Hughes on standby as Kwan considers quitting
Sat 11 Feb, 5:16 PM

TURIN, Italy (AFP) - US figure skating alternate Emily Hughes was on standby as five-time world champion Michelle Kwan admitted that she may be forced to pull out of the Winter Olympics as she struggles to come back from injury.

Nine-time national champion Kwan was handed one of the three berths on the US team despite missing the national championships because of a groin injury at the expense of 16-year-old Hughes, sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes, who finished third.

But the 25-year-old, who has also had hip problems, struggled at her first training session Saturday ahead of the competition which is due to start on Tuesday February 21.

"Dropping out is not something I want to do but I have to listen to my body. Physically if I was not able to skate I would give my spot up," Kwan said.

Hughes is currently training in Long Island, New York.

And a spokeswman for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) said that they had until February 18 to make their request to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to make the change.

"If Michelle Kwan withdraws the USOC would submit a petition to the IOC and it would be the IOC's decision whether or not to replace her," USOC press officier Laura Fawcett said.

"We have to have our request in 24 hours before the meeting of the technical committee which is scheduled after the ladies draw on February 19."

Hughes was third at last year's world junior championships, but reached the US podium this year after finishing sixth in 2005.

Kwan, is seeking one last chance at obtaining the one major title that has eluded her throughout her brilliant career - an Olympic gold - after earning silver in 1998 and a bronze in 2002.

But she blamed her stiffness on attending the opening ceremony and the yet lag after arriving.

"I was a little stiff. Sitting outside for four hours was not good for my body. I didn't feel good. I came home and put heat packs on my body," she explained.

"The first day of practice is always nerve wracking. My coach isn't here today either so it's everything rolled into one. I'm probably going to do some therapy to loosen up, do some stretching.

"I'm alarmed with everything that my body does.

"I know it's been a struggle for me this year. I've gone through a lot of injuries. I'm just happy to be here."

Kwan said that if called on Hughes would be prepared for the job.

"As an alternate you have to be 100 percent prepared. I remember being an alternate in Lillehammer and I was doing my programmes all the time," she added.

Injured Kwan pulls out
Sun 12 Feb, 9:51 AM

view photo
TURIN (Reuters) - American Michelle Kwan pulled out of the Winter Olympics on Sunday after suffering a groin injury during practice.

Kwan, a five-times world champion, sustained a groin strain on Saturday at the Palaghiaccio practice ice rink in Turin, the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) said.

"Taking myself off the team is the most difficult decision I've ever had to make but it's the right decision," Kwan said in a statement.

"This injury prevents me from skating my best and I've said all along that if I couldn't skate to the level that I expected from myself I'd withdraw from the team."

Her withdrawal will now allow Emily Hughes, sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes, to participate in the women's competition which begins on February 21.

Hughes finished third at last month's U.S. nationals but was controversially left out of the Olympic team when Kwan successfully received a medical waiver to participate at the Games despite missing the nationals with a previous groin injury.

"The USOC submitted a Late Athlete Replacement Form to the Torino Olympic Organising Committee (TOROC), submitting Emily Hughes as a replacement athlete in the ladies figure skating competition," the federation said in a statement.

SEVERE GROIN STRAIN

"The USOC expects to receive an answer from TOROC this week. Hughes will be travelling to Turin shortly."

Kwan was evaluated by a U.S. team doctor Jim Moeller at 1:15 a.m. British time on Sunday in the athletes' village and she was diagnosed with a severe groin strain, which she sustained while landing a triple flip jump.

"This injury limits her function, making it impossible for her to jump, land and skate effectively and without risk of serious injury," Moeller said in a statement.

He added that the injury was unrelated to the 25-year-old's previous problems and that she was expected to make a full recovery.

"The Olympics is the greatest sporting event in the world and what's most important is that the United States fields the strongest team possible," said Kwan, who was seen to struggle during a training session on Saturday before announcing her withdrawal.

"As much as I'd love to represent the United States in Torino, I would never stand in the way of that."

Kwan won a silver at the 1998 Olympics and earned a bronze four years later at Salt Lake City.

Well this time round i dont want some unknown who got a lucky break to win!!!!

Hey everyone. I have not been following this stuff for years (4 to be exact!) and thus need a little update. Does Irina Slytskaya (spelling?) stand a chance at the Gold?
Thanks,

I like both Joubert and Lambiel, but I think it's time for Brian to show the world what he's really capable of. I hope he doesn't let Plushenko get to him again. :awww:

Lol...I don't really know what some people have against Evgeni Plushenko. I mean it is understandable to prefer another one, but to deny Evgeni's talent and performances can only mean one thing: envy or fear for your own favourite... I am a huge fan of Evgeni's, that's cuz he's simply revolutionary for figure skating as a sport. If one's a figure skating fan, then he must at least appreciate and respect Evgeni for everything he;s done for this sport so far.

My fingers will be crossed for you these days, Evgeni! You are the best of the best, I hope you'll have the stregth to prove it again, and delight us with a marvellous show, as you always do! Love you a lot!

I'm going to Torino for the exhibition on the 26h, oh Gosh, I hope i will succeed to find a ticket and meet Evgeni, take an autograph, a picture, and tell him how much joy his programs (and especially the exhibitions) have always brought me!

Love ya Zenya!
God be with you!

Plushenko keeping low profile
Mon 13 Feb, 10:19 AM

TURIN (Reuters) - Yevgeny Plushenko prepared to launch his assault for the men's figure skating title at the Winter Olympics on Tuesday by keeping a low profile.

The Russian favourite, silver medallist at Salt Lake City four years ago, desperately wants to capture the only gold missing from his collection and most of his rivals have already conceded the title even before the competition has begun.

"I don't think anyone is vying for gold because it's Plushenko's to lose," three-times U.S. men's champion Johnny Weir told reporters.

"I saw a tape of the Europeans and he was incredible."

Plushenko's closest challenger should have been world champion Stephane Lambiel but the Swiss spin master was simply glad to have made it to Turin after injuring his knee during a training session last week.

"I think I can do my best with my knee and I hope that I can do that," Lambiel told reporters on Sunday.

"I am going to do my best with or without the injury."

After recovering from the groin injury that wrecked his chances of claiming a fourth men's world crown last March, Plushenko has been in stupendous form this season despite being laid low by 'flu in January.

The 23-year-old dragged himself out of his sickbed to produce the performance of the week with an explosive free skate to capture his fifth European crown in seven years, easily eclipsing Lambiel.

Having chosen to curtail his schedule to preserve his best form for Turin, he easily won the three events he entered in the run up to the Olympics.

On Sunday he cut short his practice session at the Palavela rink after only 15 minutes but his coach Alexei Mishin said he trained as planned.

"That's just a coaching technique," Mishin told Reuters after his charge was drawn to perform second in the short programme. Plushenko declined to speak to reporters.

Asked how Plushenko was feeling, Mishin said: "Fine, it's just coaching techniques".

Among the others who could challenge Plushenko are 2004 European champion Brian Joubert of France, world silver medallist Jeffrey Buttle of Canada, American Evan Lysacek, talented Canadian Emanuel Sandhu and Daisuke Takahashi of Japan.

Alexi Yaugin was the Federer of skating until he got hurt. I loved him because he put some masculinity into his skating. He had the perfect balance. I wish he was still around.

Congrats to Tatiana and Maxim on winning the 2006 Olympic Pairs gold medal. :D :worship: It was well deserved. :) And it's also amazingly enough the 12th consecutive Olympic Pairs gold medal for Russia making this the greatest dynasty in sports! :D

China's next.
No, Sale and Peltier were the real winners in 02 :p (sarcasm here but they were hired by USA Networks I believe to host a 1 hour daily figure skating show for the Olympics. We'd take them as Americans even if they are really Canucks ;) )...

Damn..I'm gonna be nervous today!
Pluchy, you have to make this big!
I don't know if there's any such thing as the "Federer of figure skating", but if there were, I can only think of one figure skater to be named as that, and that's Evgeni Plushenko. He's brought so much to this sport, and as far as originality and talent go, I can think of no one to have impressed me more, ever since I've been watching this sport!

Make these Olympics yours, Evgeni!

The Federer comparison is not that bad imo, and yes Pluchy would truly deserve the gold medal (even if my heart will be rooting for my fellow boy Stephane)...

Wow, i'm watching the ice skating on TV and it's so beautiful. That phantom of the opera medley sent such a chill down my spine (and i play it so many times on the organ every day)
