hey 13 not 30 :p

Ok what the fuck is wrong with him? Can't he focus for once?
Really I am very very dissapointed :sobbing: 4th :bigcry:

You know when he finnished the programme our commentator said: " Is it possible that the 007 Agent doesn't want an Olympic medal?" and the other one said " Of course he does, just not gold silver or bronze"

4th is just way behind, I know that he isnt too far from Weier and Lambiel ( :shout: ), but his lp was always ( except Budapest) worse than the short one :bugcry: *heartbroken* OMFB I am so maddddddddddd. But i tought his programme wasn't that bad besides that hand :(, his steps let me down anyways :crying2:

I miss his quads from 2 years ago, why can't he jump like then anymore??????? :bigcry: :tears:

I heard his interview and i don't think he was ok with it. It was actually the first time that I heard him saying: "Yes, I am dissapointed." THE JUDGING SYSTEM

In the past, judges gave one mark for technical merit and one for artistic impression, with 6.0 the maximum that could be awarded in each case.

Under the new, more complicated system, there is now a technical score and a score for 'programme components'.

Technical score

Each jump, spin, lift or step sequence is given a 'base value' before the competition begins. A triple axel, for example, is worth 7.5.

It is the job of a 'technical specialist' to decide during a skater's routine which move has been executed - whether it is a double or a triple axel, for example. Two assistants are on hand to correct any errors.

As that happens, the nine judges - drawn randomly from a panel of 12 - each decide how well the element has been executed.

They use a scale ranging from -3 to +3. The highest and lowest of these nine marks are taken away, and the average of the remaining marks taken.

This average is then added to the 'base value' to obtain a mark for each element, which goes towards the final score.

Program components

The old artistic impression mark has been replaced by a set of five judging criteria, each with a scoring scale ranging from 0.25 to a maximum of 10.

Skating skills - reflects the general quality of skating and the balance between the skills of the two partners.

Transitions - covers how well the skater has executed the steps which link each element.

Performance/execution - assesses style, posture and changes in speed. For pairs and ice dancing, it covers the balance between the performance of the two partners and the distance between them.

Choreography - marks how well the movements, steps and music work together as a whole.

Interpretation/timing - reflects how well the skater works in time with the music. For pairs it is the unison, and for dance the relationship between the two partners in interpreting and skating in time with the music.
In the compulsory programme for ice dance, where all competitors must do the same routine, Transitions and Choreography are replaced by a Timing category, which judges how well they have skated in time with the music.

- Heres a rundown

Ironically, I didn't even get to see Pluchy's programme, but judging from the marks I realize he was amazing. I know some say (and Joubert was the first to say it...lol..) that his marks were too big, but reading the Eurosport article "Perfect Plushenko" I kinda tend to believe that Eurosport is more objective than the Joubert fans... However, as Evgeni said, we're gonna talk more after the long programme...
I just have to say a few things before ending this:
I know that before Yagudin's withdraw male figure skating fans were divided in these 2 camps: the "pluchy fans" and the "alexei fans". I'v felt the tension on my own skin, believe me! My younger sis was an alexei fan, while i have been with evgeni all the way, ever since he was 15-16 years old... Now, most of Yagudin's fans support Joubert, basically bacause of his looks (no offence, but i was reading this board and saw all of those silly replies on how Joubert or Lambiel look better etc etc....lol.... )
I am sincerely amuzed by this, but at the same time i think it's sad that a guy of Evgeni's talent and giant value in figure skating is hated by some of the fans of this sport because he has a big nose or small eyes or whatever, or bacause he was Alexei's main competitor! Saying something like "I've never liked Plushenko" is just nonsense, it's ridiculous...Think of your motives again, cuz they surely have nothing to do with what this guy does on ice....
I mean common guys! For this sport's sake! He's a giant! Yagudin was another giant! You can't deny one's value because he's not the best looking.....
I simply adore Evgeni Plushenko for the level he's gotten figure skating to. No matter what happens tomorrow, i'll always keep him in mind as this sport's most impressive figure...:)

Be the best, Evgeni!

Perfect Plushenko

Reuters - 14/02/2006

Olympic favourite Yevgeny Plushenko skated his foes into the ice with a personal best short programme of 90.66 points on Tuesday to take a nearly inusurmountable lead into Thursday's free skate finale. With 80 points American Johnny Weir was in second in front of World Champion Stephane Lambiel.

The Russian, silver medallist behind compatriot Alexei Yagudin in Salt Lake City, put his recent health woes behind him to perform a near flawless display.

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/14/252625-833238-151-113.jpg

Weir unexpectedly finished second after all the other title contenders faltered. Switzerland's Lambiel was third with 79.04.

"Today I showed the best result of this season. I'm very happy I showed the best result in the Olympic Games," Plushenko said abruptly before barging in to the dressing room.

Plushenko stepped on to the ice looking tense and took his time skating to his starting position.

He began his routine with a high-flying quadruple-triple toeloop combination and once he nailed two more triple jumps, the 23-year-old loosened up.

The former triple world champion's fast-paced step sequences and captivating choreography to Puccini's Tosca raised roars of approval from the fans.

Punching the air in delight, Plushenko skated off blowing kisses to his fans, knowing his rivals would have to come up with something special to surpass him.

No one came close.

The field included world champion Lambiel and 2004 European gold medallist Brian Joubert, yet it was livewire Weir who sneaked into contention with his clean if not daring programme.

AMERICAN 'WILDCARD'

The American, who declared himself a 'wildcard' for a medal, was the only competitor among the top four not to attempt a quadruple jump but he was rewarded for his error-free display.

Despite his placing, Weir was not about to get carried away.

"I'm certainly (surprised) going into second place ahead of the world champion," said Weir.

"I'm not going to count my eggs before they hatch. If Plushenko falls three times (in the free skate), maybe, just maybe, somebody can slip past."

Lambiel had been expected to be Plushenko's main challenger but a knee injury he suffered two weeks ago sapped his confidence.

The European silver medallist doubled his opening triple Axel before completing the rest of his programme cleanly.

Frenchman Joubert took centre stage dressed in black and white as Secret Agent 007.

But he began his energetic performance to the James Bond soundtrack by putting his hand down on his opening quadruple jump and downgraded the next jump to a double.

His score of 77.77 left him trailing fourth.

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/14/252643-833423-303-227.jpg

Joubert, one of only two men to have beaten Plushenko since the 2002 Olympics, was not impressed by the five-times European champion's performance.

"I thought he'd get 85 or 86. When I saw 90 I was surprised," he said. "I think it's too much. The judges like him so that's good for him."

Zhang Dan injury confirmed

http://i.eurosport.com/2006/02/13/252280-830983-317-238.jpg

China's Zhang Dan, who won a silver medal after lifting herself up from a crashing fall in the pairs figure skating to finish her programme, has suffered a ligament strain in her left knee, Xinhua news agency said.

"We took Zhang Dan to a local hospital and had a full check-up," Xinhua quoted Ji Chunnan, a doctor in the Chinese camp in Turin, as saying. "The result was quite optimistic. There is a ligament strain in her left knee."

Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao, contenders for the gold medal, won silver on Monday when an attempted quadruple Salchow spin went wrong.

Zhang landed in the splits and had to stop. Five minutes later the 20-year-old returned to the ice and continued to skate, complete with twists and throws, to the delight of the crowd who cheered her every move.

"There is still pain in my knee but I feel better now," Zhang Dan was quoted as saying on Tuesday.

"The doctor advised me no walking for five days ... I hope the injury will heal in time to compete at the 2006 World Championships (March 20-26 in Calgary)."

Figure Skating Scoring Found to Leave Too Much to Chance

The overseers of international figure skating scoring instituted a new system in 2004, designed to reduce the chances of vote fixing or undue bias after the scandal during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002. Under the old rules eight known national judges scored a program up to six points with the highest and lowest scores dropped. Under the new rules, 12 anonymous judges score a program on a 10 point scale. A computer then randomly selects nine of the 12 judges to contribute to the final score.

The highest and lowest individual scores in the five judging categories are then dropped and the remaining scores averaged and totaled to produce the final result.
This random elimination of three judges results in 220 possible combinations of nine-judge panels, explains John Emerson, a statistician at Yale University. And according to his statistical analysis of results from the shorts program at the Ladies' 2006 European Figure Skating Championships the computer's choice of random judges can have a tremendous--and hardly fair--impact on the skaters' rankings. "Only 50 of the 220 possible panels would have resulted in the same ranking of the skaters following the short program," Emerson writes in a statement announcing his findings.

In fact, the final scores of this particular shorts program had five skaters within six points of each other: Irina Slutskaya at 66.43, Elena Sokolova at 60.88, Sarah Meier at 60.87, Elena Gedevanishvili at 60.19 and Carolina Kostner at 60.04. Although Slutskaya would have won the competition no matter what, the ranking of the following skaters varied widely depending on the judges selected. Emerson notes that Meier was particularly lucky since more than half of randomly selected scores would have placed her lower. Gedevanishvili, on the other hand, was particularly unlucky, because more than half of randomly selected scores would have ranked her in second or third place.
"A close figure skating competition will be decided by a computer choosing an anonymous panel of nine judges," Emerson says. "In fairness to the skaters, all twelve scores should be used in awarding medals. Let's leave the computer out of it." The statistics behind Emerson's analysis can be found at: http://www.stat.yale.edu/~jay/EC2006/ --David Biello

Lambiel OK despite large fall

Reuters - 15/02/06

World champion Stephane Lambiel will be fit to compete in the men's free skate on Thursday despite crashing to the ice during a training session at the Winter Olympics on Wednesday. "He fell while attempting the triple Axel but we took care of it," his coach Peter Gruetter told Reuters.

Lambiel injured his right knee two weeks ago and had raised doubts about his ability to compete in the men's competition.

The Swiss has often had problems with landing the triple Axel and during Tuesday's short programme he only doubled it.

But Gruetter is confident Wednesday's mishap will not affect Lambiel, who lies third behind favourite Yevgeny Plushenko of Russia and three-times American champion Johnny Weir.

"It was the same knee he injured again but we did some physiotherapy and he is ok. The crash looked worse than it was," Gruetter said.

45-year anniversary of figure skating tragedy
All 18 members of U.S. skating team killed in plane crash

TURIN, Italy - Wednesday marks the 45-year anniversary of the biggest tragedy in U.S. Figure Skating history.

On this day in 1961, a plane carrying the U.S. team to the 1961 world championships crashed in a field near Brussels. All 18 skaters were killed. Sixteen coaches and other judges and international skating figures also died.

One of those killed was Maribel Vinson Owen, who shares the record of nine U.S. women’s titles with Michelle Kwan.

News of the crash reached the world championships during practice for the women’s figures competition.

The world championships were canceled out of respect for the Americans. That’s the only time since World War II that the worlds haven’t been held.

I am so glad to hear she is OK! I have no idea how she got up and kept going after a fall like that. When is aw the wall she fell, I was worried she'd broken her leg, torn her knee ligaments or dislocated it, so glad it is not major. Still, to have skated like she did with a Ligament Strain is amazing - I have had two and they are unbelievably painful, so she is amazing

I still hope Johnny Weir can somehow beat Plushenko for the Gold and that Lambiel gets the silver. *hides from all the Plushy fans*

Today on Pete Bodo's blog :)

This guy seems not to be a big fan of figure skating :o

'The Olympic Games are on, so let's forget tennis for a moment. How are you all feeling about these winter Game?

I got home last night, all fired up to watch the Olympics, now that that Davis Cup is over. . . I haven’t seen any of the women’s’ downhill competition – an awesome event, made that much more intriguing this year by a spate of crashes in training runs – or much of the highly underrated short-track skating (a race with real people skating/skiing/running against each other, rather than a clock, is always superior in my book). And what do I get when I flick on the tube?

Figure skating. Men’s short program.

Call me crazy, but does it strike anyone else that it’s just a little bit weird to watch a bunch of men flitting around on the ice, swanning and swooning, dressed in costumes featuring sequins and fishnets? I mean, am I missing something here? Aren’t you supposed wear a uniform in sports, not a costume? The whole thing looked like a drag show, which is okay, I guess, if that’s what you’re into. But this is supposed to be the Olympic Games, right?

And then one of these skaters gets some NBC face time and starts bashing “Republicans” and babbling about how much he loves being who he is (or some equally confusing New Age garbage), after which he segues into comparing his program to a shot of vodka instead of a snort of coke, or visa versa, I forget which, but it made me wonder – why am I watching and listening to this self-infatuated, arrogant little jerk?

I think they should throw figure skating out of the Olympics. It isn’t really sports, any more than ballet, modern dance – or drag shows – are. This whole thing with costumes is crazy, even when it’s women wearing them. Why should you get jock points because some designer came up with a better looking costume than the next lass - or lad - has? If anything, they should all be forced to wear the same, simple kit, so that people can focus on what is – presumably – the important part: skating proficiency.

For the credibility of sports, they should throw out all the men’s events but still allow pairs (and what’s with this reactionary mixed gender thing; why shouldn’t two men – or two women – be allowed to skate as pairs, if we’re being so progressive?). It’s not like this would kill the “sport” either; you have a flourishing fan base and a huge, official infra-structure that puts on all kinds of skating events, right up to world championships. Tennis wasn’t in the Olympics until relatively recently, right?

But the real problem posed by skating is bigger. The real problem is that the Olympic Games allows sports that are judged by humans, who invariably exercise their subjective, aesthetic preferences. Aren’t you sick of the endless scoring controversies (never mind the outright examples of corruption, horse-trading for scores, logrolling, etc.?)

Subjective scoring goes against the grain of sports, period. The whole idea of sports is to compete against an objective standard; a scoring system that makes you a winner or loser against someone else, or a clock. A part of me would hate to see all the human judgment-based sports go, because I like snowboarding and freestyle skiing, and it would really, really hurt to see boxing have to go.

Call me Judas; I’ll give up boxing if you can get figure skating out of my line of vision.

There’s my Olympics rant, now let’s get back to the tennis, shall we?'
A piece of bullshit, but I admit that I share his opinion regarding the problematic of human judgement...

Ok, talk after you see the programme, no one said he wasnt the best yday, just imo and from what you say Brian's the mark was too big.

Now, most of Yagudin's fans support Joubert, basically bacause of his looks (no offence, but i was reading this board and saw all of those silly replies on how Joubert or Lambiel look better etc etc....lol.... )

Of course you missed the posts that said that we most like them for the way they skate, not only for thier looks

I've said it here a lot of times, that i don't like Plushenko for his too feminine way of skating imo, not cause he is not good looking  Then explain why i don't like Lambiel.

I simply adore Evgeni Plushenko for the level he's gotten figure skating to. No matter what happens tomorrow, i'll always keep him in mind as this sport's most impressive figure...:)

The most impressive figure of figure skating is Alexei Yagudin. But of course you can't be objective.

you must be a big fan of plushy but i must say that you can't blame others that they don't like yours fav....i saw the prog of plushy and i must say that he was really good ...maybe the music wasn't the best for his performance....it was slower than his enrgy on the ice....i will give the main reason i don't like plushy: he is not sending me any message....he has perfect performances but i don't feel that vibe when he skates...and we must admit that ice skating is like the balet....and yes i must say that last night bri felt like he had no energy....maybe i said in this post many useless things but i must say again : NOT EVERYONE MUST BE A PLUSHENKO FAN!
:yeah:

There's nothing wrong in saying someone is cute, when that someone ACTUALLY is.
No one where deny's Plushenko's talent. He is super talented, and he is the best in what he does. Yes. But me, and I talk only for myself here, I have other favorite. And I don't see anything wrong with that. He is a amazing, and he will win the gold medal tomorow. But you can't ask us to stop supporting our favorites, because of your giant.

Ok, he is a bit arrogant but he is right :p Love ya Bri
