the debate at the weekend was Pat Rafter, who used, or was used by, a newspaper column to lambast McNamee for not tailoring the courts to the satisfaction of the Australian players. "I don't care what Paul McNamee says," wrote Rafter. "This court does not suit Australian players and their style of play and it is up to him to make it right."

Bizarrely, Rafter criticised journalists for seeking opinions about the court from international players - "Who cares what they think?," he wrote - ignoring the fact the opinions of visiting players had been sought only after Hewitt started the debate with his criticism of the court speed in Adelaide.

Appropriately, it will be Hewitt who settles the question about the court speed once and for all. Having conquered the claycourter Chela, he faces another in Nadal. Should he make the quarter-finals, either Guillermo Coria or David Nalbandian, both more at home on red dirt than green rubber, will be waiting. Against these baseliners there is one way Hewitt can prove his point about the courts conclusively - by losing.

Yet in his combative form, that seems unlikely. Hewitt is bent on winning this title. And like any hardened warrior, he will count the cost later.

"I'm proud of David for all that he's been doing after his father's death. I admire that and I don't know if I would have been able to do it. Our families were very close and all of us felt terrible and sad when we found out about it in Barcelona. I wished him all the best"
David said that's gonna be hard to face someone you know so well, but at the same time it has its advantages cause you might know things that others don't.
He looked good and this time he even laughed and smile a bit more. :)

Yeah it was. I heard another part of the interview and Coria also said that David's mental strength is great. Especially in difficult times during the match, he always find a way not to desperate and do the right thing. He also said that David has everything to be a great player.
As for David, he said that the good thing to play someone he knows is that there are no surprises and he knows exactly what to do to beat him :) And that every match is completly different from the other, in a way he said that the H2H is not relevant at all :yeah:
Coria also said that people might not know this, but David beat him many times before, so things are pretty even between them.
