I think he will be 100% seeded, because the only scenario that leaves him behind the line is if Rafa decides to play, Fognini beats Ferrer today and Anderson reach the final in Delray Beach. I don't think that all these three will happen, so Grigor will be seeded :)

I saw Gulbis play last week and I would pick Grigor to beat him. It's a tough draw but he should just concentrate on winning his first match comfortably. If he can do that then he can go into the Novak match with confidence. He would have nothing to lose and these are the type of matches that make you a better player.

If Grigor plays to his ability, he should be able to beat Ebden or Kuznetsov comfortably.

Novak is great but Grigor is my favourite player and he's the reason I joined this MTF so I will definitely be supporting Grigor if they meet in R3. :worship:

Agree with Hypnotize - barring a mental meltdown Grigor should be able to move past Ebden without too much trouble. I also think Grigor's got be best game to match up with Novak up until the Semis (Murray). It might be another year until Grigor is at that level, but as long as he serves well he's got a chance.

Great to see him get a win and while he had good stats on serve, he will need to serve more aces to threaten Novak. At least he is winning the matches he is expected to, now he has to start beating the players above him. Grigor has the game to trouble Novak, he just has to prove he has the mental strength and self-belief to tough it out.

in the matches against gasquet or murray in the past months. Winning a set would yet be a sign that he has improved and can be a threat the best players.

I am pretty sure about that, Fish didn't play that good against Reynolds (doesn't have much power in his strokes yet) and should lose quickly against tsonga and sharapova never gives her opponenent more that 4 games a match in the first rounds ;)

In order for Grigor to win he will need to get a high percentage of first serves in - Novak returns better on the backhand side, so hopefully he'll go to his forehand primarily on first serves. He will also need to return to Novak's backhand side and try to keep the ball low - if he can do that consistently, he's got a chance. It's crucial that he doesn't lose his serve right away, otherwise Novak could steamroll him pretty quickly. Let's see if he can keep it close and somehow pull out the first set. Hopefully he took away from their last match that he can hang with Novak if he can stay inside the baseline - that will be key in the rallies. Once he has to play defense he's going to lose the majority of points. I'm getting pretty stoked for this one - hopefully he'll give Novak a good match!

I'm with you RandyE. Novak is the favourite and could easily run away with the match if Grigor let's him but Grigor definitely has the game to threaten him. He needs to serve well, stay focused and believe in himself especially at key points in the match. He needs to go in with the right gameplan and accept that Novak will put him under a lot of pressure and probably even break him. Those are the moments when has to stay positive and believe he can pull it back.

This match kinda but you in mind fame of what happen in Brisbane this year with Andy Murray, where Grigor Dimitrov was in full control of the first set but shut down & got nerve when it was time too close it out. He shown that he can hang with the best and Top 10 player & IMO he will soon be a Top 10 player, but he have too learn not too let a match slip outta your hand so often, Hopefully he will rebound in Miami

seems great games before 5-3 in the 1st set...and then lost his concentration and confidence...the most thing that worries is that in the 2nd set there was no signs of fighting back in the match...really poor performance in the 2nd.

Yeah unfortunately I had a feeling that he would lose his nerves if he lost the first set in heartbreaking fashion - that was tough to watch, in particular the four double faults. He definitely isn't quite at Novak's level yet but he showed that he could hold his own. One thing I noticed was that he had no idea what to do once he lost the first set - it seems that he was only reacting at that point...signs of lost confidence and disappointment. If he can get those first serves in when he needs them he'll be much closer to pulling off a victory. Hopefully he'll get a nice draw in Miami.

Let's hope not. It's possible this loss may knock his confidence going into Miami but his team should really work with him to identify what happened and fire him up to do better next time. Losses like this where you are in command of a match are often the ones you learn the most from. They need to work on techniques for him to use the next time he is in a similar situation such as focusing on the next point, maybe taking a bit of extra time between serves even if it means getting a time violation. I like the speed Grigor plays at but it really worked against him when he was serving those double faults. That was the perfect time to let off some steam, towel down and regain focus. Instead he just rushed his serves and you could see the pressure building.

The 2nd set was obviously disappointing but also quite understandable. It's hard for anyone to put that kind of situation behind them, especially a player like Grigor who rides on confidence. Added to that, Novak is the worst player to face in these situations as he excel at tightening his game and not letting players back into matches.

It was a bad loss but there are still positives to take from it. He served and rallied well at the start of the match. If he can see this as a learning experience then it could help him in the future. If he lets it get him down then it could hurt him in the weeks ahead when he has an excellent chance to improve his ranking.

I don't see the second set that negative, too. I was actually surprised that he could reach the tie-break, did not lose it to 0 (as against Murray in Brisbane)and won at least a game in the second set.
As Federer won't play Miami, Tipsarevic will be the number 8 seed, so I think he is the best possible draw in order to defend the 90 points from last year

He also benefited form some of the guys below him in the rankings like Fish and Paire going out so the only ones he has to worry about overtaking him are Anderson, Baghdatis if he wins the Dallas challenger and Gulbis if he wins a few more rounds so he stands a good chance of being seeded in Miami.

the problems are clear. he just needs a psychologist to overcome this persisting problem. grisho is too emotional and he just got panic when needed to serve for the set. he was scared and in a hurry and that's why the 2nd serve was so risky.

I'm not too concerned about Grigor's mental weakness. It's not easy to get rid off but he (hopefully) will grow out of it. (See my other boy, Ernie, for example).

Grigor seems to be able to handle tough matches with players he believes he can beat: the non top-10. Except Berdych who Grigor knows he can beat so he goes for it without fear.

He needs to be in the position to play them more often, QF, SF, F, and tries to beat them once, twice, etc. Having said so, I'd be worried if he couldn't do it this year or next year. Then we'll know that GTG is not enough.

Tough draw again but he needs to just focus on winning his second round match. If he can play with confidence against his likely R3 opponent, Murray then anything can happen. As with IW, he either has the chance to score an upset or learn from playing against the top players. He should also be looking for revenge from his last match with Murray.

He said he hadn't slept after the Brisbane final. Here's his opportunity to get revenge. First things first, though, he needs to play a solid Round 2 match.

Let's wait and see how his R2 match goes. If he wins that easily and is in good form, I think he can draw on the experience from IW. I've always said he has the game to beat Murray, he just needs to believe in himself and not lose focus at key moments. The disappointing loss to Novak could help him do that.

Murray is a better matchup for Girgor than Djokovic. Djokovic is far harder to attack, while Murray offers a lot more.

Murray is a better matchup for Girgor than Djokovic. Djokovic is far harder to attack, while Murray offers a lot more.

He played him in the final this year and he was serving for the set against Djokovic(despite he wasn't play well), so hoping this gives him a lot of confidence (it's easier to know you served for the set and to forget that game with 4df-s) to be stronger mentally because he has the tennis.

He plays Bolelli next. He's no pushover but it's really a match Grigor should win.

The pressure is off him so he needs to go out there and just believe in himself. Grigor was 64 1-1 and adv on his serve. There past different minutes and the score wasn't moving and so after there was written about the retirement.
I just red Bolelli injured his right wrist. I don't know if he had yet the issue or something happened tonight.


So Grigor has the doubles and the next round is possible to win. I hope he is mentally strong. :angel:

Despite the result and the obvious choke, I really enjoyed today's match. He was ripping winners for most of the 1st set and he went out with exactly the right gameplan. I understand people will be down about the DFs when serving for the set, but at least he is getting himself into these situations and it will just take some time for him to handle his nerves. I would far rather he lost like this than got blown off the court 6-2 6-2.

I feel your pain, man, I really do.
What he needs to do right now is get back out there, play a few weak 250 tournaments, try and get a win under his belt and just keep going. The technical side of his game is solid, he just needs to address the mental part and that happens either with age, when he gets more used to these situations, or with help from his coaching staff, which I hope he is getting.

You see it time and time again that players get really nervous knowing that they can close out a set against the top four. Once he gets a smaller tour title under his belt you'll see his confidence rise in these situations and keep his nerves.

At the beginning of the match, Robbie Koenig, the commentator, said that he talked to Magnus Norman and told him it was bad luck (for Grigor) to draw Murray so early. Magnus said "No, I'm glad. The more Grigor plays these guys, the more he realises how hard he has to work, how much more focus he has to be with his game. The sooner that happens, the better."

Q. He was swinging pretty big, wasn't he? Weathered the storm in the first set.

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah he did a similar thing when I played him in Brisbane, as well. I was hitting the ball quite short early, too, which helped him a bit with that.
Also, it was obviously way cooler today and much slower conditions. The ball wasn't going as quick. I was leaving the ball a bit short. Once I started to improve my depth a bit I made it tough for him and he started to make mother mistakes after that.

Q. When somebody has a bit of a double fault rash like that, do you almost feel you've earned that by pressurizing the serve?

ANDY MURRAY: Yeah, I mean, it depends. Sometimes it can happen through pressurizing the serves; sometimes it happens through nerves; sometimes you can miss a couple of serves by a couple of millimeters.
You know, there's not always a reason for it. But, yeah, today he probably got a little bit nervous, and that helped me.

Q. With Dimitrov making a bit of a breakthrough, do you think he's really improving his game? Is he any better than when you played anymore Brisbane?

ANDY MURRAY: He played very well in Brisbane. It was probably a better match I think in Brisbane than here. Yes, I mean, it's tough. It is tough to tell sometimes.
It's very different conditions here. You know, Brisbane was almost an indoor court, as well, and it probably felt quicker, also.
But I think he will play his best tennis on the faster courts because he has very good timing. He loses his slice a lot. He serves well. He's aggressive. So he will probably play his best tennis on the quicker courts.

i agree with you. it is obvious that grigor has the game to compete with the best. he just needs to solve his mental problem which will happen eventually

Grigor and Freddy won their doubles match 6-4 2-6 10-7 and are into the semifinals. They play FYRSTENBERG/M. MATKOWSKI next. Even if they lose, he has still earned another $29k which is more than he made from singles.
