Yes, it is time for this thread to make a strong comeback after suffering in the hands of a rabid Fedtard and sworn Nadal hater () for months.

as it is time for Rafito (:hearts: ) to make his strong comeback after suffering from serious injuries for so many many months (:sobbing:).

According to the information available at this point, Rafa is competing in Vina del Mar next week. His first match will be on Wednesday February 6th at 6pm local time* :bigclap:

*11pm for us Andreea and Maria (the rest of you can figure it out yourselves :p)

I agree. It just automatically popped up below the board, so I took a look. I have recently started to play some chess again. So I'm interesten in any chess related stuff (as long as it is understandable for a shitty player like me :o) especially, I must improve my middle game :o:o:o

I saw the movie Secratariat this weekend about a horse that's one of the very best racing horses of all time. For some odd reason, I'm not that much into horse racing itself but I've enjoyed several movies about race horses (Seabiscuit is another awe inspiring horse, grandson of Man O'War, another horse that was one of the very best of all time). There's just something special in watching a fine race horse in action.

I'd taped it during the Christmas holidays but only now got to see it (needed a pick-me-up after that  AO)
:inlove: What a horse Secratariat was, though. What a champion.

Also Hilde, I always thought the Hazard stuff was a load of tripe. That ball 'kid' was out to cause trouble, got his moment of fame and made much more if it than it was. Maybe Eden should have let the ref deal with the situation but it's not like he actively and maliciously kicked him

Made to wonder once more. Somedays he feels pain in his knee, why then play 3 events in a month and doubles in Chile? He truly is Seles' equal when it comes to scheduling, and there was no worse player. Doubles should be put on the back burner this year, im(hopeful)o forever. Scrap IW, Madrid & Canada too. I seriously doubt he'd come back if he was out for another 6+ month stretch. It's worrisome after all this time he still feels pain. Having wrote that I cannot wait for a week today!

From an article - (this will go down well with GM's 'moonballing brigade')

However, since he recovered from a double knee injury and started to play again last November, the Spaniard has spent most of his time trying to adapt to the new tool of his trade: Babolat’s Aeropro Drive racquet.
According to Babolat, the new racquet and new strings give "more power and more control" to the Spaniard’s shots. "More top spin, he already has a lot of that, but he wants more," he said.

(Wilander cannot open his mouth without mentioning Fed.)
Questions focus on the winner of a record seven titles at the French Open: at 26, will he be able to replicate the form and results of his best years? Several top commentators have doubts.
"I don’t think he necessarily needs time to be Nadal, but I think he needs some time for the other players to think of him as the old Nadal, because I think players lose a lot of respect: not respect for him as a person, but respect for his level," Mats Wilander said.
The Swede, a three-time French Open winner and former world No1, is sure that even if his name is Rafael Nadal, "he’s still an outsider" in Paris this year, with Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Federer the men to beat.
"This is the year of Novak and Andy’s chance to win the French, and Roger’s already won it, but it’s obviously his chance too."
Tennis legend Andre Agassi, another former world No1, agrees. He thinks Nadal cannot be expected to return to top form before 2014.

We'll see if Rafa will go with a more reasonable schedule, and let's see first how many matches he can get under is belt in the SA swing.

Castafiore
01-31-2013, 08:46 AM
The "shitty schedule" thing is something haters bring up who haven't really looked at his schedule in recent years. His 2012 schedule was lean with no excess on it.
The only thing you could argue about was Barcelona perhaps.

The doubles is fun training. There's no pressure in it. It's gaining match experience in a fun way. Look at the players he is teaming up with: Nalbandian, Monaco. Both great friends of Rafa.

The SA events make absolute sense. If he's going to get back into things after a long recovery period, he is going to have to do it on a surface that works best for his body. Thus, SA.

---
MTF is playing up again. The website is doing some weird things.

---
Djokovic is in Belgium since yesterday (I think)
--> So, Djokovic brought two personal bodyguards with him + a team from the Serbian police came with him (!) + the walloon tennis federations hired 13 security agents for him.

Bit excessive.

mseles1
01-31-2013, 09:19 AM
'The "shitty schedule" thing is something haters...' - I'm in no way a hater, furthest thing from it! I don't think Barcelona was the problem in 2012, IW/Miami with doubles & Halle w/doubles a different story. The point I was trying to make was, the man himself said somedays he felt pain in his knee - I cannot fathom how playing 3/4 weeks is a good remedy for that, even on clay. Who knows maybe Rafa put it out there that he sometimes feels pain to make a potential hc event withdrawal more plausible? Hopefully Rafa knows best and the 'outsider' is brilliant once more on the clay.

Castafiore

Many athletes from many sports + sport doctors have said that sport is healthy for you but top sport isn't.

Many top athletes perform their sport in pain. If you want to reach the top of a sport, you need to push and push yourself, you need to find the edge and see if you can move that edge further and further. So, they push their body into doing things that's beyond healthy.

The difference is that Rafa talks more about it than others.

Agreed about the schedule, this is not 2005 anymore :wavey:
The schedule card is played by the haters in order not to talk about the real issues: the number of mandatory tournements with fat-assed directors whose interests count more than those of the players and the predominance of HC.
You could never win the haters: he was treated as a whiner when he talked about the above issues and now, that he has a more clay orientated schedule he's a coward
You could argue about the style of play but he is what he is BECAUSE of THIS style of playing, nothing important to do about that.
In the last years very few tournaments could be considered as "unnecessary", Rotterdam 2009 comes to mind but he even skips some mandatories, he barey plays Paris, for example and I'm pretty sure that, if Madrid wasn't in Spain, he would skip it as well :ras:
If healthy, he would never skip Barcelona, it's his club, FFS!!!! and we all saw( some very painfully so :sobbing:) that, when he needs to skip it, he skips it

Castafiore

when he needs to skip it, he skips it
Indeed. That's what he learned in recent years: he may put tournaments, doubles and singles, on his schedule but he skips it when he gets a warning from his body via his doctors that he should rest.

Djokovic is in Belgium since yesterday (I think)

--> So, Djokovic brought two personal bodyguards with him + a team from the Serbian police came with him (!) + the walloon tennis federations hired 13 security agents for him.

Bit excessive.

You planning to go to Charleroi to throw some rotten eggs at him? :D ;)
LOL, the Serbian police team's there rather for the well-known Serbian tennis hooligans maybe. ;) Better not confront them when you go there or then have your 'best' handbag ready. :D ;)

Star is miffed

I will try me best to bring her back.

Another recent anniversary was the 70 years of the battle of Stalingrad. This is the ultimatum the Soviets sent demanding the surrender of the 6th Army:

"To the Commander of the Sixth Army encircled at Stalingrad, General Paulus, or his deputy.

The Sixth German Army, the units ofthe 4th Tank Army and their reinforcements have been completely surrounded since November 23rd, 1942. The forces ofthe Red Army have drawn a secure ring around this German army. All hopes of rescue by means of a German offensive from the south and south-west have proved unfounded.

The forces which were rushed to your aid have been destroyed by the Red Army, and the remnants of these forces are withdrawing towards Rostov. The German transport planes which are supplying you with a bare minimum of food, ammunition and fuel are being forced to move between airfields, and to fly from great distances to reach your positions. Moreover, the Russian air force is inflicting great losses on Gennan transport planes and their crews. Air transport is unlikely to continue for much longer.

Your encircled troops are in a grave situation. They are suffering from hunger, sickness and cold. The harsh Russian winter is only just beginning: hard frosts, cold winds and snowstorms are still to come, but your soldiers do not have winter uniforms and are living in unsanitary conditions. You, as commander, and all the officers of the surrounded troops know very well that there is no longer any realistic possibility of breaking through the encirclement. Your position is hopeless and further resistance is pointless."

...

"We expect your written reply on january 9th, 1943, at 15.00 hours, Moscow time. It should be brought by a representative whom you have personally appointed, and who should proceed in a car flying a white flag along the road from the Konny railway halt to the Kotluban station. Your representative will be met by Russian officers in Region B, 0.5 kilometres south-east of railway halt No. 564.

If you choose to reject our proposal for your capitulation, be warned that the forces of the Red Army and the Red Air Force will be compelled to take steps to destroy the surrounded German troops, and that you will bear the responsibility for their annihilation.

Signed,
Colonel-General of Artillery, Voronov;
Supreme Commander of the Don Front, Lieutenant-General Rokossovsky."

Surrounded, battle-weary and exhausted, the Germans faced death or captivity. Captivity meant almost certain death. That is quite an elaborate way to say "You are fucked".

There is a trilogy on the Battle of Stalingrad by David Glantz:

To the Gates of Stalingrad: Soviet-German Combat Operations, April-August 1942 http://www.amazon.com/Gates-Stalingrad-Soviet-German-Operations-April-August/dp/0700616306/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y/187-3697023-3026836

Armageddon in Stalingrad: September-November 1942 (The Stalingrad Trilogy, Volume 2) http://www.amazon.com/Armageddon-Stalingrad-September-November-Trilogy-Studies/dp/0700616640

AFTER STALINGRAD: The Red Army's Winter Offensive 1942-1943 http://www.amazon.com/AFTER-STALINGRAD-Winter-Offensive-1942-1943/dp/1907677054/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_z/187-3697023-3026836

I have not read any of it but saw an extensive interview of Glantz. I have read "When Titans clashed" about WW II on the Eastern Front.

Orphaned elephant ‘dying of a broken heart’

The orphaned elephant whose plight touched the nation when he was seen trying to wake his poisoned mother is feared to be dying from a broken heart.

The Borneo pygmy calf is losing weight fast and experts say it will be a ‘challenging task’ to keep him alive as he is consuming only half the amount of milk he should do.

Named Joe, the three-month-old animal is said to have been left traumatised by an 800km (500-mile) road trip to a quarantine facility and has lost 10kg (1st 8lb) since his arrival.

He has a new lawyer. His former one couldn't take it any more and said that Dutroux should never be released because he's a psychopath.
The new lawyer says that he feels that he has a case to get him released.

That's never going to happen, though.
Should it happen, all hell is going to break lose in Belgium.
