I really feel like Brian was better in the long than Stephane, but it was close.

Stephane, Brian, and Evan were by far the best and deserved the medals, even if I think maybe 1st and 2nd should be switched. I guess Stephane deserved the gold, but I still prefer Brian.

Gold: Stephane
Silver: Brian :D
Bronze: Evan :woohoo:

Have I mentioned Evan? ;) Really gutsy from him. If he could only do that well in the short, he would win a lot more medals. ;) I'm so proud of him though. Another World medal. :bounce:

Lambiel wins men's title ahead of Joubert and Lysacek

By BARRY WILNER, AP Sports Writer

CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Stephane Lambiel of Switzerland needed every element and every second of his free skate to hold off France's Brian Joubert and win his second straight World Figure Skating Championships title.

Lambiel capped a magnificent program Thursday night with a quadruple toe loop and four triples in the second half of his routine to Vivaldi's "Four Seasons." He finished it off with a sizzling spin that could have melted the ice, and the Saddledome fans were on their feet long before he stopped turning.

The final skater of the evening, Lambiel lingered on the ice raising his arms, pumping his fists, and throwing kisses to fans ringing cowbells and waving Swiss flags. After receiving his medal, he wrapped one of the flags around his shoulders and head and hugged those same fans.

"I am going to enjoy this world championship,' said Lambiel, who overcame a painful knee that he says will need a lengthy rest. "I didn't make the decision to come here until 10 days ago, so this means a lot to me. I am very proud that I came here and that I competed."

He barely edged Joubert in the free skate, but had a 3.39 point edge overall.

American Evan Lysacek, who won bronze a year ago, came back from a hard fall in warmups to excite the crowd with a performance to rival his strong free skate in the Olympics. That long program lifted Lysacek to fourth in Turin; this one got him another bronze.

"I always learn more about myself through adversity than when it is easy," he said. "I relaxed and kind of went out there and went for it.

"It's days like these when I can relax a little bit and take a baby step back from it all and say it was worth it to just let go and enjoy it."

Joubert looked like he might become the first men's winner from France in 41 years. He was bitterly disappointed with his sixth-place finish at Turin, scrapped his long program and brought back "The Matrix," with which he said he was "more comfortable." It didn't work that well in qualifying, when he was third in his group, but after Joubert won the short program with a James Bond routine, he blew away everyone but Lambiel in the free skate.

Three-time U.S. champion Johnny Weir barely made it off the ice holding his back and grimacing after crashing on a triple flip. He wound up seventh; he was fifth at the Olympics.

"For today, it was just hell getting on the ice," Weir admitted.

Matt Savoie, seventh at the Olympics, was 11th here.

As much as I love Stephane, I definately agree with you. I don't want him to dominate the whole think, I really hate when that happens.

I must say there are a lot of hotties out in the skating world. I was very happy with the results tonight they were well deserved although I was pissed that Jeff Buttle couldn't come through tonight but hey he won a bronze at the olympics so...meh but overall still very pleased with everything. Stephane and Brian were both fantastic and it''s good to see a rivalry brewing up again instead of the one man show...

And :haha: @ the rivarly thing in figure skating, Lambiel is the Federer of figure skating as we all know ;) :p but is Brian Nadal then? :o

I still have to see the free programme, but somehow I can't get rid of the impression that the whole thing was already decided in the qualifying. Maybe Brian has learned by now that judges have a long memory ;) As for a comparison with Nadal: you seem to need glasses? :p

I am a lot hotter honey  :)

:haha: Margareta & Scott, so Brian is no Nadal? :o ;) :tears: But who is then? :o

I get the British commentating on Eurosport International and you know what they said - that Johnny Weir is the John McEnroe of figure skating. :haha:
I am really sorry about his back spasms, I hope he'll get well soon. You could clearly see he didn't want to be there.

But it was close and had it not been for the qualifying ;). I am nevertheless very pleased. Brian established himself as a serious contender again and is no more a non-delivering big-mouth.

And more one thing: the whole competition was much more exciting and worth watching than the Olympics.

Me too. This time it looked pathetic as if Sasha couldn't manage one clean jump. I think it CAN'T just be all mental otherwise she'd be messing up on other elements too. If she only messes up on the jumps then I wonder if she's simply too skinny for jumping? She really does keep her weight down to skeletal proportions. She's thinner than Kimmie.

Kimmie did a great job, but I don't feel she has a WoW factor to her skating. I don't know if she has much of a personality. I bet she was so happy to get the gold when she must have had to suffer under hearing so much praise lavished on Sasha dispite the fact that Sasha virtually never skates without falling.

Congrats to Kimmie Meisner on winning the world championships at age 16. :) She skated the best and deserved to win. But I'm sad for Sasha coming up small again with the gold medal on the line. :( And being beaten by a 16 year old kid in a weak field has to be devastating to her.  Sasha seemed physically tired at the Olympics so I have to question the logic of her going to worlds and having to skate 3 routines. I think it's asking too much of petite Sasha. Especially at the end of a long and tough season. I hope Cohen takes some time off to clear her head and decide what she wants to do. I don't think she can mentally or physically handle the stress of figures skating anymore. And I would only want her to return to full time competitive figure skating if she worked with a sports psychologist. It worked for Alexi Yagudin and it can work for Sasha Cohen. But Sasha might be so beaten up by figure skating that she may want to retire from competitive figure skating. :( I just hope she does whatever is best for her.

First of all concrats Kimmi for a great performance at such a young age!!

All right I might jump in a beehave here - but can someone please explain to me why the last group got sooooooooo much higher notes in the components than the second last group?? Sorry I know no nothing about this juging system but for me it's still not working. I really feel that Sasha doesn't deserve that medal!! She already got far to high notes in the components in the short in my opinion - and now in the lp again!! Or was her programm really 9 points better than the one from Sahra Meier or one of the finish girls from the second last group - I don't think so! And as she was the first one on the ice from the last group and made a hell a lot of mistakes they tried to lift her up in the components so she would still get a medal - and then they couldn't go back anymore. I really feel sorry for Sukulova and all the girls from the second last group..

Well one of the things I have wondered about is if Sasha is just staying too thin. Isn't Kimmie about the same height and bone frame except that she's slightly more muscular than Sasha? I think there must be a lot of pressure for the skaters to stay extremely thin in order to have the right look.....but then if they don't have any leg muscle because of it they can't jump. I quesiton the same thing about Johnny Weir.

I don't think Sasha can continually just keep using the excuse of having a cold or the flu at every competition. It seems like all the skaters continually are sick all the time. Look at her legs though.....not much muscle there.

I don't know but over the years I've heard that judges award partly on what they've seen a skater do over the whole year not just in the one tournament. Favoritism can play a part too. Despite the new scoring system I think this can still be in place.

For Sasha, her performance and getting the bronze in such a weak field is quite a let down. I can't see how getting the bronze makes her feel any better than if she placed 4th or lower right now.

That was a shame he couldn't nail his two quads at the Games. I wonder how close the gap would have been with Yevgeny. I wish Alexi could come back.

Not close at all. Yevgeny would have had to come out in a tutu and slide around the ice on his ass for the entire time to lose.

Even then we'd be nauseated by the notion that he was "taking a risk" and thus deserved bonus marks  :p

and plusy would ruine everything if he were present at the world champs..... no fight....

I dunno, the Russians paid dearly for Plushy's Olympic gold... but I don't think he'd get many golds for free after that. ;)

To all JB-fans:

I was travelling the last two days and by pure chance I saw a French TV-programme in which Brian appeared on Tuesday evening. (Jeans and simple shirt). He introduced his new book. In contrast to his reputation, he seemed rather humble to me ;). It was rather diffcult to get his comments as the other people in the programme spoke much more than him and all at he same time too;))
