Sasha was excellent! :bounce: I know it's only a .03 lead over Irina, but it will give her a lot of confidence for the long program, and it will be very exciting to watch the battle for the medals. Can't wait! :yeah:

Arakawa was extremely gracious and a delight to watch, but I honestly don't think she has a shot against those two (at least not yet, anyway).

After finally watching Irina Slutskaya and Sasha Cohen skate their short programs on NBC's tape dealayed coverage I think Sasha should have a bigger lead over Irina. Irina skated very well and deserved her very good score. But Sasha skated a brialliant and flawless program yet is only .03 points ahead of Slutskaya. Shouldn't Sasha have a bigger lead over Irina than .03?

And I'm shocked Canada and Russia are playing a quarterfinal game in men's hockey. I thought that might be the gold medal game. But Canada lost 2 games in the preliminary round while Slovakia and Finland had great pleminary rounds throwing the quarterfinal matchups into dissaray.

Sasha is a lovely young woman and a wonderful skater, but she puts a lot of pressure on herself. This pressure plus the expectations people have on her to win because she does skate so well has been Sasha's undoing. She normally starts out great, but then doesn't have the great finish she needs to win a competition  She finally got the victory at the U.S. Nationals this year, but I don't know if she can keep herself together to win an Olympic Gold Medal

Mae, Sasha skates early in the final group for the long program while Iriina skates last like just like in Salt Lake City 4 years ago when Irina had the Olympic gold medal in her grasp until she skated an average long program letting Sarah Hughes steal the gold medal. Advantage Sasha.

I hope so, but how long have you been following Sasha?
Usually Sasha makes mistakes to take herself out of a chance to win. So normally it is not so much what the other skaters do or don't do, but it comes down to Sasha herself.

Totally agree. Sasha was brilliant.

But that close margin will make both of them excel in the long program; they'll know that the tiniest error will cost them the gold.
(And that's not good for Sasha, cause as Mae mentioned, she usually cracks under pressure. But I'm hopeful tomorrow will be different. Go Sasha! :) )

Mae, maybe the time is right for Sasha to become the Queen of figure skating. :) But I am concerned about her not practicing yesterday. I guess she wanted the rest. I hope it comes down to Sasha and Irina. I would be happy for either lady winning the gold medal. But watch out for Arakawa who's in third place heading into the long program. She's dangerous and has the talent to win the gold medal in Torino.

Anyway, as expected Sasha cracked under pressure; which was a real pity considering her extraordinary routine (I was amazed she still could find the heart to carry on as she did after falling so early on).

I was surprised by Irina's fall; I thought she'd pull a Plushy and get into robot-mode; at least she showed she's human and felt the pressure too. ;) I'm a bit sorry for her since it was probably her last chance at Olympic gold, but hey...

Arakawa benefited from the whole situation, of course. Had neither of the other 2 fallen, she'd be 3rd for sure. But she totally deserved it; not only was she nearly flawless, she showed nerves of steel under the circumstances. :yeah: And surprises are always exciting to witness, right? ;)

Congrats to the lovely Shizuka Arakawa on winning the gold medal. She was in good position to do so after the short program. But I'm sad Sasha Cohen and Irina Slutskaya couldn't skate clean programs. :( I was worried that Sasha was tired and Irina wouldn't be able to handle skating last with the Olympic gold medal on the line because the pressure would again be too much for her like it was 4 years ago in Salt Lake City. Unfortunately my worries became reality. I couldn't watch this live because in America NBC television will show the long program on tape delay. I'm not sure I want to watch it on tape delay tonight after my 2 favorites Sasha and Irina fell. Shizuka deserved the gold medal because she skated very well and skated a clean program while Sasha and Irina didn't.

guida, Shizuka didn't have enormous pressure on her to win the gold medal the way Sasha adn Irina did and that was to her benefit.

guida, are the World Championships are less than a month away? That means some of the tired figure skaters will drop out of that event. I wonder if Sasha will drop out of Worlds. She seems to be tired. She didn't even practive the day after the sort program. And I wonder how Sasha's fragile gymnast type of body can hold up under he grueling figure skating schedule and all the travelling she does. The bigger and stronger girls like Arakawa and others will always have the strength and stamina advantage over the very petite and slight of might Sasha. And Sasha not being able to put it all together in Torino has taken a toll on me too. ;)

Yes Mae, you were right about Sasha.

On a side note I hope Sasha doesn't turn pro. She's only 21 and she's gotten a little better as a figure skater since Salt Lake City 4 years ago and she still might get a little better as a figure skater in the next 4 years. And the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics will be in the same time zone she lives in. Thus Sasha would not be worn out by travelling from California where to lives to Vancouver, Canada where the 2010 Winter Olympics are.

As for Irina Slutskaya, she's 6 years older than Sasha and she most certainly doesn't have another Winter Olympics in her. I hope Irina turns pro and makes some good money and lives a nice life. She deserves it. She's had her health problems as has her mother. Now it's time for Irina to taker care of herself for her future and that means turning pro.

Cohen planning to skate in world championships

TURIN, Italy (AP) -- Olympic silver medalist Sasha Cohen plans to skate in next month's world championships, along with U.S. teammates Kimmie Meissner and Emily Hughes.

Cohen, who won her first U.S. title this year and is a two-time world silver medalist, will face Olympic champion Shizuka Arakawa of Japan at worlds in Calgary from March 20-26.

Asked Friday where she goes from here, Cohen said: "To the world championships in Calgary. To keep improving, see where I can go. Take it day by day and see where the road goes."

Cohen, 21, has not committed to further competition beyond Calgary. Both Meissner, who finished sixth in Turin, and Hughes, who was seventh, plan to remain eligible, their sights set on the 2010 Vancouver Games.

LOL I just skimmed over the last 10 or so pages of this thread (admittedly, mostly looking for photos), but I think I am easily impressed compared to most of you  But, there's a reason for this I think.

-The only time I see figure skating in Australia, is on television, and when the winter olympics come around.
-I hadn't heard of the non-Plushenko/Joubert guys. So, I had both the 'wow factor' and the good-looking-ness of the guys to work with :tape:

Jeffrey Buttle was memorable to me because:
-His hair :awww: I just want to mess it up with my fingers, like adults do to little kids!
-His facial expressions when his scores came up. Nodding. Waves to camera. Raised Eyebrowsas scores shown. Says hi to camera and waves. Open mouth+raised eyebrows. Smile. Then the expression that goes something like this "Well, that's not bad really. I mean, I DID fall on my ass, so I should probably take what I can get".
-His boofy shirt, not entirely unlike Seinfelds pirate-shirt.
-His cuteness. Think along the lines of Jason James Richter (Free Willy), He's like the boys I'd have crushes on when I was little. Not really boys, but...characters in movies  with his fluffy hair, bright eyes and charming smile.

Oh Just realised I didn't mention skating ability... that thing he did, when he was skating sideways in a circle, at like, a 45 degree angle :D

As I said, easily impressed, and not educated on this sport  I am kind of pissed that Plushenko didn't do that funky thing with his leg.

Well for me it's not a question of Shizuka's technical ability; I'm sure she'd be able to go for a more difficult routine and be successful. I personally think Sasha has a greater artistic quality, she's more flexible, more expressive and her figure perfectly suited to ice skating. I tend to value that more than technical perfection.

But of course, I'm not a judge, so... ;)

I personally think Sasha has a greater artistic quality, she's more flexible, more expressive and her figure perfectly suited to ice skating. I tend to value that more than technical perfection.

But of course, I'm not a judge, so... ;)

Suzi, thanks for the article (Cat, guess it answers your question about the World's. :) )

I was more impressed with Shizuka's flexibility and her artistry. I do like Sasha but she was a mere girl to the woman that is Shizuka. :inlove:

Joubert choisit “ Matrix ”
( 09/03/2006 )

Source: http://www.nrco.com/
go first to sports, then to other sports and then to patinage artistique

That's a local French paper from the Poitiers region. For those who don't speak French: The essence is that Brian will take up Matrix again for the champioship in Calgary.

Yep, it's camp, but it's also one of the best Brian routines ever! :yeah::hearts::worship:
If only he could be this relaxed in the World Champs... *sigh*

(lol, the lady commentator was in some sort of ecstatic trance; she was nearly screaming in delight :haha: )

Oh yeah, it's worth it! The woman says things like: Look how beautiful he is! Look at that beautiful smile! How charming! Stuff like that. :haha:
And in the end, she screams hysterically: THAT'S IT BRIAN, THAT'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!!! Going totally nuts there (I bet she fell off her chair or something... :rolls: :rolls: )

You know, here in Portugal we have a woman commentator on Eurosport who has a crush on Lambiel and it's always hilarious whenever she sees him skate; she just can't help drooling all over him. :haha:

:wavey: You are totally right, she gets rather enthusiastic and that is an understatement, but she is not totally off the mark. I have to say that with the music, the programme was much better than without, it certainly matches his styleof skating.
