Argentina is seeded numbah fo' (4). Guille and Gisela gots Germany first. Gisela has singles vs. Anna-Lena Groenefeld aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand Guille has!............Tommy Haas. Pfft. No sweat. Vamos Guille! Then doubles. They gon' win dat too  Then they gots eh, Russia. Dulko cain't beat Myskina  Eeeeeeeeeehhhh Guille vs. Safin. Not betting my ass on that one, but hell. He IS El Mago  Eh I think Guille and Gisela will win the doubles match in that one too. Then they get Italy after that SO! They can advance to the next round no sweat
All dis shit go down...well, starts...January 3rd, 5:30 p.m. Aussie time.

gravity
12-14-2004, 09:54 PM
Errrrrr thanks. :D Haas will be tough, hopefully Gisela will beat Groenfeld and they team well to win the doubles match. If Marat starts the year the way he ended it then Argentina has virtually no chance against Russia. Well Gisela will win a handful of games at the most so it's all down to Guille to prove me wrong. ;)

Unfortunately, I don't think that ABC will be airing the Hopman Cup. I looked on the upcoming schedule for tennis, and I didn't see it. Too bad... but ABC doesn't show smaller tournaments like this so I am not surprised.

It would be nice if they would though huh?! :)

I don't think ABC is showing this. The Tennis Channel is showing live coverage in the US and they typically don't get any coverage if a major network has exclusive rights.

I just checked the upcoming schedule of ESPN, and the next tennis coverage is the Australian Open on January 16th. Kind of a bummer, but honestly, I don't expect to see anything besides the Grand Slams on tv.

My name isn't Booshie. It would be kind of neat if it was though! :) When I was younger, I very much liked to play PeekaBoo. Whenever anyone would play with me, I would laugh hysterically. Everyone thought it was so cute that they started calling me Boo. For many years I was "Boo" to everyone. I didn't mind either..I thought it was cool. After a while that lost its excitement, so we decided to add some variation - Booie, Booster Boo, and Booshie. So now my family calls me Booshie, and many others still call me Boo. Even my boss calls me Boo! It's a unique relationship.

Anyways, thanks for asking!

I'm so happy, Guille played his first mixed doubles match and they won! that's great, I'm gonna post an interview from hopman cup
Congratulations. Welcome back to Perth, get into the locker room. Guillermo doesn’t speak very much English so Davide is going to translate for us. Let’s get to Gisela first. The first singles match is tough at the start of the year. You came out and the forehand was very wobbly in the singles. Were you nervous?

(Dulko) Yes I was a little bit nervous, plus it was the first match of the year, so it is always tough. But I was lucky that in the doubles I played much better, so I am really happy now.

The doubles was just a totally different match, you played unbelievably well and you stood up to the big forehand and the serves and you returned the serves very well and you won the match.

Dulko) Yes. It was tough to return his serve but I was good today. I think I played good doubles, so I am happy now.

Maybe you will be able to convince Guillermo to play more mixed doubles.

(Dulko)Yeah, but he wins too many matches in singles so he can’t play doubles because he would get very tired. But yes I will ask him some time.

Congratulations on a great effort. Good luck for the rest of the week. Well done today in the singles against Davide and he went over on the ankle the first set was over very quickly

(Coria) It was a fun game, I was running everywhere and I really enjoyed to play today.

It is the first time you have played mixed doubles and you did quite well.

(Coria) I was really happy to win my first mixed doubles, here in Perth

Are you enjoying Perth Guillermo? Are you having a lot of fun here with your wife?

(Coria) Yes.

I think he understands a bit more English than you Davide.

(Sanguinetti) It is not the English, it is the Spanish, he is speaking too fast sometimes.

(Coria) he is really happy that his wife is here and he is enjoying Perth and he would like to come back.

He is going to come back and we and going to see a lot more of him during the week. Thank you very much well done.

Argentina finally secure a rubber win

By Karen Lyon
January 3, 2005

After two unsuccessful attempts at winning the Hopman Cup, Argentina won their first ever rubber in the mixed teams competition when Guillermo Coria and Gisela Dulko defeated the Italian pairing of Francesca Schiavone and Davide Sanguinetti, 2-1, yesterday.

Coria, ranked No.7 in the world, has never played a match of mixed doubles throughout his career but he teamed superbly with Dulko. After a tight opening set, Argentina blew the match apart to win 7-5, 6-0.

It was a good day for Coria, the French Open runner-up, who earlier defeated Sanguinetti 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). The Italian appeared to be hampered by an ankle injury from just the second game of the match. But for Coria the victories were the perfect start to 2005 after having shoulder surgery during the off-season.

"It was a fun game, I was running, I was running all game but I really enjoyed playing today," Coria said through Sanguinetti, who acted as an interpreter. "I was really happy to win my first mixed doubles game."

Giselle and Guille were AMAZING! Sure, Safin was still making mistakes, but there were more winners coming from the Argentine rackets than errors from the Russian rackets. According to the stats shown at the end of the match on TV, Argentina had 31 winners to Russias 11 winners and Argentina had 23 Unforced Errors to Russias 28 Unforced Errors. So this definitely wasn't a match given to them. They earned it!

Cute interviews at the end. Marat said he was really tired today and didn't play well. And then he gave Coria his due saying he was running everything down and fighting and "biting" ... to which the crowd laughed and Safin said "Not literally!" to even bigger laughter from the crowd. He always has the best line. LOL.

The interviewer then focused on Giselle and cheered her for playing so well and for returning Marat's serve so well especially in the final game. Guille applauded for her and then picked up his bag as if to leave (so in other words, giving her all the credit). The interviewer called him back and tried to egg him into answering some questions in English, but he asked Giselle to interpret for him. Then the interviewer asked Guille if he was going to ask Giselle to play doubles with him at the Australian Open and he said "maybe" and the interviewer said "See you do speak English. You understand every word I say" and Guille's like "Maybe ... Hello ... morning ... no more". The crowd loved them. I totally agreed.

I am *very* impressed with Dulko and Guille as a team. They totally outplayed the Russians today and I hope they think seriously about playing doubles at the AO. It's been a long time since I have seen Guille play this well. He was magic at the net and I loved watching it. Vamos!

Hopman Cup site just put this up . . . Guille had a good match against Marat. His serve was good - he didn't back himself into any corners - seemed relaxed - I know Marat was off but still he had it together. 2005 is looking good!!

INTERVIEW WITH DULKO AND CORIA . . .

Guillermo Coria & Gisela Dulko (Argentina)
5 January 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You two must be happy having won the tie and having a chance to get to the final.

(Dulko) Yes, I am really happy. I didnít play well in my singles but, Guillermo, he won, so it was 1-1 and then we had the opportunity to play doubles and it was good. I played much, much better than in the singles. (Coria) We hope to do the same with Germany. (Dulko) But I hope to win my singles and then it would be 2-0.

You are in a tough group. Group A. It seems to be the harder of the groups. Do you think, after two rubbers, two ties, that you will be in with a chance to play in the final?

(Coria) I think we have a very tough group and we have to win the two matches. Italy and Russia were especially hard and we made it and we hope to do the same with Germany but Haas is playing really well as is Groenefeld. It is going to be a tough one.

Guillermo, your own form. How happy were you in the way you were hitting the ball?

(Coria) I was very happy with my level although Marat didnít play his best tennis. I didnít play so well in the first set but then I played better in the second.

Guillermo the ATP hand book says that you live with your grandmother in Buenos Aires. What is the story behind that?

(Coria)When I moved Buenos Aires three years ago his grandparents came to Buenos Aires to cook and take of me.

Do you feel like you are in the right form for the Australian Open?

(Coria) Yes, I am happy. I worked hard in December and I am happy with the way I am playing at the moment.

Guillermo, you are very good on clay. How are you on Rebound Ace?

(Coria) I like clay but I also like rebound ace. I have been working hard to get as good on this surface as possible.

There has been a lot of talk about the surface of Melbourne Park. You have played there previously. What do you think of the surface? Is it quick enough? Or should it be quicker? How do you view the court?

(Coria) Last year it was fine and any way you have to adapt to whatever the surface. It is good for one player and not for others.

Have you seen Germany play their two times this week? And if so what do you think of your opponent?

(Dulko) I have never played Anna-Lena before but I know she is very strong. She serves well and it is going to be a tough one. I hope to play much better than in the singles that I have played so far.

Why have you been able to improve your game in the mixed doubles? In both mixed doubles you have played very well.

(Dulko) I think I feel more relaxed. Maybe I have more fun in doubles so I can play better tennis so I am going to try and do that in singles.

Do you get a lot of confidence from being able to return Marat Safinís serve?

(Dulko) Yes. It is good. I thought he was going to hit me with his serve. Like he said I donít think he is at his top level at the moment. But I feel happy. (Coria) It was 180km. (Dulko) That is fast. I feel happy now.

When you play Serena Williams you can just laugh.

(Dulko) Yeah.

Guillermo, do you see Roger Federer as this far away? or this far away? Is he a reachable target for you this year?

(Coria) He is way ahead of the others. The year he had was incredible. He was unbeatable.

What do you need to do? What parts of your game do you need to improve? How do you get there?

(Coria) I just need to work on my level to improve myself to beat all the others not only Federer.

Federer beat you last year in the Final of Hamburg, clay has been said to be Federerís weakest surface. Do you think that you can beat him on clay?

(Coria) He is maybe not as ahead on clay as on other surfaces but you still have to play very, very well to beat him. His backhand used to be his weakness but now it is much better.

Tommy Haas, you have got that match coming up. You have both got something in common; you have both come back from injury. What are you looking forward to in that match later on this week?

(Coria)He is playing very well. He has been playing very, very well the last two matches here. I hope to raise the level. He is a candidate to win the Australian Open.

You donít feel any more pain?

(Coria) No, No. Perfect.

Totally agree with you, Tennyfan. They played really well together and I'm so impressed with the level that Gisela played in mixed doubles. I think she must have felt more comfortable and confident when Guille was right by her side than playing alone in Singles! The interview was not televised where I am. Soooooooo disappointed! Guille is always so cute and shy during interviews.

I saw his after-match interview with Dulko . . . he is so shy . . . and while it is very clear he understands every bit of English spoken, he is as stubborn as a mule and refuses to speak it . . . he's very stubborn . . . it was cute though and he did say 'maybe' (and smiled) to playing mixed doubles at AO . . . just found out that The Tennis Channel will have live coverage of his and Dulko's matches at 4:30 in the morning . . . I am a fan but 4:30 in the morning??

ANOTHER ENTRY FROM HIS SITE . . . .

"Yes, I am really happy with the way I played both matches, the single and the double. In the first one, I was smart, serving not too fast but putting the ball where I wanted. I also think I was able to control Marat's game. In the second one, I was surprised at the in which I volleyed. So yes, I am satisfied".

Guille is right, he has a lot of reasons to be happy. Once again, after dropping the first point, El Mago lift Argentina on his shoulder and to turned around the story, defeated Russia 2-1 and moved one step closer to play the championship match of the Hopman Cup.

Gisella Dulko couldn't do much against 2004 Roland Garros winner Natasha Myskina and lost 6-2 and 6-2. But Guille came to his rescue for the second straight match with an impressive win over Marat Safin by 7-6(4) and 6-1 to tied it up 1-1. Guille and Gisella then defeated Myskina - Safin 6-2 and 6-0 to wrap up the 2-1 victory.

Argentina will now face Germany to decide which team will play the final match against Australia or defending champion United States. Guille will face Tommy Hass after Dulko faces Anna-Lena Groenefeld.

Keys of the match? El Mago served well throughout out the whole game, especially from the non par side, and returned extremely well.
Therefore, he dominated an unstable Safin, who had in his service as his huge ally during the first set and found almost no opposition whatsoever in the second one.

"Surprised? Well, may be a little bit, but I was expecting to improve my level here and now. But I know there is a long way to go for me to dispute the number one position in the ranking. Yes, this win against Safin was very positive, but I have to get better". Guille said to his fans.

"Like in the first set: I can't lose my service right after a get a break against a powerful server like Marat, and definitely not with a double fault. If I want to win tournaments, these are the things I have to work on".

Guille broke Safin's service at his first chance in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead, but the Russian answered right back in the eighth.

But El Mago was sharper in the tiebreak, stayed focused and capitalized on Safin's many unforced errors.

The second set was a different story. Safin decided it was time to hit as hard as he could from all over the court expecting the ball was not going to come back. But it did keep coming back. The Russian lost control and Guille was not about to let him go.

"As I said, I know I have a long way to go. Although I don't expect a lot of results like this one, I see some progress in my game, so I am very optimistic and, of course, very enthusiastic about making the Davis Cup team to play against Czech Republic".

And you all know what is like Guille when hi sets his mind on somethingÖ

I was watching the match. Guille and Haas both played great in the first set. Each held their service games very, very easily (40-0 or 40-15). Guille played one loose game at 6-5 in the 1st set and Haas took advantage of his one and only break point opportunity. Guille was a little slack starting off the 2nd set, but still held his serve and it was 2-2 in the 2nd. Then Haas called in the trainer. The trainer thought it was Coria and went to Coria and then realized it was Haas. There was much debate and the trainer started working on Haas after several minutes. It delayed the game about 7 minutes in all. When Haas came back out, he rallied well, but his serve was off. He double faulted twice and gave Guille the break. The trainer came back out and he quickly defaulted.

They just announced on the Tennis Channel that mixed doubles is not being played and Argentina has clinched the spot in the final tomorrow. Tough way to get to the final. It was a really good match up until then. Guille was playing very, very well winning most of his points on outright winners. Haas was winning most of his points as well with service winners and aces rather than ground strokes, but over all both were playing very, very well.

From Guille's site this morning . .. my they are quick this week!!!

Once again, Guillermo had his back against the wall before his single match in the Hopman Cup. Especially after dropping the first set 7-5. But due to the retirement of Tommy, Argentina defeated Germany 2-1 and advanced to the championship match.

Argentina will defending champion USA or Slovak Republic next Saturday, 10 am local time (Friday 23:00 pm in Argentina).

El Mago was about to serve with a 3-2 advantage in the second set when Hass said no more due a muscular problem.

"I wish I had finished the match", Guille said. "He was playing very well and I was forced to improve my game. Now I can rest and wait to see whom are we facing in the final", he added.

According to the Tennis Channel, even if they had a substitute player handy, Germany would have been eliminated from the final if they substituted. Same thing happened with Phillipousses (sp?). They called in a replacement and they will plau the next tie so the 1st place team can be determined (apparently there's a 3 way tie for 1st in that group), but Aus is eliminated from playing in the final because of the substitute. So if a sub came in for Germany, even if they beat Argentina in this tie, Argentina would still be 1st in the group with 2 wins and Italy/Russia having no wins at that point. Did that make sense?

Guille's Girl
01-06-2005, 02:50 PM

Alita, do you know the story behind your new avatar? During one of Guille's matches this week, the chair ump overruled a ball and called it in after the line judge called it out. The ball was definitely out (as showed by shot spot), but Guille thought it was in and argued a bit. He has a 'nagging' back injury . . . this was off the web . . .

PERTH, Australia (AFP) - Argentina's Guillermo Coria was forced to withdraw from the dead mixed doubles rubber in the final of the Hopman Cup mixed teams tennis tournament after suffering a back injury.

Coria, who had earlier lost his singles rubber to the Slovak Republic's Dominik Hrbaty in straight sets, had been getting treatment on the injury throughout the week.

Hopman Cup spokesman Rob Casey said Coria had suffered a niggling back strain but the injury was not serious.

"I don't think it will preclude him from playing in his next event," Casey said. The Argentinian world number seven is top seed in the Heineken Open starting in Auckland on Monday.

The Slovaks won the Hopman Cup final 3-0.

Ah thank you Boliviana.

Yes Fab, he played really good this week. A 3-1 match record for the start of the year is not bad by any means. Vamos Guille!!!!!!

It's interesting - on his site - they've been so efficient putting stuff up after matches this week. Not this time. Spanish or English site - it's the statement after the Tommy Haas match.

I wonder if he has had to change his serve to compensate for his shoulder surgery and in the course of that developed a back problem.

How much ya wanna bet he pulls from Heineken Open??

If I had any money I would bet . .. but of course now it is monday he has yet to pull out so we'll agree you won.

BUT the bad boy has not the best track record of staying in tournaments lately so it is understandable that I would fear the worst and hope for the best. I am tired of being disappointed. It was a heartbreaking year for anyone associated with him or cheering for him.
