I realize that it doesn't start until Monday and we've got Hopman finals first . . . but does anyone know if this is getting any tv coverage at all?? I know it's not on the tennis channel . . . and I don't think it'll make ESPn or ESPN2 (not even for the finals) but I can hope nonetheless.

Best of luck to him . . . tonight and next week!!! :wavey:

Here's an interview from an Auckland newspaper that was published today . . . nothing exciting really but news nonetheless. Particularly like the last line . . .

Guillermo Coria hopes his misfortune of a year ago does not return to hinder his plans to start the year on a winning note in Auckland this week.

The wiry world No 7 from Argentina is top seed for the Heineken Open starting today, and has drawn a potentially awkward opener against former champion Sjeng Schalken tomorrow.

But Coria, who turns 23 on Thursday, hopes he'll still be in Auckland for the party. Last year, an abdominal strain counted him out of his second-round match against eventual winner Dominik Hrbaty.

The second half of his year was marred by a shoulder injury. He missed three months before playing the end-of-year Masters Cup in Houston, but it knocked his chances of pressing the world's top two, Roger Federer and Andy Roddick.

Coria won two titles in the year, at Buenos Aires and Monte Carlo, made four other finals and reached his first Grand Slam final, losing 8-6 in the fifth set to fellow Argentine Gaston Gaudio in the French Open.

He must have fancied his chances in Paris, as he did not drop a set before the final and had won his previous 18 matches against his compatriot, not to mention holding a 6-0, 6-3 lead in the final before Gaudio began a stunning revival.

Coria reckoned he was primed for a big push in the second half of the year before his shoulder went bung.

"I realise that it is very tough to get over such a complicated injury," the 1.76m Coria said after practice at the ASB Tennis Centre yesterday.

"I am really keen to go back and try to be 100 per cent physically first.

"At the beginning of Roland Garros [in May] I really felt I was up there. If you are talking No 1, of course we all felt Federer was unbeatable last year, but I was playing well and my plans were to try and play as good as I could and maybe overtake Federer or Roddick or whoever was No 1 in 2005."

How versatile is Coria? Only three players - the remarkable Federer, Roddick and Coria - reached finals on hardcourt, clay and grass last year.

Not that I can see . . . that really sucks. In this day and age, it doesn't make much sense. Ginepri and Calleri are up first and Coria is to follow. Ginepri/Calleri should already be playing (it's 11:52 am there already).

Here is a article on his match Tuesday. The web-site for this tournament is really the pits. You have to dig around the 'net to find anything about the matches.

Coria shows his class

Jan 11, 2005
By Alan Granville at the ASB Tennis Centre, Auckland

Guillermo Coria showed why he is the top seed at the Heineken Open with a 6-0 6-3 victory over former champion Sjeng Schalken.

The Argentine was always in control and no matter what Schalken threw at the world number seven it always came back with interest.

The giant Dutch player is no slouch, winning the Heineken Open in 1999, but has played few tournaments over the last few months after being diagnosed with mononucleosis last year.

Coria too had an injury-affected 2004 and came into the tournament suffering from a back injury he picked up at the Hopman Cup in Perth.

But he showed no signs of it as he raced through the first set in 27 minutes.

Schalken came out fighting at the start of the second and broke Coria's serve, but his advantage only lasted a game as the Argentine broke back.

It went with serve until the crucial eighth game when Coria broke to lead 5-3 and he took the first round match when Schalken netted a backhand.

Coria said he was pleased with the one hour 13 minute victory after three months of rehabilitation from his shoulder injury.

"I am very happy with my level of play today. If you think of all the troubles I have had lately and the recovery from such difficult surgery, I feel happy because it seems as if those three months of work I did in Barcelona in the off season are starting to pay back," said Coria.

"The match today looked a bit fast in the first set but the reality was I played with great concentration throughout the match. It is important to get through your first match of the year, especially after such a long break.

"Sjeng is a very tough opponent and in the first set it didn't look like he was playing his best tennis. But the second set was very tough."

Schalken admitted he played the wrong game against the Argentine.

"It was the first time that I have played against him. I was playing a bit too quick in the first set and obviously he likes that. It is really tough. He is so quick and has everything," said the Dutchman.

"I wasn't playing badly, I was having to hit five winners just to make one point, and that is too much to ask.

"I didn't play horribly. I played like I play and not many players beat me when I play like that."

Next up for Coria is a match against Frenchman Cyril Saulnier, who beat the Argentine in straight sets at the Australian Open in 2004.
