A new year, a new thread. I felt like doing something different from the duck-themed threads and threads that rhyme (although I'll miss the bong of kooyong  )

So post all Kooyong pics, news, rants in here please. :)

Deboogle!.
01-11-2005, 04:57 PM
TGS, it's like a regular tournament where it starts at the QF with only 8 people, so the winners will move on to the semifinals and play each other, then the winners of the semifinals play each other for the final.

The only difference is that the losers also play each other - and that's simply to guarantee that they get enough matches in (they're all guaranteed three, whether they win or lose), because many of these guys are using it as their only AO warmup so they want to get in as many of the good matches as they can :)

Yea, you know you always wanted to count his eyelashes!!!!!!!!

Here's from an AFP article :yeah: Sounds like Andy played well and Ljubicic maybe didn't:o That's a pretty nice UE count for your first match in over a month :yeah:
==========

World number three Andy Roddick kept his unforced error count down as he beat Croatian substitute Ivan Ljubicic, brought on to replace injured Thai Paradorn Srichaphan.

Roddick earned a 6-1, 6-4 result, striking 19 errors to 46 for Ljubicic. "It was good to get out an play a competitive match in front of a crowd," said the American. "I'm excited to keep going.

"This field is amazing. There are a lot of great players using each other to get practise for the Open."

from the Bangkok Post:
-----------
Roddick said he was using the United States' loss in the Davis Cup final to Spain last month as motivation for this season.

He started with a 61-minute win over Ljubicic, who lost to Federer in the Qatar final last weekend.

``Whenever Andre and I practice _ even if a tournament is a month away _ we're still intense,'' said Roddick, guaranteeing their head-to-head will be more than an exhibition.

I don't expect him to beat Andre on Rebound Ace... but it's a great match for him because Andre will make him hit a lot of balls, and that's what Andy really needs, to get his timing and confidence and also to play in a tight match. Ljubicic was almost too easy, he needs to play a tiebreak or a tight set or whatever to help him get into the swing of things again for the AO. So it's perfect. And regardless of what happens, he also gets to play Tim or Roger, so I think it will be great preparation for him all around.

I don't think he'll win this match, but he's still changing and adjusting his game.

Maybe Goldfine can be a good teacher who isn't afraid to say no and doesn't tell Andy that he's not good enough to beat top players.

Last year, he wanted to improve, but IMO, there was nothing for him to learn.
Ever since October 2003, he was allowed to lose belief in himself. He got WAY out of control on and off-court.

okay, got it open, here's the whole thing :)
==========
ANDY RODDICK:

Q: Andy, pretty efficient start, straight sets. Was it a comfortable one?

A: Yeah, it was surprisingly comfortable. I felt like I returned pretty well today and got a lot of first serve returns in and I thought I hit the ball pretty well considering it was first match in a little while.

Q: Difficult coming up against an opponent, even though it's just an exhibition tournament, coming up against a guy last night you didn't think you were going to be playing?

A: Yes and no. I think this week your main goal is to get practice and I think all of us are just looking to get prepared for the Aussie Open so it wasn't too big of a shock but obviously that doesn't happen in normal tournaments, it wasn't that big of a deal, I wasn't stressing out too much.

Q: All the hiring and firing ... that went on, last time we saw you was in Seville and it looked as if it hurt you, you looked as down as I have ever seen you. How did you regroup after that? What did you do to put it behind you?

A: I think I might have used it a little bit, you kind of use that and try to put it into workouts and put it into something positive. I'm not one to go and sit home and just sit in bed and feel sorry for myself, I have no reason to feel sorry for myself. I went and really tried to put it to work and it's still going to hurt but, if anything, it just makes you hungrier.

Q: Was that what set you out on that Road Trip you did for the Brown Brothers or was that already arranged?

A: It was already arranged but it was nice because we all got out there, we were all pretty disappointed but we went, we hung out together, and I think it was healthy for our team to regroup. We were playing for fun, exhibition matches in front of cool crowds and it was good. I didn't how much I would be up for if after Davis Cup but it actually worked out okay and it was a good time.

Q: What sort of message did you get back from the people because you went to some out of the way places where tennis isn't normally associated, was it good therapy for you to know that there is kids out there and people out there who are into tennis?

A: They were fired up, it was amazing, we were getting pretty good crowds everywhere we went, and we did it on purpose, our whole goal was to kind of taken tennis to places that have never seen live tennis, or haven't seen it for 25 years or something like that, and we didn't know what to expect because it had never been done before, especially on a bus, but it was a good idea and it worked and it's definitely something that I think can be done again some time.

Q: Did it just come up over dinner one night in Seville?

A: No, not in Seville. This has been in the planning for a while. One of my agents and I were sitting down and talking, just shooting ideas around about tennis, and I said: why don't we just get on a bus like the music groups do and just go hit three cities in four nights and play and see what kind response we get and the response was positive so it was good.

Q: You meet Andre tomorrow. When you play a guy like that, who is a legitimate rival for the Australian Open crowd, even though this is just a warm-up, is there still a bit of an edge to it?

A: Andre and I can practice when there's a tournament a month away and we will still be intense, it's just the way we are, we actually played once on the bus tour in one stop and we were going at each other but we have a good friendship and I have so much respect for him. I think all the top players here are basically just using each other to get prepared for the Aussie Open so you want to go out and play a good match but I think the biggest thing is just playing competitive matches in a match type atmosphere.

Q: Are there still psychological points to be won over rivals or not?

A: Maybe, but I think the biggest thing, like I said, is playing good tennis and trying to get prepared. We live and die out there every week so you get a week like this you really just try to focus on doing the right things.

Q: Roger Federer was talking about Tim Henman and his ability, last year was the best year of his career. How do you think he is developing as a player?

A: Absolutely. I wasn't around for a lot of Tim's earlier years but just when I first came on tour until now, there is no doubt that he had his best year last year and that's saying something after the injury problems he had the year before, to come back and put forth your best effort is impressive.

Q: Looking at this season, Roger said he thought he had it in him to take his .... a step further, do you feel he is heading that way as well?

A: I wish he would stop doing that.

Q: Do you feel that this year could be the year you did something really, really big?

A: I hope so. We play mind games with ourselves and tell ourselves every year but I definitely feel like I had a good off season, spent more time on court this off season than I have before so I'm excited, I am really, really excited about the upcoming year. :yeah:

Q: Do you actually set yourself any goals anymore?

A: Of course; I think you have to otherwise you're just out there playing blind, or at least that's the way I feel.

FEATURE-Open-Roddick determined to be upbeat about 2005
Thu Jan 13, 2005 01:05 AM GMT

By Simon Cambers
MELBOURNE, Jan 13 (Reuters) - When Andy Roddick blasted his way to the U.S. Open title in 2003 at the age of 21, it looked as if the world was at his feet.

But despite finishing 2004 as the world number two, having won four titles and led the United States to their first Davis Cup final since 1997, the American goes into next week's Australian Open knowing he has a mountain to climb if he is to win his second grand slam title.

Roddick reached his first Wimbledon final last year, taking the first set off Roger Federer before losing in four sets.

While the Swiss romped to three of the four grand slam titles, Roddick ended his year on a sour note when he lost to Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the semi-finals of the Masters Cup and saw his hopes of Davis Cup glory ruined by Spain.

The American ended his 18-month spell with coach Brad Gilbert in December and, after a period of recuperation, says he is ready to hit top form at the year's first grand slam event, which begins in Melbourne on Monday.

"I am pretty excited about 2005," said Roddick, tuning up for the Open at the Kooyong Classic alongside Federer, Andre Agassi and Tim Henman.

"I feel good out there and feel like I'm hitting the ball pretty well."

ROAD TRIP

The defeat to Spain, when Roddick was beaten by both Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya, hurt deeply but the former U.S. Open champion said he had used the feelings to motivate himself anew.

"I am not one to go sit at home, sit in bed and feel sorry for myself because I have no reason to feel sorry for myself," he said. "If anything, I think I might have used it (the defeat) a little bit.

"I really put it to work. It's still going to hurt but, if anything, it makes you hungrier."

A road trip across the United States with Davis Cup team mates Mardy Fish and Bob and Mike Bryan, in which they played exhibition matches in cities that rarely see world-class tennis, also helped to get Roddick on track for the months ahead.

"We play mind games with ourselves and tell ourselves all the time but I definitely feel like I had a good off-season," he said.

"I spent more time on court this off-season than I have before so I'm excited. I am really, really excited about the upcoming year."

My guess is that Andre is a smart man and he knows himself and he will be ok for next week. yes, I hope so. He doesn't mess with his body anymore, which is probably one reason he's still even able to play. I know his 1993 wrist injury really scared him, and since then he has been very cautious.

Thanks for the update again, Naldo. Seems like Andy's hitting the ball pretty cleanly, so this is good to hear. and yes, I'm sure Andre will be ok. He HAS to be!

but  it looks like he was definitely in pain

"Agassi pulled out early in Thursday's match against American compatriot Andy Roddick and apologised to the crowd, saying he needed immediate attention for a hip flexor problem.

Agassi appeared to suffered the injury in the 10th game of the first set, and finally conceded in the 12th game when Roddick led 6-5."

Yeah I noticed the mesh went half was across his back when I looked at some pics at getty-images. A bit bizarre, but it does make sense since it's mesh you would want the shirt to breathe quite a bit and I doubt Andy would want his nipples on display.:p

The AO will be so much less fun for me to watch if Andre doesn't play. He's a wise veteran so I know this was the right move and he'll hopefully come back strong. :yeah:

Yea, that's what is odd, the mesh business. I mean the color is boooooring and  but the design of it is just... weird. I don't think I like it  Where's the nice lime green stripey stuff from the Warehouse. Please Andy, we beg you. Like, it's mesh, but it's not really that see-through.... it's... weird.

Havok
01-13-2005, 02:53 AM
It's because of the color I'm sure. If the mesh was lets say white or maybe a brighter color, I think you would be able to notice it easier.

I didn't know where to ask this question, but...

I just heard on the local news in Houston that Roddick might be playing an tsunami charity relief exhibition (organized by Courier) here on January 31st. Anyone here have any idea if this is true? I think it's pretty unlikely considering the 30th is the men's final, but perhaps there's been some mention of the event somewhere?

hi darnyelb! :wavey:

Haven't heard a thing about it. I hope Andy's not planning events for the day after the men's final :(

But Andy is friends with Mack and he's doing a lot of the stuff in Houston, so if he's back in the US by then, I'd be surprised if he WASN'T there. I just hope that he isn't :)

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I'm now thinking the newscaster just added Roddick's name to the report to excite viewers. Chris Evert & Anna K are reportedly already scheduled for the event. Perhaps it's left open to him should he get eliminated prior to late 2nd week? Hopefully that will not be the case.

If I had to guess (which I guess I will do lol) that's what I'd say, that his people said "well if he's back in the states, he'll go" - and I'm sure he'd want to. But, I hope he's not back in the states yet :) He can do all he wants for the tsunami charities after he holds up the trophy ;)

Nice to see you in the Andy forum, come by more often:D

Sarcasm is the truth. I feel bad for Andy.because good things don't come his way very much. Things looked good in his mind, but old hopes don't always become reality.
I can dream about his progress on clay and in the majors, but small U.S. tourneys take away his time.
Memphis and then Mattress Mac..ugg How lucky and loyal is Andy?

Andy could travel back to 1984 Who knows how much success he'd have back then? It was less demanding.

Tennis commentators are pathetic because they've influenced Andy's decisions too.
Look what happened with Mary Carillo, Pat McEnroe,,,

I'm furious about the Tennis Channel too. Give 1-2% of the U.S. good programming. Joy...

Andy's press conference after the match with Andre
--------------

ANDY RODDICK:
Q: Andy, we just had a word with Andre and he said he felt the injury first about midway through the first set. Did you get any sense on the court that it was an issue that early?

A: Maybe not that early. He started going for a lot more on his second serves a little bit later on in the set, basically hitting two first serves, and I figured there had to be some reason for that. Then obviously in his last service game, I would have bet pretty much everything that we weren't going to finish because he talked to the umpire. It was pretty disappointing because in the early going and throughout the set we were playing at a pretty high level and we were having a good bit of fun out there.

Q: I'm sure when you came here today you were expecting a really long, tough match. How disappointing for your own preparation is it that it was cut short?

A: It's tough for me to feel sorry for myself right now, when Andre is a good friend and his preparation is a lot worse off than mine is right now but I'm not too disappointed, I'm glad I got out there, almost a full set. Like I said, I was pretty happy with what I showed with the chance I had today.

Q: Given that you know Andre a lot better than any of us, what should you read into the fact that he has pulled out of this tournament with this injury today?

A: I think it's too early to say. It's no secret that we use this to prepare for the Aussie Open and I pulled out of a match here last year because I had blisters, which weren't going to get any better by me playing on it so it's tough to tell. I'm sure we will know more in the next couple of days and see how it pulls up but you'd definitely want to be as cautious as possible with a Grand Slam right around the corner.

Q: You talked a little bit yesterday about your Road Trip - I was actually doing some reading on it this morning - it was actually called Rock 'n' Racquets?

A: They had different names for the events in each city. Alabama was Rock 'n' Racquets.

Q: And what were the names for the other ones, anything special?

A: I don't know. The whole tour was called My Ride and we would stop in various cities and they had their own clever names for the events there because they had separate promoters at each event.

Q: So there was music playing during the matches or at changeovers?

A: Yes. It was a lot about crowd interaction, people didn't have to be quite - if they said something, we'd talk back. It was fun. It was tennis in a little bit of a different way.

Q: You have had only 11 games today and not playing again until Saturday, are you going to do any extra work to compensate?

A: I think so. Even the match that I played here, I played a couple of practice matches out of Melbourne Park before this event started so I probably won't play any extra sets tomorrow but I will definitely go and try to get in a good minimum hour and a half workout there tomorrow and probably go to the gym later today. I think today is the day where I will maybe do more to make up for the lack of time on court.

Q: How much have you been able to work with your new coach and what did he change in your preparation?

A: I've worked with him a lot.

Q: How many days?

A: I think the day after Christmas. We were talking on the phone a lot and kind of getting into it. It's as hard as I've trained on the court for probably since I was 15 years old; we were putting in very, very long days and very intense days but it was fun, it was exciting. :yeah:

Q: You were talking about the crowd interaction. Brad was a very interactive coach when he was up in the stands. How different is it with Dean?

A: As far as my interaction?

Q: Brad's always had plenty to say.

A: Well, not to me, I was playing.

Q: Plenty to say generally, anyway.

A: He's not shy, by any stretch. Dean is a little bit more low keyed but they each have their strong points, they're different people but they're both really good coaches.

Q: How did you decide on Dean, what was the compelling thing in the end?

A: We were pretty familiar with each other, he was the Assistant Coach on our Olympic team and our Davis Cup squad so I'd spent some time around him, he has been around top 10 players before, he was with Krickstein for a while and with Todd for a while, and then when I made my decision to kind of look elsewhere, I met with him and just how excited he was, and the fact that he'd said: I'm not going to take any of your nonsense, if we do this we're going to go to work and we're going to work really hard. I loved that, I was really excited about that. He spent a lot of time on the challenger circuit in the last two years and made sure it was going to be no different with what he was doing with those guys and with me and I was really into that, I was ready to work. (I LOVE YOU DEAN!)

Q: What is different to his way of working compared to Brad's?

A: I think a lot of it is just in training. They both have their strong points. Dean is great at really motivating you on a day-to-day basis as far as training goes and putting the hours, and he's doing it with you, he's on the bike right next to me if we're doing fitness and stuff. And Brad is really good at scouting matches and kind of putting a different swing on things and presenting tennis in a kind of a sort of different way. (I love you more, Dean!)

Q: When you say he had the same attitude that he took to the guys on the satellite tour, is there a danger when you become the world number one player that people around you, maybe not intentionally, treat you with kid gloves?

A: There are a lot of people that are smiley faces for no other reason than the fact that you're a top tennis player, that's for sure, I'm very conscious of that, so I definitely liked it when he said: you know what, if we do this we are going to work, and I was all for that, that was very impressive for me. :yeah: Ok let's see it in your results.

thanks for the pictures and the interview Deb
What Andy is saying about Dean sounds great to me...but it doesnt matter until it shows in the results.

yeah that shirt...umm...its just ugly. Its weird how the mesh goes all the way around the back and its plain old gray and all that crap. I get the mesh thing, like its probably much better to play in, but yeah its ugly, to me anyways. It also doesnt help that the shirt is stil 3454365 sizes too big :p I hope we get to see that green shirt from tennis warehouse soon :)

And omg, I am so sad about Andre  But like you guys have been saying, I am sure he is a very smart man, and all that, so he is being extremly careful. I will be sooo dissapointed if he has to pull from the AO because of this
